Leon Majcen Is An Up & Comer You Need To Know, & His New Record ‘Better Days’ Is Proof
If you haven’t listened to Leon Majcen’s new album yet, you should change that.
Titled Better Days, Majcen’s latest record features some of his best work yet as he continues to hone his gulf coast folk sound and gain traction within the country music scene. Comprised of 8 tracks, including 7 originals that were written solo or co-penned by Majcen himself, the album showcases his songwriting prowess and also includes a spectacular cover a classic by one of his songwriting heroes Townes Van Zandt.
Heavily influenced by legendary artists who are often described as “the songwriter’s songwriter,” like Van Zandt, Guy Clark, and John Prine, to name a few, Majcen’s music is full of clever lyricism and detailed imagery that’ll transport you to a specific time and place, or at the very lease strike a chord and evoke an emotion that few artists his age are able to tap into. Though he currently resides in Nashville, Majcen hails from the gulf coast city of Clearwater, FL, and elements of his coastal background are prevalent in his music, both sonically and thematically. With unique vocals as well, his music sticks out in a time when many up and coming artists sound the same, and it seems the scene is finally taking note.
Recorded with producer Jon Notar in Woodstock, NY between a run of shows in the Northeast, and released via Evan Honer’s indie label Cloverdale Records, Better Days by Leon Majcen is an album you don’t want to miss.
Go ahead and give it a listen for yourself here, you’ll be glad you did.
“Blue Sky”
“Grey Hairs on Momma’s Head”
“Better Days”
With seven originals, Better Days is undoubtedly a showcase of Majcen’s songwriting prowess, but “I’ll Be Here In The Morning” is a cover of an iconic love song by one his songwriting heroes and one of the most underrated artists of all time, Townes Van Zandt.
Check out the original version here in case you are not already familiar:
“Well there’s a lot of things along the road I’d surely like to see
I’d like to lean into the wind and tell myself I’m free
But your softest whisper’s louder than the highway’s call to me”
And if he’s coming to a city near you anytime soon, get out there and catch a show.
