EXCLUSIVE FIRST LISTEN: Robby Johnson Debuts Twangin’ New Country Heartbreaker, ‘If Barstools Could Cry’
Really dig this one.
Everybody loves a good country heartbreak song – and we’ve heard plenty of them over the years. But this one’s putting a brand new spin on those tear-in-your-beer songs about love gone wrong, one where the barstool’s the one doing the crying.
Robby Johnson is releasing his next single “If Barstools Could Cry” tomorrow, May 9. And while it’s a good old fashioned country heartbreaker, it puts a unique spin on the classic theme both sonically and lyrically.
The song finds Johnson imagining how things would have been different “If Barstools Could Cry” and warn him about the mistakes he was about to make:
“They’ve heard all the stories that cut through the night
And they’ve witnessed firsthand love turn into fights
They stand there in line saying nothing at all
They sure d*mn near know why I’m crashing this bar
…
If barstools could cry you’d know that I’m sorry
If barstools could cry I wouldn’t be so lonely
If barstools could cry the river of tonight
I’d sail to your front porch and turn on your lights
If barstools could cry you’d still be with me
If barstools could cry we’d have a story
If barstools could cry and feel all that we feel
The tears would have warned me your goodbye was real
And these boots of mine would be dry
If barstools could cry”
But the new lyrical twist isn’t the only thing that makes the song so compelling. It’s not your traditional heartbreak ballad, but instead a twangy, up-tempo barnburner that almost highlights the frantic feelings of despair after a breakup.
It’s a good ol’ fashioned country heater.
If you’re not familiar with Johnson, the relative newcomer has been cutting his chops in Nashville for a while now after leaving his job as a manufacturing plant worker. He released his debut album, Don’t Look Back, back in 2016, and since then he’s appeared everywhere from Fox News Channel to The Late Show with David Letterman.
While Robby Johnson may not be a household name just yet, if he keeps on dropping heat like this while putting his unique lyrical spin on his music, I have a feeling you’ll be hearing a lot more from him very soon. The post EXCLUSIVE FIRST LISTEN: Robby Johnson Debuts Twangin’ New Country Heartbreaker, ‘If Barstools Could Cry’ first appeared on Whiskey Riff.
