Hudson Westbrook Once Accidentally Played A Gig In A Florida Gentleman’s Club: “It Was The Weirdest Thing”
Hudson Westbrook already has some strange touring stories in his young career.
The up-and-coming country music artist Hudson Westbrook stopped by the Whiskey Riff Raff podcast (brought to you by our friends at Rock the Country festival) to talk about growing up in Texas, being inspired by the music of his home state and artists like Parker McCollum, moving to Nashville to chase his country music dreams, releasing his debut self-titled album last year, playing Rock the Country, and much more.
With Hudson Westbrook becoming so popular so quickly, he had no other choice but to grow up fast. Even big life decision – like his choice to drop out of Texas Tech – happened at breakneck speed. Though it was obviously the right thing to do for his country music career, he had forgot to tell his mom that he was no longer enrolled in college.
The story of how she found out Hudson was no longer in college was rather hilarious:
“We’re standing on stage at ACL and that was like my first big place. I walked on stage super excited about it. We’re about to start ‘Two Way Drive’ and I always do this talking thing where I’m like, ‘I was going to school at Texas Tech, breaking bulls out there and then I would drive back and forth from Fort Worth to Lubbock and then I ended up dating a girl and I’d think about her on the way back, and I just dropped out of college, here we go.’ My mom was in the crowd.”

The good news is that Westbrook’s mom quickly saw that the decision to drop out was really to move up into a country music career.
And even as his touring career got started, Hudson Westbrook ended up playing in some weird places. That being said, the Texas native told us during the interview that was one of his favorite shows he ever put on just so happened to be at a venue in Florida that was either a) close to a strip club or b) it was a strip club:
“Jannus Live in Florida was insane, because I guess we went and played this like… strip club/venue in West Palm Beach. It was the weirdest thing. Strippers were walking in and out. I’m playing ‘5 to 9’ and I’m like, ‘This is not lining up.’ (Playing) ‘Pray Your Name,’ I was like thinking, ‘That’s not the Hudson Westbrook vibe.’
There were like 100 people there and they were hanging out. Then at Jannus Live there were 3,000 and there’s a video of the city and people just screaming ‘House Again’ and it’s ringing out through the town. That showed me that we’re going somewhere.”

Just for clarification, since his explanation was a little confusing… Jannus Live is a popular venue in downtown St. Petersburg, Florida, (the owner ran someone over with his boat recently) and the West Palm Beach strip club spot Westbrook is referring to (two different places) is called Banyan Live, which is technically a separate venue that is housed inside ORA Ultra Cabaret… a gentleman’s club.
Interesting setup I’d be willing to bet… can you imagine taking a new date out to a concert and you roll up to the gentleman’s club? Or your wife pings your location on her iPhone:
“You said we’re going to a concert? Why are you at the strip club right now?”
“Honey…. trust me. It’s not what you think…”
That has to have happened to someone… South Florida residents, let me know. Either way, it’s a hilarious moment in Hudson’s young career that he won’t soon forget, and you can hear about all of that and more in the latest episode of the Whiskey Riff Raff podcast.
