Leaked Morgan Wallen/Tate McRae Duet, “What I Want,” Goes Viral Ahead Of ‘I’m The Problem’ Album Release
His first major collaboration with a female artist.
Morgan Wallen is gearing up to release his new album I’m The Problem this Friday, and yesterday, he held an album preview event as his Nashville bar, where fans could pop in to hear some of the new music, as well as the stories behind the songs.
The lengthy 37-song tracklist includes features from fellow country artists Eric Church, Ernest and Hardy, as well as Morgan’s first major collaboration with a female artist with Canadian pop star Tate McRae on a duet called “What I Want.” Tate has previously joined Megan Moroney for a duet onstage, so she clearly has interest in the country genre and you couldn’t ask for a bigger opportunity than to work with Morgan right now.
Even if you don’t listen to pop music much, you’ve probably heard her hit “Greedy” at some point, even unwillingly, and while it feels like kind of a random pairing, Morgan has said they’ve been talking about working together for a while now, and this song finally felt right… even though some of her fans are mad at her for working with him because, you know…. media narratives.
I figured that this duet would stray from the more “country” aspects of some of Morgan’s music and lean more into that pop sound he likes a lot too, especially since Tate is obviously not a country artist, and it sounds like that’s the case. Fans shared clips of the duet after hearing it yesterday, and the reaction I saw about it was overwhelmingly positive, with people already talking about how much they love the sound of it.
Here’s a clip of the audio from someone at the event, which has now gone viral on TikTok:
@d_demps93 I think I’m allowed to show y’all this song is a BOP !!! Go stream on Friday @morganwallen @tate mcrae yall did it with this one #newmusic #nashville ♬ original sound – ꧁ⒹⒺ︎ⓅⓈ꧂
It’s honestly hard to make a call without hearing the full song, plus you don’t hear all that much from Tate in the clip. There’s definitely some pop and hip hop influence but it’s nothing out of the ordinary for Morgan. I think I’ll be way more offended by whatever he’s done with that Keith Whitley song… I’m not sure I can even listen to that one.
I’m The Problem is due out everywhere this Friday, May 16th, and you can view the full tracklist below.
