Loretta Lynn’s Granddaughter Leaves Her An Emotional Voicemail For New Song “Phone Call to Heaven”
Grab the tissues.
The late, great Loretta Lynn is still touching people through the music her family is making. Lynn’s granddaughter, Emmy Russell, follows in her grandmother’s footsteps and is quite the songbird. Russell was on her way to making it in the music industry, and last year decided the final push that she needed to be noticed on a larger scale was to appear on American Idol.
Unlike many other contestants, Russell had already appeared on the Grand Ole Opry stage and was well-connected in the country music scene. While she had this “leg up,” she often felt that she was compared to her grandmother, and she opened up by saying that it was very hard for her to find her identity outside of being Loretta Lynn’s granddaughter.
“I was told at 11 years old that ‘You’ve got big shoes to fill,’ or ‘You’ll never be your grandma.’ The pressure that I lived under is why the nerves are so strong. I’ve had an eating disorder since I was 15.
When I was 16, I remember right before showtime, I had fake eyelashes on, and I looked in the mirror in the dressing room and was just like, ‘Who am I? What is my identity outside of being Loretta Lynn’s granddaughter?’”
Since her time on the show, it appears that Russell has grown into her skin as an artist. However, she has not forgotten the bond with her grandmother that instilled her love for music. Emmy Russell is gearing up to release an emotional song titled “Phone Calls From Heaven,” which captures the feeling of wanting to talk to a loved one who has passed.
For the song’s promotion, Russell had herself, her husband, and fellow musician Tyler Ward leave voicemails to people they miss. Russell left one for her grandmother.
“Hey, Memaw, I really wish that you could meet my daughter. I think you would love her.”
Russell speaks into the phone as tears begin to well in her eyes.
“I’m so happy that you’re in a place that you don’t feel alone, and you’re just no longer sick anymore. I love you so much. I miss you so much.”
Russell’s husband also leaves a message for his father, who has passed. Hearing the short messages shared in this promotional video chokes you because everyone can relate to it. We all have that loved one whom we wish we could say just a few more words to.
Russell also asked her fans to send in videos of them leaving voicemails for loved ones as a part of a special video for her new single.
