Dolly Parton Was Not Impressed With The First Songs Miley Cyrus Showed Her From Forthcoming ‘Something Beautiful’ Album

Tellin’ it like it is. Dolly Parton is of course a dream mentor for any musician, so Miley Cyrus hit the jackpot when it comes to being her goddaughter… and Dolly certainly doesn’t hold back when it comes to giving advice. Miley is gearing up to release her ninth studio Something Beautiful album May 30th, and she decided to show Dolly some of the music before she really started putting it together to get her opinion. She played her the title track when she was visiting at Christmas, and Dolly wasn’t a fan… she asked Miley if she had “any hits,” implying that whatever she heard wasn’t up to snuff. Miley said that, at the time, she didn’t have anything that fit that criteria, so she flew back to LA and wrote “More to Lose,” which she calls her “song for Aunt Dolly”: “I went to see Dolly during Christmas, and I played her ‘Something Beautiful,’ and I was excited, because she just came off her rock album, so I thought she was really gonna get it. So I played ‘Something Beautiful,’ she goes, ‘Alright, I see what you’re doing here. You got any hits?’ I was pretty sure I didn’t at that time, so I was like, ‘Yeah, I do. It’s called ‘More to Lose,’ but I hadn’t written it yet. So I flew back to LA, and that was at Christmastime, January 2nd, I got in the studio and went and wrote this song. But I’ve always thought of this song as my ‘I Will Always Love You.’ So this is my song for Aunt Dolly.” “More to Lose” was written by Miley along with Autumn Rowe and Michael Pollack, and it’s a beautiful ballad about heartbreak and love lost that changes your entire life: View this post on Instagram A post shared by Miley Cyrus (@mileycyrus) Miley also recently revealed some of the best advice Dolly ever gave her: “When Dolly told me, ‘You do you, and I’ll do me. And together we’ll be us.’ And now I just say that to everybody, because now I’m like, ‘You do you and I’ll do me. And we’ll do us, and that will be so cute. But like I can’t be giving you and you can’t be giving me.’” Probably the most Dolly advice of all-time… I just can’t imagine what it’s like to have her as your godmother. Miley has talked about their relationship before, and it sounds like they’re still close and she’s certainly the women to go to for advice on anything in the music industry, but life in general, because she’s so real and honest, and has been through so much in her decades-long career both personally and professionally. Miley has released three other songs from the thirteen song album in total so far, including “Prelude,” “Something Beautiful” and “End of the World.” “More to Lose” The post Dolly Parton Was Not Impressed With The First Songs Miley Cyrus Showed Her From Forthcoming ‘Something Beautiful’ Album first appeared on Whiskey Riff.
