Blake Shelton Roasts The Title Of His Own New Album, ‘For Recreational Use Only’ – “It’s Ridiculous”

Making fun of his own record name. Blake Shelton just released a new record, For Recreational Use Only, and part of the project includes appearing on talk shows, podcasts, hitting the road, and more. After leaving the hit singing competition show The Voice, Shelton has been living in pseudo-retirement, enjoying a slower-paced life and just enjoying the little things in general. Shelton admitted that after leaving The Voice, he thought he was nearing the end of his run with music, but after making “Pour Me A Drink” with Post Malone, the collaboration lit a fire in him to create a new record. “It lit a fire under me.” After the release of For Recreational Use Only, Shelton shared with People Magazine that he’s now at a point in his career that he’s not afraid to experiment with new topics and ideas in the studio. “I don’t feel like I have anything to prove anymore. I used to be almost afraid of my success because I was afraid of losing it somehow… but now it’s just fun for me.” Aside from his hit at country radio, “Texas,” I hate to admit that experimentation didn’t lead to a smash album. Shelton’s older music is where he shines. While his new music might not be my cup of tea, I do like that Shelton has a personality. He can take a joke, doesn’t take himself too seriously, and knows how to have a good time. While Shelton is proud of his work on his latest album, on his recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, he and Fallon left the audience in a fit of laughter, talking about how the album naming and album art process of creating a record is sometimes mundane and often silly. Fallon asked Shelton if he liked the album naming process specifically. Shelton said it’s not his favorite part and delivered a little jab about the title he selected for the record. “I don’t know if I love the album titling (part). I love making the album, but titling it has never been a thing. I mean, look at what the name of my title is. ‘For Recreational Use Only.’ That’s like a — you know, it’s ridiculous. It doesn’t even mean [anything]. It’s just trying to come up with something that people will remember. You know what I mean?” Fallon then jokes that the “recreational use” of the album was about frisbee, given the clear vinyl he had on his desk. Shelton then said that it, of course, could be related to substances of sorts. The jabs continued after the album title, and Fallon began to mock Shelton’s “blue steel” look on the record’s cover image. “I think the album cover’s cool. It’s mysterious. You’re a stranger in a bar.” Shelton then tells Fallon to get to the joke, knowing more will come. “You’re like thinking. You’re in front of the jukebox. There’s like a map behind you, and like a whip. You’re like Indiana Jones. And you’re deciding, ‘What song should I play next? What song should I  play next? There’s a whole jukebox full of music back there, but I’m going to pick one…'” As Fallon keeps going, Shelton asks the band to start playing music, hoping he will stop talking and making fun of him. But Fallon is not done there. He flips the record over, poking fun at his pose on that side as well. “And then this guy is starting a bar fight. That’s frightening, that’s scary.” Even though this is all in good fun, I love that Fallon was making fun of Blake Shelton. He can be a little cringeworthy at times, and his poses on the record begged for someone to poke fun at him. But as I said earlier, Shelton can take a joke and fired back at Fallon, getting the interview back on track. “Would you ask me some real questions?” HA. Hey, at least Shelton can acknowledge that the title For Recreational Use Only doesn’t make much sense.
