Former Army National Guard Soldier Arrested For Alleged ISIS-Inspired Plot On U.S. Military Base, Justice Department Says
Federal agents arrested a former Michigan Army National Guard soldier for an alleged plot to carry out an ISIS-inspired mass shooting at a U.S. military base near Detroit.
“Ammar Abdulmajid-Mohamed Said, 19, is charged in a criminal complaint with attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization and distributing information related to a destructive device,” the Justice Department stated in a press release.

“This defendant is charged with planning a deadly attack on a U.S. military base here at home for ISIS,” said Sue J. Bai, head of the Justice Department’s National Security Division.
“Thanks to the tireless efforts of law enforcement, we foiled the attack before lives were lost. We will not hesitate to bring the full force of the Department to find and prosecute those who seek to harm our men and women in the military and to protect all Americans,” Bai added.
Per Reuters:
If convicted, Said could face up to 20 years in prison on each count, federal prosecutors said.
According to the complaint, Said spent months planning the attack with two undercover officers posing as IS operatives. The target of the alleged plot was the Army’s Tank-Automotive & Armaments Command facility at the Detroit Arsenal in Warren, Michigan, about 20 miles north of Detroit.
In addition to flying his drone over the base to conduct “operational reconnaissance and surveillance,” Said supplied armor-piercing ammunition and magazines that he believed would be used in the attack, the complaint said.
“ISIS is a brutal terrorist organization which seeks to kill Americans. Helping ISIS or any other terrorist organization prepare or carry out acts of violence is not only a reprehensible crime – it is a threat to our entire nation and way of life,” said U.S. Attorney Jerome F. Gorgon Jr. for the Eastern District of Michigan.
“Our office will not tolerate such crimes or threats, and we will use the full weight of the law against anyone who engages in terrorism,” Gorgon added.

CNN reports:
Said spent two years in the Michigan Army National Guard until he was discharged in December, according to court documents.
Said “was involuntarily discharged for failing to complete initial entry requirements,” a Michigan National Guard spokesperson told CNN in an email.
“The Michigan National Guard is an organization built on a foundation of trust, integrity and accountability,” the statement said. “We hold all members to the highest professional standards, and when those standards are not met, we act in accordance with the law and our internal policies.”
An affidavit filed in the case describes Said’s monthslong correspondence with undercover FBI employees whom he thought were fellow ISIS supporters, and his alleged meticulous planning for the attack. Said flew a drone over the Army base last November to scout entry and exit points and vehicles entering the base, the court document says.
