Jamie Lee Curtis Recalls Getting ‘Love Boat’ Role After 1978 Big Break On ‘Halloween’
Jamie Lee Curtis is opening up about the unexpected path her acting career took following her breakout role in Halloween. In a recent interview, the actress reflected on her early days in Hollywood and the moments she shared with her mother, Janet Leigh. Although many assumed that Curtis would immediately become famous after Halloween, she revealed it did not happen that way.
She made a special guest appearance on The Love Boat and starred opposite her real-life mother. In the episode “Chubs/Locked Away/Till Death Do Us Part—Maybe,” Curtis played a young bride navigating marital troubles while Leigh was her on-screen mother. It was a beautiful experience for Curtis, who was still finding her footing in the industry.

Curtis also recalled another early job on Charlie’s Angels, where she played a professional golfer and best friend to Cheryl Ladd’s character. These appearances allowed Curtis to build a track record. Despite being born to Hollywood stars Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh, Jamie Lee Curtis insists that her effort earned her a place in the industry.
She admitted her family name may have paved the way, but her auditions and persistence landed her roles. When she tried out for Halloween, which seemed to be a low-budget horror film at the time, she was just 19 years old and unaware of how much the opportunity would change her life. The movie eventually grossed $47 million.

Building an acting career
In the interview, the 66-year-old candidly reflected on how unprepared she initially felt. She shared that acting had not been her first dream, as she once considered a career in law enforcement, and she never viewed herself as famous. She described her younger self as “cute but not pretty,” noting that even her teeth were gray as a child.

Despite these insecurities, a friend encouraged her to audition at Universal Studios. At the same time, she was home from college, leading to a seven-year contract and the decision to leave school. Her journey took another unexpected turn when she began accepting commercial work in the ’90s and 2000s, allowing her to be home with her children.
