Marcus King Performs Unreleased Song Written With Lainey Wilson & Meg McRee At Nashville Pop-Up Show
Marcus King is teasing some new tunes.
Last night, Marcus King held a pop-up show at Robert’s Western World in Nashville, Tennessee. Given that they advertised the pop-up, it was not a stop-in, total surprise kind of show, but regardless, the legendary honky tonk was jumping last night with King and his band taking the stage.

King played a short set with only a handful of songs, but one of those songs was a new one. Even though King just released a new single, “Honky Tonk Hell,” the fact that he’s previewing another leads one to believe that he might have a larger project in the works.
The single he debuted last night was written alongside Lainey Wilson and Meg McRee.
“This song is gonna be our last song. This is a song I wrote with my good friend Meg McRee, a fantastic writer, and my good friend Lainey (Wilson). Any Lainey Wilson fans out there tonight? Well there better damn be! This song’s called ‘Here Today’ and it goes like this…”
King then counts down with the band to fire up the tune. “Here Today” instantly has an addictive groove as his lead guitar player lets a killer riff rip. When King begins to sing, the melody pulls back slightly, allowing the acoustic guitar to shine. But that dialed-back sound is only there momentarily before a steel riff comes in, amping the melody back up.
As for the lyrics, King sings of a man who feels like he’s living on borrowed time and is trying to get by while living on the run.
“I’m a ramblin’ desperado
Never lookin’ back’s my middle name
All the time I had
I had to borrow
Here today, gone tomorrow
Here today
Gone tomorrow…”

This was not the first time King had sung this song in front of a crowd. King debuted “Here Today” while touring in Sydney, Australia.

Similar to “Hony Honk Hell,” the sound of “Here Today” goes back to the roots of King’s sound. On his latest project, King dove deep into his songwriting, addressing the struggles of his past and how he’s moved on from them. With the heavy subject matter found in that tracklist, the sound curated with Rick Rubin for Mood Swings highlighted a different side of King as an artist. While some might have missed the rip-roaring sound of King shredding on that record compared to his previous ones, I thought the different sound showcased in Mood Swings was almost necessary at this point in his career and added depth to who King is as an artist. He’s multifaceted, and Mood Swings proved that to fans.
This next chapter of King’s music sounds like it will be filled with heaters. What King has released and teased this year excites me for what’s in store. Keep ’em coming.
Before you go, fire up his latest release, “Honky Tonk Hell.”
