Jamey Johnson, John Daly & Taylor Hicks Singing “In Color” Is The Trio You Didn’t Know You Needed
John Daly, Taylor Hicks, and Jamey Johnson together on one stage is the trio you had no idea you needed to hear.
Imagine going to a local barbecue spot in Alabama and witnessing a legendary concert featuring a golfing legend, a country music star, and a former American Idol winner. That’s exactly what people in Birmingham, Alabama got to witness last week at SAW’s Juke Joint.
Many celebrities were in Birmingham last week for a Pro-Am golf tournament that took place ahead of the Regions Tradition – a major tournament on the PGA Champions Tour. The tournament itself is the event everyone is there for… but one side project of the tournament, if you will, that gets bigger and bigger every year is the SAW’s Juke Joint Jamboree.
Taylor Hicks is actually one of the owners of the barbecue restaurant known as SAW’s (they now have multiple locations around the Birmingham-area). The American Idol winner and Birmingham native lives in Nashville, but tends to stop in to SAW’s Juke Joint when he can. Especially when the Juke Joint Jamboree is happening.
Hicks explained in an interview with AL.com that much of the night is planned out (Hicks and Daly were scheduled to perform), but surprise guests (like Jamey Johnson) can always drop in and enhance the experience.
And as Hicks said, it’s a night that’s full of barbecue and rocking music:
“It happens organically that night. Everybody has their adult beverages and gets full of barbecue. When the mood gets right and everything’s grooving, artists will pop up. The band’s already in place, and it’s just an easy thing to pop up there and entertain folks.
People love it. The band starts at 6 and goes until the last beer. It can go pretty late. Everybody’s in a good mood and everybody’s happy. You never know what you’re gonna get the Tuesday night before the Regions Tradition at the Juke Joint.”
That’s the perfect way of describing it, considering that country music fans that were there in attendance were probably stunned to see Jamey Johnson sharing the stage with John Daly and Taylor Hicks. You probably wouldn’t ever imagine those three working together, but astonishingly, they all played off one another perfectly.
They first wrapped up Jamey Johnson’s “In Color” before they seamlessly transitioned into “Can’t You See” by The Marshall Tucker Band.

Looks like a whole lot of fun… I’ve got to book a trip to Birmingham, Alabama for next year’s SAW’s Juke Joint Jamboree.
Other than “In Color” and the excerpt from “Can’t You See,” the unlikely trio also played “Call Me the Breeze,” “Hit It Hard” (a John Daly orginal) and “Lead Me Home.” And since John Daly is almost always good for a performance of “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door,” he made sure to fit that one into the setlist.
The golfing legend never fails to nail his go-to song:

As of right now, there’s no price of admission to get into SAW’s Juke Joint Jamboree, which feels like a steal for those that get to attend the event. However, Taylor Hicks says that as the musical event continues to grow in size and scope, he’s considered a) moving it outside and b) turning it into a charity fund-raiser event.
That being said, Hicks is more than happy with how the Jamboree is run now, and loves that SAW’s gets to be the home of it:
“I love being back home. I love seeing family and friends, and I love supporting the Regions Tradition. I love the atmosphere. And obviously I’m fond of Saw’s Juke Joint.
It’s just a neat little place in that side of the world. It’s just me, wanting to give back through the golf – but also just wanting to play music in the Juke Joint and have a good time.”
