Woke “Journalist” Suggests Morgan Wallen Fans Are “MAGA” For Listening To His “Trump-Coded” Music

Does the “M” in Morgan Wallen stand for “MAGA?” If you were to ask Variety, they’d likely say yes. That’s at least what one of their recent stories about the global country music superstar argued, and fans of Wallen’s – and country music fans in general – haven’t let that slide. Morgan’s 37-track album I’m The Problem released last Friday, and it’s already the most streamed country music album of 2025. Considering the song count on the project, that could be a bit of a numbers game, but either way, I don’t think anybody is going to try and argue against Morgan Wallen’s popularity. The “Last Night” singer is arguably the biggest star on the planet right now (right up there with the likes of Taylor Swift, Drake etc…), and in the past few years, he’s managed to keep his last two albums near the top of the all-genre charts. I’m The Problem is sure to follow… most likely debuting at #1 later this week on the Billboard 200. Fans were certainly excited when they woke up last Friday to a massive collection of new songs. But Wallen fans weren’t so thrilled when they saw a headline about Morgan’s new music from Variety writer Jem Aswad that read: “Does Being a Morgan Wallen Fan Make You MAGA? Why the Country Bad Boy’s Music Is Trump-Coded.” Does Being a Morgan Wallen Fan Make You MAGA? Why the Country Bad Boy's Music Is Trump-Coded https://t.co/80LojTlhs5 — Variety (@Variety) May 16, 2025 Woah. This line in particular from the story seemed the most far-fetched to me: “Wallen has never publicly endorsed Trump, but he doesn’t need to: His behavior and image are indisputably MAGA-coded. His songs might be about drinking and bad decisions and being a bad*** – and defiance about the results of that drinking and those bad decisions and that bad***ery – but it’s hard to separate them from the very Trumpy, middle-finger-to-the-world spirit that his non-musical actions seem to reflect.” That seems a little ridiculous, does it not? So now being “punk” and “anti-establishment” means that you support Donald Trump? Green Day would like a word… Of course, one look at Aswad’s X feed and it’s nothing but Trump hate… After going on and on about Morgan’s “reprehensible” personal behavior, including the the time he “broke Covid protocols,” the article “explores” the messy, grey area of separating the art from the artist… and the moral conundrum that it allegedly presents. He then cites artists like Chris Brown, Jerry Lee Lewis, R Kelly, Diddy, R Kelly, Michael Jackson, Nirvana, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Eric Clapton, Maroon 5 and dozens of others who either have questionable personal lives or questionable material. He concludes this laundry list of musical artists by saying: “We live in an era where it feels like we should do a background check before expressing enthusiasm or positivity about virtually anyone or anything.” I assure you, nobody feels that way… except the virtue-signaling media who has spent the past 10 years pushing cancel culture, telling you what’s “problematic,” and shaming the American people for thinking for themselves. But here’s the thing… not only has Wallen never publicly endorsed President Donald Trump, nothing about his music, his social media, his charitable endeavors, his label… it’s not political at all. Is there a good chance that a lot of Trump supporters listen to Morgan Wallen’s music? Sure. But there are plenty of people who didn’t vote for Donald Trump that listen to his music too. Feels a little heavy handed to just label Morgan Wallen as a Trump supporter, and suggest that his catalogue seeks to serve the president… and pass the same condemnation on his fans for listening to him. Music, like any other form of art, is up for interpretation. There are a lot of musical messages in the modern day, but I don’t think I would have ever lumped Morgan Wallen’s body of work as “pro-Trump.” And while the headline is framed as a question, the big conclusion of the article is essentially “eh, it’s probably best to just put your headphones on and keep it to yourself.” The article (especially the headline), which speaks in a lot of generalizations, sparked quite the backlash… and deservedly so. Weirdest headline and article written by your outlet, congrats — Dylan Farella (@dfarella) May 16, 2025 I think his songs are catchy and I don’t call myself a conservative lol so this headline is stupid. — down into an opinionated rabbit hole (@madteatakes) May 16, 2025 Quit stirring the pot — Mark McClure (@markthetexan1) May 16, 2025 Can we enjoy the Tennessee superstar’s music without seeing red hats????
