When you make a movie about angels interfering in the lives of ordinary humans, you invite comparisons. There are several possible comparison movies, obviously, but for me, watching the trailer for Aziz Ansari’s Good Fortune, I thought: Are these the dingy versions of the angels from A Life Less Ordinary?
I have other questions, too, like what the heck a Fatboy Slim movie is doing in a trailer in the year twenty-twenty-five. Why is everyone so stiff? Why is the only joke that lands Seth Rogen’s line about how confusing it will be for an angel to deal with human sexuality? Do angels even have genders? Why?
Sorry. Got distracted. Good Fortune is written and directed by Ansari, who also stars; Keke Palmer and Sandra Oh are also in this film. Reeves is an angel named Gabriel (presumably not the archangel Gabriel) who asks his angel boss (Oh) for more meaningful work. She tells him he has to find a lost soul, which, crikey, how hard can that be? Have the angels actually looked at this world lately?
The only synopsis Lionsgate has offered for this strange, stilted-seeming film is, “In Good Fortune, a well-meaning but rather inept angel named Gabriel (Keanu Reeves) meddles in the lives of a struggling gig worker (Aziz Ansari) and a wealthy venture capitalist (Seth Rogen).”
These angels fly into theaters on October 17th. Maybe a longer trailer will arrive and make more sense before then.[end-mark]
