The news of George Wendt’s sudden passing on May 20 shocked Cheers fans. It was hard to believe the ever-jolly Norm Peterson was suddenly sitting at a barstool in heaven where Coach handed him his first beer. It’s been a little more than two weeks, and The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health released George’s official cause of death on June 5. According to documents obtained by TMZ, George Wendt died from a combination of ailments. Per the death certificate, he died from cardiac arrest. George also suffered from congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease, hypertension, end-stage renal disease, kidney disease, and hyperlipidemia related to high cholesterol. Sadly, the conditions proved deadly, and George’s life ended in a blink. His alma mater, Rockhurst University shared kind words for one of their most famous alums. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Rockhurst alum George Wendt, beloved comedian and actor. Best known for his role as ‘Norm’ from the sitcom ‘Cheers,’ many in our community knew him as a fellow Hawk. Wendt graduated in 1971 with a degree in economics before joining Second City comedy troupe in Chicago and landing his iconic role.Thank you for all the laughs, George. Rest in peace.” Ted Danson, who played Sam Malone alongside George on Cheers, shared a heartbreaking statement with Entertainment Weekly. “I am devastated to hear that Georgie is no longer with us. I am sending all my love to Bernadette and the children. It is going to take me a long time to get used to this. I love you, Georgie.” John Ratzenberger, who played Norm’s drinking buddy Cliff Clavin, echoed Ted’s sadness following George Wendt’s death. “What you saw on screen was exactly who he was off-screen with impeccable comedic timing and a deep loyalty to those he loved. I’ll miss our conversations and the quiet moments of friendship that meant the most,” he shared with Entertainment Weekly. George Wendt was 76.
