“Little House on the Prairie” Cast Recalls Haunting Line By Michael Landon

Michael Landon died from pancreatic cancer in 1991, less than ten years after Little House on the Prairie ended. Michael played the iconic Charles Ingalls for eight seasons of the historical drama. It’s hard to believe, but the show is 50 years old in 2025. To celebrate, Pamela Bob created the Little House 50. with original Little House cast members. In a recent episode Pamela, Alison Arngrim, Nellie Oleson, and Dean Butler, Almanzo Wilder, reminisced about a special episode. The cast recalled Remember Me from season two and the plot about a widow with incurable cancer trying to figure out who will care for her three young children after her death. Michael wrote and directed the episode, which feels special to Dean. “I think there are elements of this episode that are so quintessentially Michael and his whole take on so many different things,” he said. “One of his most quoted lines of dialogue, which interestingly is generally quoted to Laura Ingalls Wilder — was, ‘Remember me with smiles and laughter for that is how I will remember you.'” Michael Landon Died A Few Years After Wrote That Line Dean explained that when Michael Landon died in 1991, Melissa Gilbert included the special line as she spoke to the crowd. “The beautiful actress Patricia Neal said the line in the episode. And interestingly, Melissa Gilbert quoted the line at Michael’s funeral service in July of 1991, as part of her remarks, which were some of the most beautiful remarks I’d ever heard. Melissa, who’s incredibly articulate, was really, really spectacular in that situation,” Dean said. Alison added that those words will always remind her of the special times she shared with Michel Landon. “I can’t even hear those words without kind of choking up because it was so Michael,” she said. “It’s heart-wrenching in this episode, but then when it became literally Michael’s epitaph … it was like, just plunge a knife at the chest.” This story’s featured image is by NBCU Photo Bank via Getty.
