There’s a new teaser for James Gunn’s Superman—this one is, essentially, an ad for the fact that tickets are on sale now. It is also a bit of an introduction to this movie’s petty, attention-seeking Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult), who stalks into the Fortress of Solitude with his little gaggle of pals (including María Gabriela de Faría’s Engineer and Sara Sampaio’s Eve Teschmacher) to basically complain about how he needs to get rid of Superman—and his girlfriend, and his parents, and, well, you know. Superman gets way too much attention, ergo, bad guy monologue: activate!
Hoult’s sulky, suave Lex is oddly compelling, but the rest of this teaser is primarily a rehash of scenes from the previous trailers. Among its more unfortunate additions is a very Zach-Snyderesque slo-mo shot of teeth flying out of a mouth after a bad guy gets punched by Superman (David Corenswet). There is, to be fair, also one very endearing part in which Superman insists that he is doing very important stuff. Said stuff seems to primarily involve staying out of the way of Mr. Terrific (Edi Gathegi).
Corenswet still looks like a very promising Superman; the same goes for Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. Across the board, Superman is well cast; it also stars Nathan Fillion as the bowl-cutted Guy Gardner; Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl (who, with Gardner and Mr. Terrific, forms the Justice Gang); Alan Tudyk as one of Superman’s robot pals; Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho; and Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen. This one’s written and directed by James Gunn, and in theaters July 11th.[end-mark]
