Jelly Roll On Why He Voted For Cody Johnson To Win ACM Entertainer Of The Year Award: “He Preaches The Gospel… He Does It Unapologetically”
Making a cowboy emotional.
During a red carpet interview with Billboard ahead of the ACM Awards a couple days ago, Jelly Roll crashed Cody Johnson’s conversation, and Cody told him he needed to stop telling people who he voted for to be Entertainer of the Year because people kept asking him about it. Cody was in the category with Jelly Roll, in addition to Morgan Wallen, Kelsea Ballerini, Luke Combs, Chris Stapleton and Lainey Wilson, who ultimately won the coveted award.
And yes, artists do vote for ACM Awards winners, which are determined by votes from the Academy of Country Music’s professional membership, that includes artists as well as other industry professionals.
In the lead-up to the show, Cody admitted that he had his heart set on EOTY out of all the other seven awards he was nominated for, making him easily one of the most-nominated artists of the evening. He took home just one trophy for Song of the Year for “Dirt Cheap.” He joked with Jelly on the carpet:
“You can’ tell everybody you voted for me.”
Most artists don’t ever publicly reveal who they voted for, but Jelly had a lot to say about is friend and why he was so deserving of such a big award. In typical Jelly Roll fashion, he started preaching about why he voted for Cody for EOTY, getting fired up telling a story about how CoJo was there for him during a pivotal moment in his career:
“I tell everybody…. I had to come tell everybody that I voted for you again. Well, I’ve told this story a bunch, we’ll get there, but I wanna say this, one of the most important moments of my career, I won my first award at the CMT’s, and the first person I saw in that moment of my life was this cowboy.
And he hugged me like we grew up together, I get emotional thinking about it. I mean, literally, I never felt more accepted. And I was such a fan anyways. and I have a lot of acquaintances in this room, but I don’t have any f****** friends. That’s my brother.”
He also explained how much Cody goes about his career, taking no crap from anyone, touring the world and selling tons of tickets, while still being a faithful husband, father and farmer who is down-to-earth and humble through all of it:
“He’s the Entertainer of the Year because he preaches the gospel, he works harder than everybody, he tours the entire world, he does it unapologetically, he doesn’t ask help from anybody for anything, he does it his way and his way only, he makes no compromises, takes no bull****, and then he goes straight home, and he’s a husband, a father and a f****** farmer. That’s why he deserves to be Entertainer of the Year.”
I mean, I couldn’t have said it any better myself because his career and the he handles it all is extremely impressive. Cody has always been true to himself and has never made any bones about what he believes or who he is, a rarity in the music industry (even country), to be sure.
Jelly’s answer made Cody visibly emotional, and he said hearing that made him “want to cry”:
“I’m going to get emotional… that makes me want to cry. That was probably one of the nicest things anyone has ever said about me.”
It’s gotta be pretty moving to make a cowboy cry…
