Wednesday's proposal by Ursula von der Leyen to "consider" compulsory vaccination across the EU has caused concern.

Around the same time, it emerged that the incoming left-liberal government in Germany was also planning to introduce compulsory vaccination.

But in Finland, politicians are putting their foot down against the proposal, writes Hufvudstadsbladet.

"The probability of Finland forcibly vaccinating the entire population is extremely small," the newspaper writes.

Markus Lohi, chairman of the Finnish Parliament's Social and Health Care Committee, says no to vaccine coercion. He states that a vaccination obligation would probably infringe on the citizens' constitutional rights.

- I am generally very skeptical of coercion, and I think we can reach a sufficient degree of vaccination by other means, says Markus Lohi to Hufvudstadsbladet.

Lohi also notes that compulsory vaccination would further sharpen the tension in society between vaccination opponents and others. In addition, the purpose could not be fulfilled.

- Even fully vaccinated can be infected and infect others. You have to include it in the whole. Decision-makers must have cool heads on this issue, he says.

Johanna Ojala-Niemelä, chair of the Constitutional Affairs Committee, has not had time to delve into the issue, but notes that compulsory vaccination is not something that "should be approved without further ado in Finland".
