DOMESTIC. Up to and including the month of July, around 65,000 new residence permits were granted in Sweden - which corresponds to an entire Eskilstuna. When you exclude the Ukrainians, immigration under Ulf Kristersson's SD-supported government remains at the same level as last year, when the country was governed by the Social Democrats.

Ulf Kristersson and his government have promised a "paradigm shift" in migration policy with reduced immigration.

But after almost a year in power, no effect of this can be seen in the statistics. Instead, immigration remains at almost exactly the same level as before.

Last year, Morgan Johansson (S) was Minister of Migration. Today, the post is held by Maria Malmer Stenergard (M), who has outwardly profiled herself as a hard-line critic of the Social Democrats' generous immigration policy.

The number of new residence permits increased sharply in the spring of last year due to tens of thousands of Ukrainians coming to Sweden after Russia's invasion. These refugees were received in a separate process according to the so-called mass refugee directive.

During the first seven months of 2022, a total of 97,864 residence permits were granted. Of these, however, a full 39,530 were cases linked to the mass displacement directive, when the war had just broken out in Ukraine. Excluding these cases, there were 58,334 residence permits.

During the same period this year, a total of 64,306 residence permits were granted. Excluding the Ukrainians, the figure ends up at 57,917.

In other words, the number of non-Ukrainian immigrants who have been granted a residence permit in Sweden so far this year is almost exactly the same as in 2022.

Representatives of the Sweden Democrats have previously referred to it being "complicated processes" to reduce immigration. Instead of taking measures directly, very lengthy investigations have been added to the matter. The most important ones will not be clear until the 2026 election year, when S - if today's opinion polls are to be believed - will regain power
