Learning the '3 Ps' is the key to transforming yourself from a pessimist to an optimist

Learning the '3 Ps' is the key to transforming yourself from a pessimist to an optimist

Optimists have a significant advantage in life: they see the world as full of potential, so they experience more joy, lower stress, stronger coping skills, better physical health, and greater persistence in pursuing their goals. They also have a serendipity mindset, making them more likely to take advantage of lucky breaks and fortunate circumstances. Because when you are on the lookout for positivity, more of it will come your way.Even though life is easier for the optimist, pessimists will proudly say that they refuse to adopt that mindset because they are living in the “real world” and all of the Pollyanna stuff is garbage. However, for those who would like to change and begin to enjoy the benefits of seeing the glass as half full rather than half empty, it’s as easy as embracing the 3 Ps.Dr. Martin Seligman, one of the founders of the positive psychology movement, says people can build a resilient, positive outlook on life through a better understanding of personalization, pervasiveness, and permanence. To put it simply, the pessimist and the optimist have opposite reactions to negative experiences, and through the 3 Ps, we can learn to react positively. Dr. Martin Seligman.via U.S. Department of Defense/Wikimedia CommonsWhat are Dr. Martin Seligman’s 3 Ps?1. Personalization:A pessimistic person tends to blame themselves whenever something unfortunate happens, thinking, “It’s all my fault.” However, the optimist sees things in their totality, recognizing that it was a series of events that led up to the situation. “A lot of things went into this moment, so it’s not entirely my fault.”2. Pervasiveness:A pessimist sees a mistake and thinks their entire life is a failure. But an optimist sees it as an isolated incident, and one they can probably learn from. 3. Permanence: After the unfortunate incident, a pessimist sees it as proof that bad events are never-ending and can’t be stopped, and thinks they will never get over the setback. An optimist recognizes that everything is temporary and things will surely get better. A man sitting next to himself on the couch.via Canva/PhotosNow, let’s put this into practice. Let’s say that you got into a minor fender-bender where you hit the car in front of you at a stoplight.Instead of thinking, “It’s all my fault,” and “I can’t trust myself to drive without getting into an accident, and "I will always be a terrible driver." You can think to yourself, “It wasn’t all my fault because I got distracted by something on the radio,” and “I can get better at paying attention,” so that this doesn’t happen again. The great Henry David Thoreau once said, “The question is not what you look at, but what you see.” Optimists and pessimists are both looking at the same situation, and one is seeing it beneficially, while the other is allowing their worldview to hold them back. Sure, optimists may be a little naive to think that things will always turn out OK, But without them, we wouldn’t have anyone to try to make things better.

A 17-year-old was mocked for calling an $80 purse a 'luxury.' Her response was pure class.

A 17-year-old was mocked for calling an $80 purse a 'luxury.' Her response was pure class.

You never know what someone is going through, or more importantly, where they've come from. Insults of any kind are painful, but jabs towards someone’s financial status are particularly uncalled for for that very reason. In January 2023, Singapore-based Zoe Gabriel was on the receiving end of this particular flavor of mockery when she posted a TikTok about a purse from local retail brand Charles & Keith—a gift bought for her by her father. In her excitement, the 17-year-old called the bag, which costs around $80, a “luxury” item as she unwrapped it. Her excitement was sadly cut short by some of the negative comments she received. One comment seemed to stand out above the rest and prompted Gabriel to post an emotional response video.“We couldn’t buy new things as simple as bread from BreadTalk,” she said, referencing a popular Singaporean bakery. “That kind of thing was a luxury to us…Every time we passed by a store, my parents would just say 'next time', but next time would never come.”With this context, Gabriel shared why the shameful comment was so inconsiderate."To you, an $80 bag may not be a luxury. For me and my family, it is a lot, and I'm so grateful that my dad was able to get me one. He worked so hard for that money.”Watch the full video here: @zohtaco Replying to @cressy i am so happy and grateful for you, that you can consider charles and keith not a luxury. also btw if you google it, lots of sources do classify them as a luxury brand. so. Gabriel’s video quickly went viral, racking up over 17,000 comments from supportive viewers.People appreciated Gabriel's incredible humility and grace, not to mention her hard-working father."You have a good and caring dad," one commenter wrote."Your dad definitely raised you well," added another."I felt the exact thing when I used an ecobag in highschool and my schoolmates laughed at me," a third related. The video eventually spread so far and wide, it made its way to the actual founders of the Charles & Keith brand, Charles and Keith Wong. According to The Straits Times, the brothers were so “impressed” with Gabriel that they invited her and her father to have lunch and an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour at the company’s headquarters. See on Instagram But they didn’t stop there. The brand later posted a photo on its Instagram page showing Gabriel modeling a lilac-colored Charles & Keith bag for International Women’s Day, even announcing her as a new brand ambassador. To this day, Gabriel continues to share her love for the brand and encourage others to sport it proudly; even though it may not have the prestige and price tag of other designer bags. See on Instagram You’d think it would go without saying to just let people enjoy things, but we know that on the internet simple courtesy sometimes goes out the window. However, this is a heartwarming reminder that for every ignorant remark, there are also those who want to lift others up. See on Instagram Gabriel might have been ridiculed, but she has since seemed to come out on top, posting videos of herself wining and dining and dancing and traveling and basically having the time of her life. Sounds like the ultimate luxury to me.This article originally appeared two years ago. It has been updated.

Gen X has been designated the 'worst grandparents.' Sadly, their explanation makes sense.

Gen X has been designated the 'worst grandparents.' Sadly, their explanation makes sense.

Generation X, typically the children of Baby Boomers born between the years of 1965—1980, tend to have a complicated reputation depending on who you ask. Some view them as a feral generation never to be spoken of poorly without consequence, while others view them as innovators pushing us into the future. But in recent years, Gen Xers have been dubbed the "worst grandparents" by social media users. This multi-year conversation started when a 2023 video went viral calling Gen X out for being "terrible" grandparents, claiming that they never want to help with grandchildren. It didn't take long before other Millennials piled on to air their own grievances about Gen X grandparents. Most people criticizing the "new grandparents" were genuinely perplexed as to how they did not want to be more involved in the lives of their grandchildren. Grandparents reading granddaughter a story.via Canva PhotosUser @kylies.muse reveals in a video that she felt neglected by her Gen X parents growing up, saying, "It's quite a common theme for Gen X parents to be neglectful in some capacity and it's just crazy to me how more of them haven't learned from the past 20 to 30 years, instead of these grandparents seeing their kids having kids as an opportunity to restore the health in their relationships with their kids by showing up and helping them during the hardest transition of their lives, they would rather double down and compromise their relationship with that next generation. All for the sake of hyper-individualism and pride." @kylies.muse Gen x grandparents and their beloved empty nest ? just say you hate having a family ? #grandparents #grandparentsoftiktok The critique coming from the younger generation is not lost on Gen X, and they started coming out in force to respond with such vigor you'd think John Hughes had just announced the re-release of The Breakfast Club. It would seem that some of the people complaining about the lack of involvement have not considered that Gen X could have valid reasons for not immediately jumping in to take on grandparenting in the way some expect. A man by the name of John S. Blake gives a candid look into why Gen X was neglected as children and, in turn, became hype-independent at an early age."As a Gen X who's been on this earth long enough to have some hindsight I can tell you this, being independent at a young age is not a flex, what it actually means is capitalism is so brutal that our parents were forced to neglect their own children to stay alive. My generation was struggling so much that we had to leave our children unattended in order to produce enough so that we could afford to exist," Blake says. @blackfluidpoet Replying to @ellens0061 #foryoupage #homealone #fyp #foryou But perhaps one of the most heart wrenching explanations comes from an elder Millennial who goes by the name Amazing Dea. In response to another Millennial who asks about Gen X being "let off the hook," Dea shares, "Being as though you look like you might be a younger Millennial, let me go ahead and enlighten you. Generation X and older Millennials had to live through more than just this pandemic. We had the crack epidemic, we had the AIDS epidemic and let me tell you something, it was scary as f***."Dea went on to explain that there were apartment complexes burned due to high populations of people with AIDS living in them and how they would witness people go from being completely normal to being addicted to crack in a matter of weeks. It seems that depending on socioeconomic status, Gen Xers lived wildly different lives with the common theme being growing up entirely too fast at an extremely young age. Grandparent and grandchild hold hands.via Canva PhotosAnother person kindly breaks down the confusion over why Gen X isn't rising to the occasion of grandparenting. In response to the criticism she replies, "We grew up in a different time, first of all. A lot of us, meaning me, Gen X, I was raised by boomers. A lot of us did not get raised by our grandparents. We were like the feral kids, like by 7 and 9 years old we were actually babysitting our brothers and sisters, alright."The woman explains further in the video that Gen X doesn't want to raise their grandchildren or simply be babysitters, that there's a difference between expecting grandparents to be involved and expecting them to be babysitters. @that1crazy72 Let’s take it a step further. You share DNA with your grandkids they are part of you not everyone gets the privilege of being a grandparent so if you are one take that as a blessing #genxgrandparents In many of the response videos shared by Gen Xers, they certainly seem to love their grandchildren and children alike, but there's a discrepancy in expectation. The consensus of the forgotten generation seems to be that they had adult responsibilities much too early, were exposed to adult life experiences at a young age, and were often left to their own devices for long periods of time while also being told that their voices didn't matter. While the argument seems to be around their lack of involvement as grandparents, they appear to be saying that they want to enjoy the freedom they didn't have as children, while being valued as a person and not a babysitter. In many follow up videos, Gen Xers gushed over their grandchildren and how they loved when they were around. It's just that they draw the line at raising them. Maybe for some, their experiences with their own childhood isn't enough to move Gen X out of the "worst grandparents" category, but for others it provides much needed context. This article originally appeared in June.
