Robots are using AI to train themselves, which isn’t at all terrifying

Researchers at MIT have given robots everything they need to take over the world. A new algorithm called “Estimate, Extrapolate, and Situate (EES)” will soon allow robots to train themselves without human assistance. This robot self-training algorithm might sound handy, but I’m sure it’s going to create quite a stir in the world of robotic doomsayers. The EES algorithm not only lets the robots train themselves, but it will also allow them to identify weaknesses in their skills. They can then take those weaknesses and use them to determine where they need to improve their skills. The robots do this by using vision systems to assess their surroundings and the task they’ve been given—like cleaning up a room or sweeping. Unitree Robotics G1 humanoid robot cooking... breakfast? Image source: Unitree The robot can then use the EES to determine if additional practice is needed to enhance the robot’s performance. If it is, then the robot self-training algorithm will create training material for the robot and put it to use. The researchers tested the algorithm on one of Boston Dynamic’s Spot robot dogs, which already have a very strong history with menial tasks. This time, though, Spot did the job even smarter. Of course, there is a lot of concern over robots and the current state of AI. A lot of folks are concerned AI will overthrow humanity—and even the Godfather of AI is convinced that could happen at some point. But, it’s also clear that the folks at MIT probably designed this algorithm to improve robots' work with menial tasks—not with conducting warfare or other dangerous things. That certainly isn’t likely to stop others from using it—or other systems like it—for those particular things, though. All we can do is hope that China doesn’t get ahold of this robot self-training algorithm for its rifle-toting robot dogs. The EES algorithm is highlighted in a new paper available on the preprint server arXiv. A 17th-Century Japanese Wakizashi Unearthed in Berlin

Archaeologists in Berlin have made an astonishing discovery while excavating a former cellar in the city’s historic Molkenmarkt area. What was initially thought to be a simple military artifact from World War II turned out to be a rare Japanese Wakizashi, a short sword from the Edo period. This unexpected find has sparked intrigue and speculation about how such an object found its way to Berlin and what it reveals about the city’s hidden historical connections. Excavation Uncovers War-Torn Relics and a Mysterious Sword The discovery was made during the winter of 2022 when archaeologists from the Berlin State Office for Monument Preservation were conducting excavations in the Molkenmarkt area, particularly along Stralauer Street, reports the Berlin Staatliche Museum. This street, once narrower than today, was the site of several residential and commercial buildings until they were destroyed during World War II. The destruction and subsequent urban redesign efforts in the 1960s left little trace of the original structures, but the remnants of cellars from these buildings have remained hidden beneath the modern cityscape. As the archaeologists dug through the rubble-filled cellar vaults, they uncovered various militaria, including bridles, stirrups, curbs, and harnesses, likely hastily discarded in the chaotic final days of the war. Amidst these artifacts, a heavily corroded sword was found protruding from the debris. Read moreSection: ArtifactsAncient TechnologyNewsHistory & ArchaeologyRead Later

Principality of Antioch, the Pillar of the Crusader States

For a long period, the Crusaders coveted the reclamation of the Holy Lands in the Middle East. Fueled by their religious devotion, they spent many generations vying for power and freedom in those distant lands. And over the course of the Crusades, they established four important Crusader States, which stood as a shield against their enemies. The Principality of Antioch was one of the key crusader states, established during the First Crusade. It played a pivotal role in the history of the Crusades and the broader medieval world. This Latin Christian principality, centered around the city of Antioch, was not only a military and strategic stronghold but also a melting pot of cultures, religions, and political ambitions. Its history is marked by its establishment, the challenges it faced from both external and internal threats, and its eventual decline, which reflects the broader fate of the crusader states in the region. 5 Most Famous Clashes from the Crusades (Video) Understanding the Crusades from an Islamic Perspective Read moreSection: NewsAncient PlacesAsiaHistoryImportant EventsRead Later

How Unusual Were Some Medieval Crimes? (Video)

Medieval crimes ranged from the familiar—like theft and murder—to the distinctly unusual. One particularly notable crime was the violation of forest laws, which were instituted by King William after the Norman Conquest. These laws reserved vast areas for royal hunting and severely restricted activities like hunting, woodcutting, and even gathering food within these territories. The penalties were harsh; for example, killing the king’s deer could result in castration or blinding. Medieval Torture: The Terrifying Threat of Twisting off Limbs and Burning Flesh Caught Red-Handed! Law and Order in Medieval England Another crime was scandalum magnatum, a law aimed at preventing gossip about the nobility. This law, largely used to control political dissent, stood in stark contrast to the lesser offense of being a "scold"—a person, often a woman, who was constantly grumpy or verbally abusive. Punishments for scolding were relatively mild compared to those for scandalum magnatum, but the offense still reflects the period's focus on social order.
