Country Singer Rewrites Miranda Lambert’s Hit “The House That Built Me” From The House’s Perspective, & It Will Bring The Tears
Why am I crying on a random Tuesday afternoon?
It’s because I just watched a TikTok of a stunning reimagined rendition of Miranda Lambert’s “The House That Built Me,” which country artist Emmy Moyen shared, but with a twist. She penned the song from the perspective of what the house might say back to Miranda, and it’s truly beautiful.
Emmy previously did something similar with Eric Church’s “Springsteen,” writing a verse from the female perspective, and it was a hit with fans online too, so if you haven’t yet, go check that out HERE.
Of course, Miranda’s “The House That Built Me” was written by Tom Douglas and Allen Shamblin, and was actually originally intended for her ex-husband Blake Shelton to record. But once Miranda heard it for the first time on a CD demo he played, it resonated so deeply that she knew she had to record it herself.
She said previously in an interview with Today that she broke down the very first time she heard it (like many of us did, I’m sure):
“It was beautiful… I mean, I just started bawling from the second I heard it. Blake was like, ‘If you have a reaction to this song like that, then you need to cut it.”
Miranda ultimately included it as third single from her 2009 third studio album Revolution, where it eventually peaked at #1 and remains the fastest-rising single of her career. She won three ACM’s at that 2010 show, including one for Female Vocalist of the Year, Album of the Year for Revolution and Video of the Year for “White Liar”. The following year, she won three more ACM’s for “The House That Built Me”, including Song of the Year, Single of the Year, and Video of the Year.
It’s one of those songs for me that I can’t really listen to all that much, even though I think it’s one of the greatest country songs ever written… it makes me too emotional, and even though I love sad country songs more than anything, even for an ice queen like me, there are some that are just too much most days, and I don’t have the emotional capacity for it.
I was blown away with Emmy’s writing here, and the line at the end of the verse that says “Love, the house that built you” gave me chills. The whole concept is so creative, and she nailed it. I certainly think she did Miranda and the writers proud with her new verses:
“It’s been a while since you’ve been back here
I still remember you as a child
Ten years old, in a ponytail swinging
Putting handprints in the brand new drive
I could probably use a coat of fresh paint
But I’d miss the ‘how tall’ pencil marks in the hallway
Those six strings echo in your room,
Dog in the yard, he was my favorite too
I’m proud of how you’ve outgrown all my roots
And what you’ve grown into
Love, the house that built you”
Seriously, if you relate to this song in anyway, this version will probably have you in tears too…
“This is ‘The House That Built Me’ by Miranda Lambert, but I wrote what the house might say back.”
I can just hear them going back in forth in my head, and it would be fun to hear the songs mashed up or something because the new verse Emmy wrote fits right in, honestly, and perfectly captures the nostalgia, sadness and special memories that drew so many of us to Miranda’s original.
Emmy obviously got rave reviews online too, and I feel like I don’t even have to say this now, but do yourself a favor and check it out:
