“Rating Things Our Seller Left For Us On Move In Day”

When this new homeowner moved in, she was touched by the thoughtful things the seller left behind for her to make the house more comfortable. Some of the items were small, like toilet paper for the bathroom. Others were unbelievably generous! As the young woman prepared to settle in, she shared the previous owner’s beautiful gestures on social media. “Rating things our seller left for us on move in day,” she wrote at the beginning of her post. Screengrab from TikTok In her slideshow, she shared images of all the wonderful touches she discovered around her new home. First, she found a gorgeous set of wooden rocking chairs perfect for relaxing on the front porch. She couldn’t believe her eyes when she saw them sitting there! Her rating for this item? 10000000/10! “Are you kidding me??!” she wrote over the photo. “Bucket list item.” Screengrab from TikTok Next, the new homeowner found a note from the seller. It contained a description of local wildlife to look out for in the area — including a neighborhood cat named RayRay! Apparently, this kitty absolutely loves to hang out at the house. That’s why one of the next things the seller left behind was an adorable kitty shelter for RayRay to feel safe in! It seems like this home’s previous owner was especially invested in the future of their yard. Not only did they provide a number of beautiful outdoor planters and a hose to water them with, but they also gifted the new owner a fully-stocked fruit and vegetable garden! Among the things the seller left behind, this item received a rating of 1000000/10. This new homeowner was so grateful for the things the seller left for her! Screengrab from TikTok “I legit cannot believe how kind our home seller was to leave us all of these things,” wrote the buyer in their social media caption. “You can tell how much she cared about this place and wanted it to go to someone who loved it like we do.” In an earlier post, the new owner explained her plans for the house. Apparently, this historic 1920’s home was once known as the “Grand Dame.” Her goal is to restore the structure to its “full glory” and “bring back her personality through thoughtfully acquired pieces and interior design.” We’re sure the previous owner is delighted to pass her home onto someone who wants to put so much love and care into it. No wonder this seller left behind so many thoughtful things to help the buyer get started on her renovation! You can find the source of this story’s featured image here. "Crypto Bros" Are More Likely To Have Psychopathic And Narcissist Traits

Imagine a “crypto bro” and what do you see? Well, according to a new study, cryptocurrency zealots are more likely to be argumentative guys who spend a lot of their time in fringe social media communities and reading up on conspiracy theories. As for their personality, the findings suggest crypto investors are more likely to display "Dark Tetrad" personality traits, including narcissism, Machiavellianism, psychopathy, and sadism. Political scientists from the University of Toronto and the University of Miami took a deep dive into the political, psychological, and social make-up of cryptocurrency owners From a poll of over 2,000 American adults in 2022, the researchers found that around 30 percent owned some form of cryptocurrency. That’s a significant proportion of people and the researchers were keen to stress that these individuals held a diversity of political allegiances and identities.“Our results here suggest that crypto purchasers, on average, share an eclectic mix of political attitudes, identities, and predispositions. This finding contrasts with past claims that cryptocurrencies are some sort of financial shibboleth of the far-right,” the researchers write in their study. That said, the team was able to pick up some clear trends among the cryptocurrency fanatics. People who had purchased crypto were more likely to be men with a slightly higher than average income. These individuals, on average, are more likely to believe conspiracy theories, support extremist groups, and have a taste for populist sentiments. They were also more closely associated with the "Dark Tetrad" of personality traits: narcissism, Machiavellianism, psychopathy, and sadism (it used to be widely known as the “Dark Triad” but due to the correlation of sadism with Dark Triad traits, it has been added to the group).Another major trend among cryptocurrency owners was distrust of mainstream media outlets and a tendency to get information from “fringe” online sources.“Though our results certainly do not apply to every crypto user out there, on average, we found that crypto investment and ownership tends to appeal to people who are more argumentative, anti-authoritarian, and prefer to get their news from non-mainstream social media sites,” the study authors said in a statement. It’s trickier to understand why these associations exist, although the study does float some ideas. Cryptocurrencies aren’t produced or controlled by any central bank or government entity, allowing trading to be unregulated and anonymous.Given these qualities, crypto tends to attract people who are suspicious of institutions and mainstream authorities. As the researchers note, this type of distrust is “strongly associated with characteristics such as conspiracy thinking, low levels of analytic and scientific reasoning, anti-science attitudes, the ‘need for chaos,’ and nonmainstream political orientations."The study is published in the journal PLOS ONE.

Denisovans Survived For 160,000 Years In One Of Earth’s Harshest Places

A bone from Baishiya Karst cave in Tibet indicates Denisovans were living there roughly 40,000 years ago, well after modern humans had expanded over much of Asia. Combined with previous evidence of their presence in the area 190,000 years ago, the finding reveals extraordinary persistence in the face of exceptionally difficult conditions. It also increases the chances we’re not going to like the answer to the question of what ended this remarkable run.Extinct members of the humans are always mysterious, but the Denisovans are particularly shadowy. The only known fossil records of them come from three caves, but they live on a little in our genes, or at least the DNA of people with East Asian or Australasian ancestry. With so much of the picture missing, each new fossil discovery is incalculably precious, but also likely to raise more questions than it answers, as is the case for a rib bone found in Baishiya. The bone is one of over 2,500 preserved in the cave, dating from 190,000-30,000 years ago – but almost all were from prey, not humans. Study co-author Dr Geoff Smith of the University of Reading explained in a statement; "We were able to identify that Denisovans hunted, butchered and ate a range of animal species. Our study reveals new information about the behavior and adaptation of Denisovans both to high altitude conditions and shifting climates. We are only just beginning to understand the behavior of this extraordinary human species."Most of the bones Smith and co-authors were studying have been so badly broken that previous efforts had been unable to identify their sources. However, by applying mass spectrometry to collagen within the bones, the team was able to match 2,005 of them to a species, or at least a genus, revealing a lot about the changing ecosystem of the area, Among the yaks, small birds, woolly rhinoceroses, and even blue sheep (no, not green sheep) was a single Denisovan bone. It was dated as being from between 48,000 and 32,000 years ago – a wide range by many standards, but enough to know its owner lived during the last Ice Age and after modern humans had spread through Asia.Co-author Dr Jian Wang, of Lanzhou University, said, "Current evidence suggests that it was Denisovans, not any other human groups, who occupied the cave and made efficient use of all the animal resources available to them throughout their occupation."Digging at Baishya Karst Cave is a slow process, made no easier by the lack of oxygen for those without the Denisovan high altitude genes.Image Credit: Dongju Zhang’s group (Lanzhou University). The discovery confirms that Denisovans used the cave during the last Ice Age as well as the one before. Prey continued piling up during the interglacial period, so Denisovans were almost certainly responsible for that as well, even if we don’t have examples of their own bones at the time. The Denisovan rib bone, broken during excavation. So far its owner is not known to have been nicknamed Adam.Image Credit: Dongju Zhang’s group (Lanzhou University).Baishiya Cave has long been a place of pilgrimage for Buddhists, but we can only speculate if local memories of its ancient use contributed to it being seen as sacred. In 2019 it was revealed that inhabitants there 160,000 years ago were Denisovans, not Neanderthals as previously thought. This marked the first finding of Denisovan bones outside the cave for which they were named. More precisely it was probably the first identification of Denisovan bones elsewhere – it’s likely we’ve found their bones in other places and attributed them to other branches of the human family tree. Denisova Cave is a forbidding enough place today. At the same latitude as London, it gets much colder in winter thanks to being thousands of kilometers from the moderating effect of the oceans. Baishiya, at the eastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau, is a lot further south, but is also 3,300 meters (10,800 feet) above sea level, making it far colder still. To live there during an ice age, the Denisovans must have been extraordinarily cold-adapted.On the other hand, the fact their genes are today most abundant in New Guinea proves they could handle the warmth as well. Perhaps their greatest legacy to modern humans are the genes that allow modern Tibetans to thrive in the low oxygen conditions at such heights.Yet for all this, Denisovans themselves are gone, and their DNA a tiny proportion of the modern gene pool. “The question now arises when and why these Denisovans on the Tibetan Plateau went extinct,” Dr Frido Welker of the University of Copenhagen said. Considering that modern humans were by this point well established in surrounding areas, the answer is unlikely to be nice. The study is published open access in the journal Nature.

Campers Report Sighting of 5-Foot Creature with Glowing Eyes

A group of Houma high school graduates had quite the scare in the Natchitoches Parish woods, but deputies made sure they made it out safely, reports The Town Talk. A group of graduates had traveled to the Kisatchie National Forest to camp about a mile-and-a-half off the Backbone Trail in the southern part of the parish near the communities of Derry and Gorum. They intended to camp out in the area, according to a Facebook post from the Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Office. But one of the group, all 17 to 18 years old, called 911 call around 9:20 p.m. Friday. The caller was frightened, reads the news release. The caller asked for help “because they reportedly heard a growl and saw what appeared to be an animal that had glowing eyes and stood about 5 feet tall.” Two deputies were sent to the area “and began to walk towards the camp site looking for any suspicious activity or glowing eyes,” it reads. The group whistled for the deputies, who found them all safe. But, as the post stated, it could have been Bigfoot or a bear, so they escorted the whole group out of the forest. Deputies found nothing growling and no glowing eyes, it reads. The post signed off sending congratulations to the graduates, good luck in their futures and thanks for visiting Natchitoches Parish.
