How a Deft Wisconsin Lawmaker Beat DEI

Napoleon said that to master the art of war‚ you must “read over and over again” the campaigns of history’s most successful generals. The same advice applies if you want to master the art of legislating: You must study the strategies of the most successful legislators. To that end‚ any lawmaker that wants to thwart diversity‚ equity‚ and inclusion programs needs to study the skillful maneuvers of Robin Vos‚ the speaker of the Wisconsin State Assembly. As National Review reports‚ Vos has succeeded—in a divided government‚ where Republicans control the Legislature‚ while a Democrat holds the governor’s mansion—in destroying DEI programs throughout the University of Wisconsin system‚ which includes 13 campuses. Here’s how he did it.  First‚ he surveyed the battlefield. Behind him and the Republican-controlled Legislature was a supportive electorate that wanted him to abolish DEI on college campuses. In front of him were university administrators and a governor who were deeply entrenched in their support for DEI programs. A frontal assault—a bill simply abolishing or defunding DEI programs—would go nowhere unless Vos could shift them out of their entrenchments. Like a smart general‚ Vos knew that to do that he’d have to threaten something even more valuable to them than their DEI programs. But campus zealots seem to love nothing more than to put students into identity boxes and then segregate and discriminate on that basis. They want to do these things with an almost religious zeal. Yet Vos figured out that they love something even more; namely‚ money. He knew that campus zealots would never willingly destroy their own DEI apparatus. But he also knew that they would never say no to giving themselves a pay raise. So‚ he pitted those two interests against each other. He passed a budget that included pay raises for university employees and funding for new buildings. The budget also eliminated all DEI positions and cut $32 million from the university system’s budget—the amount that the system spent on DEI programs. The governor‚ Tony Evers‚ howled about the bill‚ but Vos had outflanked him. Evers couldn’t sacrifice raises for everyone in the system to save DEI programs‚ even as much as he cherished them. So‚ Evers surrendered and signed the bill. He did‚ however‚ line-item veto the part of the bill that eliminated the DEI positions. That meant that the university system could redeploy $32 million from other programs to keep its beloved DEI staffers paid. But Vos had anticipated that move. Before the pay raises could take effect‚ a committee in the Legislature had to approve them. Vos told the University of Wisconsin that the pay raises would be approved once the system voluntarily abandoned its DEI programs. As he had done to Evers‚ Vos had outflanked University of Wisconsin President Jay Rothman. Despite Rothman’s support for DEI‚ he knew that his position was untenable‚ so he‚ too‚ surrendered and agreed to cut the DEI programs. Specifically‚ he agreed that the university system would freeze all DEI hiring‚ move all DEI staffers to other positions‚ stop using diversity statements in student applications‚ and stop discriminating based on race‚ sexuality‚ and other identity characteristics in faculty hiring. Vos got even more. Rothman agreed that the Madison campus would create a professorship for the study of conservative thought and that all campuses would offer a course on free speech for undergraduates. Finally‚ the university system would elevate academic merit by automatically giving admission to all Wisconsin students who graduated in the top 5% of their high school classes‚ regardless of his or her race. Despite Rothman’s agreement‚ the deal still had to make it through the liberal-controlled university board of regents‚ which rejected it. The regents thought that Vos’ attack was just a feint‚ and that he wasn’t serious about blocking the pay raises and building funds. But Vos’ attack was serious. “We are not changing one thing in this deal‚” Vos said‚ before inviting the regents to walk away from it. They surrendered four days later and approved the whole deal. Their love of money trumped their commitment to DEI. Vos saw this‚ and like an expert general‚ exploited it to secure an astonishing victory. It was a victory all the more astonishing‚ given that Vos’ Republican Party does not have complete control of the state government. That was the art of legislating at its finest. Opponents of DEI in other statehouses should take note and—like Napoleon did of history’s greatest commanders—study and emulate it. Have an opinion about this article? In Liberal Media‚ Seldom Is Heard a Discouraging Word About Joe Biden

Is President Joe Biden treating the press better than former President Donald Trump did? It’s a low bar to argue he doesn’t describe the media as “enemies of the people.” Is he really treating them as they view themselves—as representatives of the people? Or is he not interested in addressing the people? Are they all too negative? Ben Smith at Semafor reported on the White House holiday party for journalists‚ described as a chance “to dispel his main problem with the U.S. media right now—the undercurrent of concern that he’s too old for the job. It was an opportunity to say‚ in some sense: Hey‚ you idiots‚ I may be old‚ but I’m fine.” Smith wrote that Biden made brief remarks at the East Wing party‚ “which began with the usual joke—I’m for a free press‚ even when you drive me crazy. But he then strayed into a couple of hazy monologues‚ which ended only when his wife interrupted him to remind him it was a party.” This is why Biden’s aides are always keeping the Hazy Monologues President away from reporters. Smith concluded: “I’d expect that speech to echo quietly in reporters’ minds—and in their coverage—over the coming months.” In mid-December‚ the number of solo presidential press conferences this year is just three. When Biden grants a television interview‚ to Scott Pelley at “60 Minutes” or to Nicolle Wallace‚ you can guess that the interviewers have promised Team Biden that Old Joe won’t get any tough questions. Instead‚ they ask him to explain how the Republicans are a dangerous pile of extremists. Ask something negative‚ and he gets cranky‚ like telling Fox’s Peter Doocy “I knew you’d have a lousy question” (because it was about Hunter Biden). Alex Thompson at Axios filed a piece quoting White House insiders who say Biden has a “Hunter trigger‚” that only longtime aides feel they can withstand the president’s fury or dejection at the subject. Reporters receive the fury when they ask‚ so he’s told not to answer questions‚ or announces he has a list‚ authorized by some authority‚ of reporters that he’s told to call on. Then consider that as president‚ Biden has never granted an interview to White House reporters for major newspapers like The New York Times and The Washington Post. (AP reporter Josh Boak muddled through a Pelley/Wallace-style interview.) The White House complains about negative coverage‚ but the old media are still overwhelmingly protective. His gaffes are routinely ignored. On Dec. 8‚ the Republican National Committee tweeted out video of the president saying‚ “Over a billion‚ three hundred million trillion three hundred million dollars!” ABC‚ CBS and NBC don’t share embarrassing outbursts like those. Even their late-night comedians generally skip those. Trump runs circles around Biden in granting access to TV and print outlets. Nobody in his circle seems to restrict his access or protect him from outbursts and gaffes. The pro-Biden outlets thrive on his comments‚ like the “dictator for a day” joke to Sean Hannity. The media claim they are the guardians of democracy‚ but they’ve shown zero interest in Biden doing a debate with Democratic presidential rivals Rep. Dean Phillips of Minnesota or Marianne Williamson. The public tells pollsters they’d like to see Biden debate. But reporters like to pretend that there are no primary elections for Democrats this time. When it comes to taking questions‚ Biden is the bumper-bowling President. Every bowling ball he throws will score because no one allows a gutter ball. That leaves the impression that Biden’s not running the country as much as other people are running Biden. Inside the Federal Probe of Pitt’s Fetal Organ Harvesting Program

Inside the Federal Probe of Pitt’s Fetal Organ Harvesting Program

A federal probe may reveal violations of law in the University of Pittsburgh’s testing of body parts from aborted babies‚ according to a pro-life organization monitoring the school’s program. The U.S. government began investigating the University of Pittsburgh’s protocols in its program to harvest fetal organs‚ documents released under the Freedom of Information Act reveal.  Pitt came under fire in August 2021 for potentially violating federal law by altering abortion procedures to harvest organs from babies old enough to survive outside the womb.  Planned Parenthood of Western Pennsylvania provides university researchers with the aborted bodies of unborn babies‚ according to the pro-life Center for Medical Progress‚ which sought the documents.  The Office of Inspector General in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services subpoenaed the University of Pittsburgh on Oct. 28‚ 2021‚ for information about its organ-harvesting program called Genitourinary Development Molecular Anatomy. The subpoena is revealed in documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act by the Center for Medical Progress and the government watchdog Judicial Watch‚ then published Dec. 12 by the center.  David Daleiden‚ founder of the Center for Medical Progress‚ told The Daily Signal that he believes Pitt’s research program disregarded humanitarian concerns associated with testing fetal body parts.  “People who are disturbed by barbaric experiments with aborted babies would love nothing more than to see institutions like the University of Pittsburgh commit to ethical research only‚” Daleiden said in an email Thursday‚ adding that such ethical research “does not rely on exploiting the unequal and vulnerable status of children in the womb and women or couples experiencing a challenging pregnancy.”   Daleiden‚ his associates at the Center for Medical Progress‚ and his lawyers have been entangled in legal proceedings since 2015‚ when Daleiden made and released undercover videos in which Planned Parenthood officials apparently discussed the sale of fetal body parts to research facilities. Planned Parenthood consistently has denied any wrongdoing by its employees in the recorded conversations. In November 2019‚ after a civil trial‚ a California jury awarded Planned Parenthood and others over $2.2 million. That verdict is under appeal. In a Nov. 5‚ 2022‚ email to a National Institutes of Health official uncovered by the FOIA request‚ Pitt’s senior vice chairman for research‚ Rob Rutenbar‚ wrote: “With regard to your request for documentation/information‚ please be aware that we received a subpoena from HHS OIG requesting similar documentation on Oct. 28.”  More than 65 Republican congressmen and senators had demanded an investigation into fetal tissue research in a letter dated Sept. 21‚ 2021. The lawmakers sent the letter after the Center for Medical Progress revealed that the National Institutes of Health had awarded about $1.5 million to Pitt to study “congenital diseases of the genitourinary tract (kidneys‚ bladder‚ ureter‚ urethra)” by obtaining those organs from aborted babies for research.  The released documents show that the congressional lawmakers’ call for a federal investigation was answered by HHS’ Office of Inspector General.  Michael Lauer‚ NIH’s deputy director for extramural research‚ emailed Pitt’s Rutenbar asking for a copy of the school’s human fetal tissue testing policies and standard procedures‚ documentation of patient consent protocols‚ tissue collection procedures‚ and an explanation of tissue obtained from unborn babies after 25 weeks of gestation.  “The scientific and ethical challenges associated with research utilizing human fetal tissue make it imperative that researchers and their organizations be fully aware of and in compliance with the federal requirements‚” Lauer said in the email to Rutenbar dated Sept. 27‚ 2021.  Pitt’s 2016 application for a federal grant of $600‚000 emphasized that it minimizes the “warm ischemia time” for aborted fetuses‚ meaning the amount of time a baby’s body parts would remain at body temperature after the blood supply had been cut off but before the body parts were cooled. Federal law prohibits the alteration of abortion procedures solely for the purpose of obtaining fetal tissue. NIH‚ HHS‚ and the University of Pittsburgh did not respond to The Daily Signal’s requests for comment before publication time. The Daily Signal also sought comment from Planned Parenthood of Western Pennsyvania and the Planned Parenthood Federation of America‚ but received no response. Rutenbar acknowledged Pitt’s awareness of allegations about the university’s fetal testing procedures but denied misconduct in an Oct 26‚ 2021‚ letter to the NIH’s Lauer‚ the released documents show. “As we discussed during the phone call‚ the university maintains rigorous protocols and procedures to ensure that researchers comply with all legal requirements and ethical duties related to fetal tissue research‚” Rutenbar said in the email.  “While we have no evidence of non-compliance with any applicable legal requirements‚” the Pitt official added‚ “as part of our ongoing commitment to our obligations‚ we have commissioned the law firm of Hyman‚ Phelps &; McNamara to conduct an independent review of the university’s fetal tissue research processes and practices.” In the email‚ Rutenbar described Pitt’s protocol for picking up fetal tissue from Planned Parenthood and reviewing the patient consent form. No tissue was tested from unborn babies after 25 weeks‚ he said.  Pitt’s biospecimen core‚ the group responsible for tissue research‚ minimizes “warm ischemia time‚” defined as “the time between the core staff receiving the specimen and depositing it into the core’s storage facility‚” Rutenbar added.  “This means that once tissue is made available to the core‚ core staff transport it to the storage facility as quickly as possible and log the time it took to do so‚” he said.  Senior administrators at Pitt defended the school’s organ-harvesting policies‚ referring to investigations of the university’s tests on fetal tissue as “efforts to undermine important science using fetal tissue‚” according to one of the obtained documents. Pitt responded to “rotating attacks about research using fetal tissue” with what it called an outside review of procedures‚ while believing it followed all appropriate laws‚ Jeremy Berg‚ Pitt’s associate senior vice chancellor for science strategy and planning‚ told NIH Distinguished Investigator Francis Collins‚ the agency’s former director‚ in an email Oct. 16‚ 2021.  “We have been discussing these issues and it seems that this is an organized attempt to delegitimize science based on fetal tissue rather than to identify misbehavior (although‚ of course‚ any misbehavior does create opportunities for outrage)‚” Pitt’s Berg wrote to NIH’s Collins. “In light of this‚ we feel that the scientific community would benefit if more institutions could stand together to take some of the power out of the one-at-a-time strategy that appears to be operating.” The Center for Medical Progress‚ Daleiden’s pro-life organization‚ hopes to undo redactions regarding results of the federal subpoena in the documents released under the Freedom of Information Act.  “Working together with Judicial Watch‚ we are continuing litigation against NIH seeking further production and un-redaction of documents under FOIA concerning the University of Pittsburgh and the GUDMAP program‚” Daleiden said‚ referring to Pitt’s tissue-harvesting program. “We hope to have more to report soon.” The federal investigation of Pitt’s program is an encouraging sign‚ but it would be more so if the Biden administration forbade use of taxpayer dollars to support “unethical and obsolete” fetal tissue research‚ Melanie Israel‚ a policy analyst in The Heritage Foundation’s DeVos Center for Life‚ Religion‚ and Family‚ told The Daily Signal. (The Daily Signal is Heritage’s news outlet.) “When President Biden took office‚ HHS reversed the Trump administration’s ban on funding for NIH intramural research and a requirement that extramural research be subject to an ethics advisory board‚” Israel said. “The next conservative administration should right the ship. NIH should support life-saving research that also respects innocent human life‚ and Congress should prohibit research using fetal tissue obtained from elective abortions once and for all.” Have an opinion about this article? An Inside Look At 100 Years of Honoring America’s War Dead

America is a nation built on distinct individualism as well as common values. This sense of diversity in unity is something reflected in a very physical sense in the war cemeteries and monuments maintained by the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC)‚ which in 2023 marked its 100th year anniversary. The commission maintains 26 cemeteries and 32 battlefield memorials across 17 countries around the globe. No two sites are the same. In fact‚ they are non-standard by design. In an aesthetic contrast with the war cemeteries maintained by other nations‚ ABMC cemeteries are designed to appear unique in every aspect of their architecture‚ layout and memorial artwork‚ yet uniting the fallen with common headstone styles and an American flag. The chapel interior with names of the missing is shown at the Somme American Cemetery in Bony‚ France. “I think what our nation does is a statement about our people and what it means to be an American‚” Charles K. Djou‚ ABMC Secretary‚ told Military History Quarterly in an interview. “Every single site has something amazing and beautiful.” Despite its tradition of individualism‚ the ABMC has several important factors common to every memorial site. “Where people are buried is not distinguished by race‚ rank‚ color or creed. This is something we take pride in‚” said Djou. “Black and white soldiers are buried side by side. Generals are buried side by side with privates. There will always be a flagpole flying the American flag and that will be the highest point in all of our cemeteries.” One Hundred Years of History   The ABMC originated in the wake of the First World War. It owes its name to the shared efforts of U.S. authorities to find fitting and respectful ways to preserve American war graves and battle monuments‚ which were then scattered across Europe and needed to be consolidated and maintained in a respectful manner.   “During the course of the war‚ temporary burials were marked in a number of different ways. If people had time‚ sometimes they would construct a wooden cross or sometimes stick a rifle in the ground with a helmet on it‚” explained Michael Knapp‚ ABMC’s Chief of Historical Services. “People who made it back to rear areas and hospitals were buried in temporary gravesites that were more established and those generally had wooden crosses or some sort of grave marker.” As these cemeteries were consolidated‚ graves were temporarily marked with white wooden crosses‚ with the exception of Jewish soldiers whose graves were instead marked with a white wooden Star of David by request of the Jewish community. Although many people argued for headstones similar to those in Arlington National Cemetery today to serve as the permanent grave markers‚ the ABMC’s first chairman‚ Gen. John J. Pershing‚ insisted that the white crosses be preserved. “Pershing was adamant that we keep the look similar to the look of the temporary headstones with white crosses row on row – almost taken verbatim from the words of John McCrae’s poem ‘In Flanders Fields‚’” said Knapp. Art and flags are displayed in the Brittany American Cemetery at St. James‚ France‚ Therefore all war dead‚ apart from those of Jewish faith‚ are buried with crosses regardless of their religious beliefs.  “The Latin Cross in the ABMC cemetery usage is considered symbolic rather than religious‚” explained Knapp. “Although predominantly it’s a Christian symbol‚ it was not chosen specifically as such.” In contrast to the war burial arrangements of other nations‚ the U.S. government allowed American families to choose whether their loved one was brought back to the United States for burial or whether he would be buried overseas. This was the case in both world wars‚ Knapp said‚ and all expenses were paid by the U.S. government regardless of the family’s choice. Works of Art   What sets each war cemetery apart is the artwork and conceptual design unique to each space. The ABMC consulted prominent architects and artists to propose designs for each war cemetery. “You see a lot of variation‚” said Knapp. “It’s fascinating because no two are alike. There is no standard blueprint. Even the physical layout of all the cemeteries is different. Every aspect of ours is different. It’s very unique. I don’t believe any other country does it that way.” The art is particularly evident in the non-sectarian chapel found in each cemetery. This offers family members and visitors a quiet place to reflect. The design‚ architecture‚ and art inside also reflect different themes and images to honor the dead.  “The art tends to be symbolic and allegorical‚” said Knapp. For example‚ the Brittany American Cemetery in France is arranged to resemble the flaming sword within a shield which was the emblem of Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF). The ceiling of the chapel in at the Sicily-Rome Cemetery reflects the constellations at the precise moment that Allied troops landed in Anzio. The Need to Reflect and Respect What stands out most of all to Djou‚ however‚ are the sheer number of war dead in each location. Standing amid the vast armies of white crosses is an overpowering experience. “It takes your breath away honestly‚” he said. Many of the cemeteries and war memorials‚ particularly in Europe‚ are within easy reach of major cities and popular tourist locations. However‚ Djou expressed the view that not enough Americans are coming to pay their respects to the fallen despite having opportunities to do so. The white crosses stand row on row in the Sicily-Rome American Cemetery. “So many Americans will go to Paris and see the Eiffel Tower. They will go to Rome and see the Colosseum‚” he said. “They don’t realize that the reason that you can visit those places is because of all of those thousands of young American service members who fought to free all these places.” Djou encourages all Americans traveling abroad to stop at a war memorial or cemetery even briefly‚ to visit those lost in battle who never had the chance to go home. “So many of these sites are just a few minutes away and so many Americans don’t realize how close they are.”

Pythagorean Theorem Found On Clay Tablet 1‚000 Years Older Than Pythagoras

Study math for long enough and you will likely have cursed Pythagoras's name‚ or said "praise be to Pythagoras" if you're a bit of a fan of triangles. But while Pythagoras was an important historical figure in the development of mathematics‚ he did not figure out the equation most associated with him (a2 + b2 = c2). In fact‚ there is an ancient Babylonian tablet (by the catchy name of IM 67118) that uses the Pythagorean theorem to solve the length of a diagonal inside a rectangle. The tablet‚ likely used for teaching‚ dates from 1770 BCE – centuries before Pythagoras was born in around 570 BCE. Another tablet from around 1800–1600 BCE has a square with labeled triangles inside. Translating the markings from base 60 – the counting system used by ancient Babylonians – showed that these ancient mathematicians were aware of the Pythagorean theorem (not called that‚ of course) as well as other advanced mathematical concepts."The conclusion is inescapable. The Babylonians knew the relation between the length of the diagonal of a square and its side: d=square root of 2‚" mathematician Bruce Ratner writes in a paper on the topic. "This was probably the first number known to be irrational. However‚ this in turn means that they were familiar with the Pythagorean Theorem – or‚ at the very least‚ with its special case for the diagonal of a square (d2 = a2 + a2 = 2a2) – more than a thousand years before the great sage for whom it was named."So why did this get attributed to Pythagoras? No original writing from Pythagoras survives. What we know of him was passed on by others‚ in particular the Pythagoreans – members of a school he set up in what is now modern-day southern Italy. The school‚ named the Semicircle of Pythagoras‚ was secretive‚ but knowledge learned there or discovered was passed on‚ and often attributed to the man himself."One reason for the rarity of Pythagoras original sources was that Pythagorean knowledge was passed on from one generation to the next by word of mouth‚ as writing material was scarce‚" Ratner continued. "Moreover‚ out of respect for their leader‚ many of the discoveries made by the Pythagoreans were attributed to Pythagoras himself; this would account for the term ‘Pythagoras’ Theorem’."Though Pythagoras did not come up with the theory‚ his school certainly popularized it‚ and it became associated with him for the next few thousand years‚ at least. An earlier version of this article was published in October 2023.

Wyoming man who saved woman and children from a hellish fate awarded highest civilian honor for heroism

A Wyoming man on Monday was awarded North America's highest civilian honor for heroism. The Carnegie Hero Fund Commission recognized former oil worker Ryan Pasborg‚ 33‚ for risking life and limb last winter to save a young mother and her 4-year-old son from an inferno in James Town. 'He gave them a fighting chance' On Feb. 1‚ 2022‚ Stephanie Wadsworth and her four young children — then ages 12‚ 8‚ 6‚ and 4 — were sleeping in their home on the block of Highway 374 in James Town when investigators suspect a child's malfunctioning hoverboard kindled a flame. The fire spread quickly and burst out of the home's bedroom window‚ catching the eye of a passerby headed down 374. Although running late for work on the oil field‚ Pasborg‚ of Rock Springs‚ noticed there were no emergency vehicles at the scene. In the way of help‚ he was it. Pasborg didn't miss a beat. He rushed over to the house and called 911. As he pulled into the driveway‚ the derrickman spotted a young girl and two boys walking out of the house‚ according to the Sweetwater County Sheriff's Office. Deputy Jason Mower with the SCSO said‚ "He didn't have time to think. He knew what he thought was the right thing to do and he acted‚" KSTU-TV reported at the time. The oil man made his way into the burning home through the garage. Unable to see his way through on account of the thick smoke‚ Pasborg pulled himself forward on his hands and knees. Several feet into the kitchen‚ he bumped up against a little figure: 4-year-old Weston Wadsworth. Pasborg grabbed the child and carried him outside. Since the windchill temperature was well below zero‚ Pasborg gathered the children together and set them in his truck to stay warm. Once the children were secure‚ Pasborg bolted back into the compromised structure to finish the job he had set out to do. Again‚ Pasborg crawled through the kitchen and again he came across another crumpled figure‚ this time the children's scorched and suffocating mother. Pasborg dragged Stephanie outside and began performing CPR until life returned to her. Cowboy State Daily reported that Stephanie Wadsworth suffered burns to 77% of her body and would certainly have perished were it not for Pasborg's quick intervention. After reuniting the family‚ Pasborg got Stephanie Wadsworth and her children a safe distance away from the inferno and waited for first responders to arrive. According to the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission‚ while Pasborg inhaled smoke‚ he didn't seek medical treatment. Deputy Mower indicated that Pasborg's help did not end there. He later personally delivered "several hundred dollars' worth of clothing and necessities" to the family at their grandmother's house. Sheriff John Grossnickle said‚ "Not only is it a blessing in its own right that Mr. Pasborg was in the right place at the right time‚ but his willingness without second thought to risk his own life to help save this family was the difference between life and death for this young mother and her child; he gave them a fighting chance." "There are no words to adequately express the magnitude of Ryan's bravery other than he is a perfect example of what it means to be a real hero‚" added Grossnickle. 'Old-school hometown do-good people' The Sweetwater County Sheriff's Office formally celebrated Pasborg's heroism in May 2022‚ indicating that the mother and child spared a fiery death were "well on their way down the road to recovery." Pasborg also received a hero's welcome during the 2022 Cheyenne Frontier Days rodeo. Green River Man Receives Standing Ovation At Cheyenne Frontier Days youtu.be This week‚ Pasborg received the Carnegie Medal Award. "This award is given for heroism that we don't see everyday‚" Jewels Phraner‚ a spokeswoman for the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission‚ told the Cowboy State Daily. "It is an award that represents the best of humanity and we love to recognize people who demonstrate that." Pasborg‚ nominated for the award by the Sweetwater County Sheriff's Office‚ indicated he didn't know what the medal was but was nevertheless honored to be recognized. The hero's wife‚ Alexandria‚ told the Wyoming paper‚ "I get so emotional." "My husband won't tell you‚ but that event took a toll on him mentally‚" said Alexandria. "He wakes up with nightmares sometimes. We are so thankful and grateful for this." In addition to a $7‚500 check and scholarship opportunities‚ the award will pay for the cost of medical expenses and mental health treatments Pasborg may have incurred in relation to the rescue. Pasborg‚ who recently lost his oil job‚ said‚ "Both with Christmas just a week away and the bills‚ the timing was perfect." Sheriff Grossnickle stressed the hero has maintained contact with the family since the rescue. "I am honored to know someone like that‚" said Grossnickle. "Ryan is the example of what Wyoming is made of — the old-school hometown do-good people that make up our communities." Like Blaze News?
