Takeaways From Night 3 of Republican National Convention

Delegates were in high spirits Wednesday night about nominee Donald Trump’s prospects in the Nov. 5 election as they gathered for the third night of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. The night’s most anticipated speech probably was the one to be delivered by Trump’s pick for vice president, Sen. JD Vance of Ohio. Trump announced his choice of Vance on Monday, the first day of the GOP convention. Convention delegates formally nominated both Trump and Vance on Monday night. Trump, who has attended part of each night’s events, is scheduled to deliver his acceptance speech Thursday night. Other speakers scheduled Wednesday night included the 45th president’s son, Donald Trump Jr., former House Speaker Newt Gingrich of Georgia; and Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., who last year led a successful GOP effort to oust House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif. The convention’s Milwaukee location is significant for two big reasons: Wisconsin is a key battleground state where Trump and President Joe Biden, his Democratic opponent, have been neck-and-neck in polls. And the Republican Party was founded in 1854 in Ripon, Wisconsin, about 90 minutes from Milwaukee. This regularly updated report spotlights some key moments from the third night of the GOP convention. Jackson: Trump ‘Took a Bullet for Our Country’ Rep. Ronny Jackson of Texas, a Navy doctor who served 14 years as White House physician, including for Trump, made a strong comparison between Biden and former presidents.  “Now I can say I served a president who literally took a bullet for our country,” Jackson said, prompting strong applause. “I have never been prouder of his leadership than I was last Saturday.” “His warrior spirit and his display of will to keep fighting for our country, even after getting shot down, will go down as an all-time moment in American history,” the Texas Republican told delegates. Jackson contrasted Trump with Biden, who many Americans—including Democrats—say they fear isn’t up to the job, based on his poor debate performance June 27 with Trump as well as his public appearances and news interviews since the debate on CNN. Jackson’s remarks likely were drafted hours before the White House announced Wednesday evening that Biden had canceled campaign stops because he had tested positive again for COVID-19 in Las Vegas. The president returned to his home in Delaware for a “long weekend,” The Associated Press reported just before 6:30 p.m. Navarro: ‘I Went to Prison So You Won’t’ “I went to prison so you won’t have to,” Peter Navarro, a lawyer and former White House aide who advised Trump on trade, told the crowd inside Fiserv Forum. “I am your wake-up call,” Navarro added.  Earlier Wednesday, Navarro was released from a federal prison in Miami, where he did time after being convicted of contempt of Congress for declining to testify to Democrats’ House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack on the Capitol.  “If they come for me, if they come for Donald Trump, be careful, they will come after you,” Navarro said.  He called the House select committee a “sham” committee that demanded he violate the law by divulging conversations with Trump despite his executive privilege.  “The J6 committee demanded that I betray Donald J. Trump to save my own skin. I refused,” Navarro said.  After a partisan congressional committee and a Democrat majority in the House found him in contempt, he said, a Democrat-run Justice Department—what he called the “Department of Injustice”—prosecuted him.  Prosecutions for contempt of Congress are rare. In one example, the Justice Department recently opted not to prosecute Attorney General Merrick Garland for contempt of Congress, although he refused to produce an audio recording of Biden’s interview with a special counsel about his possession of classified documents.  Gaetz: ‘They Can Run Biden From the Nursing Home’ Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., asserted that the president Americans saw at the June debate, and which the media finally noticed, is the same Biden who has been in the White House for years.  “Democrats have been hiding the real Biden for years,” Gaetz said. “We saw people in the witness protection program more often than we saw unscripted Biden.” “They can run Biden from the nursing home, [Kamala] Harris, George Clooney, Robert De Niro, whoever they want to run,” he said. “We are on a mission to rescue and save this country, and we ride or die with Donald John Trump to the end.” In talking about inflation, Gaetz joked about Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., who was convicted Tuesday on bribery charges involving foreign entities.  “Under Biden-Harris, inflation has gotten so bad you can no longer bribe Democrat senators with cash alone,” he said. “You have to use gold bars just so the bribes hold value.” Gingrich Accuses Biden of ‘Make-America-Weak Ideology’  Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich of Georgia contrasted Trump and Biden’s foreign policies and the results. “Under Trump, we achieved peace through strength,” Gingrich said. “Under Biden, we have war, suffering, death, and a world teetering on the edge of World War III.” The former House speaker criticized Biden for the botched withdrawal from Afghanistan as well as weakness in the face of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel.  “The contrast between President Trump’s realistic policy of resolute strength in a dangerous world, and President Biden’s policies of appeasement, weakness, and self-delusion may be the biggest difference between the Make America Great Again movement and the Make-America-Weak ideology of the Left,” Gingrich said. Abbott: ‘I Took the Border to Them’ Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said that when the Biden administration took 50 acres of land along the U.S.-Mexico border to process 5,000 illegal aliens a day, he directed the National Guard “to take back our land and wire it shut.” Abbott said there are no longer 5,000 migrants per day trying to enter Texas. “Now that the National Guard has wired that shut, on average, there is one illegal immigrant crossing the border at that location a day,” Abbott said.  The Republican governor said that when Biden administration officials refused to come to Texas to see the state of the southern border, “I took the border to them.” “I began busing illegal immigrants to Washington, D.C.,” Abbott said to a rousing ovation. “We have continued busing migrants to sanctuary cities across the entire country. Those buses will continue to roll until we secure our border.” This is a developing news story and will be updated throughout the night, so check back. Warning at RNC From Parents of American-Israeli Hostage: ‘Time Is Running Out’

MILWAUKEE—Ronen Neutra sat next to his wife Orna, a piece of tape on his dark blazer with the number 285 written in black marker—the number of days his son has been a Hamas hostage in the Gaza Strip.  For nearly 300 days, Omer Neutra, an Israeli-American citizen, has likely not received the “basic humanitarian needs that any human being deserves,” the hostage’s father said during a press conference Wednesday at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.  “We’re not sure if our son even got medical attention or anything,” Neutra said, adding, “In fact, we’re not even sure our son is alive.”  The Neutras are attending the GOP convention to share their son’s story and advocate his release as well as the release of all the hostages held by Hamas, the terrorist organization that killed about 1,200 people inside Israel on Oct. 7, taking another 250 hostages. Omer Neutra was 22 on Oct. 7 and is believed to have been taken hostage by Hamas during the attacks. He now is one of about 120 hostages still believed to be held hostage in Gaza.  Although negotiation efforts continue for the release of the hostages, the senior Neutra warns, “time is running out.”  “Everybody must come back,” Neutra said. “And by bringing them back, it’s going to bring a cease-fire to the area. [The terror group] Hezbollah is going to stop shooting to the north of Israel. Hundreds of thousands of Israelis can come back to their homes. This is the solution. But it starts by bringing back the 120 hostages, among them eight Americans.”  Concerned Women for America, a Christian and conservative policy organization led by Penny Nance, hosted the press conference as part of the group’s “She Prays, She Votes” bus tour ahead of the Nov. 5 presidential election.  Ronen and Orna Neutra, left, speak with Penny Nance, president and CEO of Concerned Women for America, at the Republican National Convention alongside Liz Naphtali, right, to advocate release of the 120 hostages still believed to be held in Gaza. In addition to Omer Neutra, American citizens Edan Alexander, Sagui Dekel-Chen, Hersh Goldberg-Polin, and Keith Siegel are believed to be alive in Gaza. The bodies of three other Americans—Itay Chen, Judy Weinstein, and Gad Haggai—also are believed to be in Gaza.  Omer Neutra was born in New York City in 2001. On Sept. 11, 2001, when terrorists struck America, “I was eight months pregnant,” his mother, Orna Neutra, said. “Crossing over the Queensboro Bridge [in New York], trying to get home from the city with Omer in my belly, just trying to get him out of harm’s way. And it’s just insane that 23 years later, he’s [a victim] in this vile terrorist attack.” Following high school, Omer took a gap year and participated in a leadership program in Israel. After spending a year there, Omer’s mother said, her son felt, as an Israeli citizen, that he needed to “do his share in protecting the homeland.”  He became a tank commander in the Israel Defense Forces and was serving close to Israel’s border with Gaza on Oct. 7. His tank was found empty shortly after the attack and he was presumed to be taken hostage.  Ronen and Orna Neutra spoke alongside Liz Naphtali, the great-aunt of U.S. citizen Abigail Edan, who celebrated her fourth birthday as a hostage in Gaza before being released in a hostage deal in November. Hamas terrorists murdered both of Abigail’s parents Oct. 7.  The tragic events that both families and so many in Israel experienced that day have made them family with the leaders of organizations such as Concerned Women for America, Naphtali said, as they work together for release of the hostages.  “We’re a family. And what we are is we’re a family that has come together,” Naphtali said, stressing that a deal is needed now to bring home “Omar and all of the hostages.”  The post Warning at RNC From Parents of American-Israeli Hostage: ‘Time Is Running Out’ appeared first on The Daily Signal.

Joy Reid: Biden With COVID ‘Exactly the Same’ as Trump Getting Shot

The election desperation was palpable during MSNBC’s coverage of Night Three of the Republican National Convention on Wednesday. With news just breaking that President Biden was diagnosed with COVID again, co-host Joy Reid tried to suggest that if Biden recovered from the cold quickly, it should be viewed as “exactly the same” as former President Trump surviving an assassination attempt where he was shot in the head. At first, Reid praised Biden’s diagnosis because it supposedly provided a remarkable political “opportunity” for the Biden campaign to blame Trump for killing people: And it’s also, a quite interesting opportunity for President Biden to also show being responsible. I assume he's going to put a mask on when he gets inside Air Force One and not spread COVID around. But also to remind people of what hell we went through with COVID because of Donald Trump. Here is a great messaging opportunity for President Biden to bring out the tape and remind people of how many people died; a million people are no longer with us. Peoples’ grandmas were dying alone with their iPad. A great opportunity and messaging opportunity should the white House choose to take it.     In reality, more people died from COVID under the Biden administration. Reid swerved into a conspiracy theory territory when she seemed to hint that the shooting was staged because of the so-called “photo-op” on stage. “Donald Trump is an elderly man who, for whatever reason, was given nine seconds to take a photo-op during an active shooter situation. Weird situation, we'll figure that out one day,” she speculated. She proceeded to whine that Trump’s “survival of that and bouncing right back and going right to his convention is being conveyed in the media world as a sign of strength.” That comment was followed up with her insane suggestion that Biden recovering from a bug 99 percent of people survived was somehow on par with surviving getting shot in the head with a bullet: This current president of the United States is 81 years old and has COVID, should he be fine in a couple of days, doesn't that convey exactly the same thing? That he’s strong enough – older than Trump – to have gotten something that used to really be fatal to people his age. So, if he does fine out of it and comes back and is able to do rallies, isn't that exactly the same? “It should,” former Biden flack Jen Psaki agreed. “It should.” The transcript is below. Peoples’ grandmas were dying alone with their iPad. A great opportunity and messaging opportunity should the white House choose to take it. (…) 6:29:19 p.m. Eastern REID: Here’s the question that I have on that. These two men are both elderly. Donald Trump is an elderly man who, for whatever reason, was given nine seconds to take a photo-op during an active shooter situation. Weird situation, we'll figure that out one day. But his survival of that and bouncing right back and going right to his convention is being conveyed in the media world as a sign of strength. So, if he does fine out of it and comes back and is able to do rallies, isn't that exactly the same? JEN PSAKI: It should. REID: I mean, it’s not exactly the same. It’s not the same incident but it's an elderly man coming through out of an illness. PSAKI: It should. (…)

CNN Analyst 'Worried' About VP Pick J.D. Vance ‘Eliminating DEI’

As the third night of the Republican National Convention began, critiques surrounding Senator and vice presidential nominee J.D. Vance (R-OH) before his formal convention speech were rising amongst many in the liberal media. It was apparent that with former President Donald Trump naming Vance as his running mate, Vance had become their next target. CNN Political Commentator and former communications director for VP Kamala Harris, Jamal Simmons, perfectly exemplified this as he critiqued the vice presidential pick for “eliminating DEI.” Hours before the up and coming Vance was set to speak, political commentators from CNN convened to either praise or air their grievances regarding the VP pick. Simmons took his time however to share his disappointment around the politician stating: I met him in 2016 and I was a fan because of the book and I thought, wow, as somebody who grew up in Michigan in a black community, that was very similar to the community he grew up in that was a white community. I felt like this was amazing. Here's somebody who's talking about the plight of the white working class, the struggling white working class, but he's not pointing fingers at the black people who live on the other side of town. He's not pointing fingers at the immigrants who are coming, everyone’s saying they are taking their jobs. He’s saying we've got to talk about what's happening inside this community and there’s space for everybody else.     With a classic shift, however, Simmons then critiqued Vance’s shift towards Trump emphasizing his disappointment: But the new JD Vance isn't somebody who's not pointing fingers. He’s somebody who has got the eliminating DEI act and he wants to get rid of diversity and inclusion in federal programming. With an outrageous take, the commentator began to praise DEI programs and just how successful they have been. “The reality is the reason why we have had so much progress on race and gender and inclusion it's because we've been trying to make progress.” As many organizations, such as Microsoft,  have dropped these Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion programs, as major failures, it is clear that, in reality, Vance has a better understanding of the issue than Simmons.  The transcript is below, click “expand” to read: CNN The Situation Room With Wolf Blitzer 7/17/2024 5:20:15 PM EST   JAMAL SIMMONS:  I think he’ll probably, he's going to tell the story of pulling himself up by his bootstraps. But the history, the recent history has been that he doesn't really believe that for everyone else. When I met him, I only met him once. I met him in 2016 and I was a fan because of the book and I thought, wow, as somebody who grew up in Michigan in a black community, that was very similar to the community he grew up in that was a white community. I felt like this was amazing. Here's somebody who's talking about the plight of the white working class, the struggling white working class, but he's not pointing fingers at the black people who live on the other side of town. He’s saying we've got to talk about what's happening inside this community and there’s space for everybody else. But the new JD Vance isn't somebody who's not pointing fingers. He’s somebody who has got the eliminating DEI act and he wants to get rid of diversity and inclusion in federal programming. And the reality is the reason why we have had so much progress on race and gender and inclusion it's because we've been trying to make progress. And when we stop trying to make progress, we're going to stop making progress. And that's what makes me worried about JD Vance. And you just can't trust what flip-flop is going to come out of him next, from where he was before.
