Michigan Democrat — arrested for allegedly sexting underage boy in sting operation — wins re-election in landslide

A Michigan Democrat won re-election in a landslide despite resigning from his office two months ago after he was arrested for allegedly sexting an underage boy.Ken Fletcher had been the supervisor in Delta Township, which is about 10 minutes west of Lansing. Fletcher resigned Sept. 3 — a day before he faced child sex crime charges.Law enforcement agents reportedly were 'posing as a 15-year-old male on the mobile dating app Grindr from Aug. 13 to Aug. 14' in order to talk to Fletcher. Township Manager Brian Reed said Fletcher resigned "effective immediately" during the township board meeting, and the board accepted his resignation. Reed added that the "township has also been made aware of an open criminal investigation unrelated to his duties as supervisor."In the recent election, Fletcher received nearly 89% of the vote. He was opposed by two write-in candidates — Saturn Wells, who received just over 11% of the vote, and Richard Ott who did not receive any votes. Fletcher was arrested Sept. 4 and charged with accosting a child for immoral purposes and using a computer to commit a crime; he pleaded not guilty to the two felonies and was released on bond.Fletcher, 58, was caught in a sting operation, according to police. He allegedly thought he was talking to a 15-year-old boy on Grindr — the self-proclaimed "world's largest social networking app for gay, bi, trans, and queer people" — when cops reportedly were posing a teen boy.WILX-TV obtained documents claiming Fletcher "engaged in an undercover chat with Detective Scheib with the Eaton County Sheriff’s Office." Law enforcement agents reportedly were "posing as a 15-year-old male on the mobile dating app Grindr from Aug. 13 to Aug. 14" in order to talk to Fletcher. The outlet noted that Fletcher "continued to send enticing messages and expressed that he was willing to meet the 15-year-old boy at the Lansing Mall for the purpose of 'just talking.'"Fletcher was kept on the ballot due to state election law.Fletcher can accept or decline the office until Jan. 1, 2025.The New York Post reported that Fletcher’s lawyer, Michael Nichols, said his client was “pleasantly surprised” by the election results. Nichols wondered to WILX, “The biggest question I think for Ken Fletcher is — is this the right thing for not just me but for the community? Am I still the best person for the job?” Delta Township Clerk Mary Clark — who has been serving as interim supervisor since Fletcher resigned — said, "There are three choices on his part, and so it’s really kind of presumptive of us to act or decide to act in a certain way before we know what is happening with that position."Clark added, “He can vacate the office if he does not get sworn in by then; he could get sworn in and resign, or obviously he could get sworn in and stay.”Fletcher is scheduled to return to court Nov. 12. Emoji reactions from Android users finally show up correctly on iPhones

Apple has taken yet another step in busting down barriers between green and blue bubbles. As spotted by The Verge this week, reactions (called Tapbacks on iOS) sent by Android devices to iPhones now appear on top of the message as intended. As The Verge notes, an Android user reacting to a message sent from an iOS device previously resulted in a separate message on a new line with the emoji used and the content of the original message. This led to cluttered conversations and was one common reason to avoid group texts with Android and iOS users. After all these years, it's no longer an issue. The Verge found out by happenstance, as neither Apple nor Google have announced anything. To test the change, the publication sent a series of text messages and emoji reactions between iPhones running iOS 18.1 and multiple Android phones. In either direction, the emoji reactions showed up as they should—in line with the original message. Apple began supporting Google's Rich Communication Services (RCS) standard in iOS 18, but the interoperability between Android and iOS was still inferior. For instance, an RCS message is still unencrypted, and green bubbles aren't going anywhere. That said, The Verge's discovery goes to show that Apple and Google aren't done improving the synergy between iPhones and Android devices. Apple most likely would have preferred to never support the standard at all, but now the EU and China have forced its hand, there's not much to gain in impeding communication between devices. One of the scariest malware threats is now targeting Windows gamers

Windows gamers are the latest target in the Winos4.0 campaign, according to a new threat analysis from security researchers at FortiGuard Labs. The report suggests that the malware is hiding within various gaming-related applications, such as speed boosters and optimization utilities. This particular malware is one that has been known for a while. It was built from the ashes of GhostRat, another malware framework designed to take over control of the target computers it infects. Much like GhostRat, Winos4.0 can take over your computer, giving the hacker full control of the system. It’s a very advanced malware framework with a lot of effective online endpoint controls that support a ton of different functions the threat actors can take advantage of. After you install the infected application, a fake bitmap image is downloaded from a server. The image extracts a dynamic link library that is loaded onto your system. This is then deployed deep into the target computer, giving control at a root system level. A successful installation of Winos4.0 gives the threat actors access to everything on your system. They can check for crypto wallet extensions and anti-virus extensions, gather and send encoded system information back to the control server, capture screenshots of your system, and even manage documents. If your system becomes infected with this particular malware, then you’re likely in for a world of hurt. This isn’t as simple as an Android malware that steals your money and wipes your accounts. No, this framework can take full control of your system and anything that it has access to. To avoid Winos4.0, be aware of where all your downloads are coming from, and check their sources before installing.
