The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) is facing pressure from Senate Republicans after a report revealed efforts to combat alleged misinformation. Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-MO) sent a letter to NSF Director Dr. Sethuraman Panchanathan on Friday requesting a “comprehensive list of projects funded by the NSF Convergence Accelerator Track F.” Through the program‚ the NSF has spent tens of millions of dollars to “combat mis- and disinformation‚” according to The Daily Caller News Foundation. “To say that NSF’s reported involvement in funding research projects aimed at developing AI tools for identifying and combating alleged misinformation is un-American would be an understatement‚” Schmitt wrote in the letter‚ obtained by The Daily Wire. “This seems to be yet another brazen attempt by your agency and the Biden Administration to collude with Big Tech to silence those who eschew the thoughts and ideals of the political Left.” Schmitt’s request follows a report on the NSF program by the House Judiciary Committee. “The purpose of these taxpayer-funded projects is to develop artificial intelligence (AI)- powered censorship and propaganda tools that can be used by governments and Big Tech to shape public opinion by restricting certain viewpoints or promoting others‚” the report said according to the DCNF. The NSF has dolled out sizeable grants to top U.S. universities to track and study online discourse for examples of misinformation and disinformation. Syracuse University received nearly $500‚000 to study how “misinformation becomes woven into narratives online‚ how technology influences this process‚ and how design might be used to alter it.” Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology received $750‚000 from the program. One of the researchers wrote in a project proposal summary to the NSF that “broad swaths of the public cannot effectively sort truth from fiction online.” CLICK HERE TO GET THE DAILYWIRE+ APP The NSF program has already been the target of subpoenas by Republicans in the House. “The Biden Administration has shown a stunning disregard for Americans’ freedom of speech online and has gone as far as to coerce social media companies to censor Americans online‚” Schmitt told The Daily Wire in a statement. “With the rapid rise of artificial intelligence in the public and commercial sector‚ we have a duty to ensure AI is used responsibly and not weaponized against Americans’ constitutional rights.”

Judge Arthur Engoron ruled on Thursday to formalize the punishments handed down to former President Donald Trump in his New York civil fraud case after Trump attempted to delay enforcement of the penalties by 30 days.  Trump‚ who was fined $354 million and banned from doing business in New York for three years‚ had hoped to propose a counter-judgement to the one that was proposed by New York Attorney General Letitia James. Engoron disagreed and said that Trump’s lawyers had not justified the need for a stay.  “You have failed to explain‚ much less justify‚ any basis for a stay‚” Engoron said. “I am confident that the Appellate Division will protect your appellate rights.” On Wednesday‚ Trump lawyer Clifford Robert had told Engoron that not allowing Trump’s team to submit a counter-judgement “would be contrary to fundamental fairness and due process.” In another letter to Engoron‚ Robert said that James was rushing the process in a way that violated normal procedure for such cases.  “The Court’s direction that it sees ‘no need for a motion or conference‚’ because the proposed Judgment ‘exactly tracks the’ February 16 Decision‚ ignores the fact that the proposed Judgment expressly states that a motion has been made‚ which is simply wrong. The Attorney General has not filed any motion on notice‚ nor moved to settle the proposed Judgment; her unseemly rush to memorialize a ‘judgment’ violates all accepted practice in New York state court‚” he wrote.  Throughout the case‚ Trump‚ who plans on appealing the decision‚ has said that the prosecution and judge were both politically motivated to harm him as he mounts another presidential campaign. Critics have raised concerns over Engoron‚ who has exclusively donated to Democratic candidates over the past 25 years‚ as well as James‚ who campaigned on going after Trump.  CLICK HERE TO GET THE DAILYWIRE+ APP James also recently threatened to seize Trump’s New York properties if he can’t come up with the money to pay the civil fraud fine.  “If he does not have funds to pay off the judgment‚ then we will seek judgment enforcement mechanisms in court‚ and we will ask the judge to seize his assets‚” James told ABC News. “We are prepared to make sure that the judgment is paid to New Yorkers‚ and yes‚ I look at 40 Wall Street each and every day.” James was referring to the Trump Building‚ a 72-story building with 1.3 square million feet of office space on Wall Street right by the New York Stock Exchange.

Actor Sam Waterston is leaving “Law &; Order” after 30 years and more than 400 episodes depicting District Attorney Jack McCoy. The 83-year-old star told “Today” that he’s not broken up about laying the character to rest‚ saying he knew this day would come. “I knew I was going to leave when I came back‚ and it was just a matter of when‚” Waterston told the outlet‚ referring his full-time 2022 return to the series after appearing sporadically in prior years. “This was a beautiful way to go‚ I have to say‚” he continued. “When they say goodbye to me‚ the last shot that I did was on the set of the courtroom‚ and [series creator] Dick Wolf showed up‚ and everybody gave speeches‚ and I quoted from Abraham Lincoln going to D.C. at the beginning of the Civil War. And he had been there for 25 years. If 25 years doesn’t matter‚ nothing matters.” Waterston originally played Jack McCoy on “Law &; Order” from 1994 to 2010‚ before returning in 2022. He received three Emmy Award nominations in 1997‚ 1999 and 2000 plus a Golden Globe nomination in 1995. Showrunners announced that as Waterston leaves‚ “Scandal” actor Tony Goldwyn will join the cast. Waterston said he’s excited about the update.  “I think he’s going to be great. You know‚ my reputation is in terrible danger‚ because I think he’s just going to be wonderful and I’ll be watching. But I think… it’s going to be big trouble. It’ll be what the DA is: demanding‚” Waterston said. “A lot of fun to watch.” The “Law &; Order” mainstay said he’s actually looking forward to having more free time. But at the same time‚ he told “Today” there’s “not a chance” he’s fully retiring from acting. He further said he’s “not worrying about it” and that his wife and manager will find his next role. If we like it — free bagel chips on us!” How many customers would like to show off their dance moves to earn free bagel chips? The folks at Bagels and Schmear were about to find out!
