Within Temptation

“We consider ourselves more an atmospheric melodic symphonic Metal/Rock band‚” stated Within Temptation frontwoman Sharon den Adel.  “In my opinion‚ we are not a gothic band but we have gothic elements.” Within Temptation formed in South Holland‚ Netherlands. A year later‚ in 1997‚ they released their debut album “Enter‚” which established the band in the Dutch market. Evanescence’s growing popularity piqued international and especially American interest in symphonic Goth Rock bands like Within Temptation. It also drove the band’s success on the Dutch charts. Within Temptation’s fourth album‚ “The Heart of Everything‚” was their first to land on the Billboard 200 (#106).  Four years later‚ “The Unforgiving‚” a concept album‚ did even better rising to #50 on the Billboard survey as band ventured beyond Symphonic Metal.  Songs were co-written by den Adel and founding guitarist Robert Westerholt with producer Daniel Gibson contributing to half the tracks. By the time “Hydra” was released in ’14‚ Within Temptation moved from the Roadrunner imprint to Nuclear Blast. That and the addition of guest performers – former Nightwish vocalist Tarja Turunen (“Paradise (What About Us?)” and Soul Asylum’s Dave Pirner (“Whole World Is Watching“) – took the album to #16 on the Billboard chart. Also‚ keyboardist Martin Spierenburg co-wrote four songs for the album with den Adel‚ including “Paradise (What About Us?”). By ‘16‚ the band had sold more than 3.5 million albums worldwide. Their popularity in the Netherlands was solid with albums landing at #1 or #2 on the Dutch charts. Much of Western Europe was falling in line placing Within Temptation albums in the Top 10 (only France and Austria‚ for some reason‚ were less enthused). In addition‚ the band had a steadily increasing U.S. presence. “Resist” dropped five years after “Hydra.” While “Resist” did well in Europe‚ the set generated only half the U.S sales of “Hydra.”  As a result‚ the album only went to #129.  A new approach was in order. Within Temptation released their eighth studio album‚ “Bleed Out” in ’23. Earlier‚ den Adel discussed the band’s decision to shift its focus from releasing albums to issuing a series of singles. “Since we started doing only singles‚ it takes so much more time‚ so much more effort‚ because every single is a single. It’s not just a random song on the album.”  Singles included “Bleed Out.” The track‚ which was first performed at Hellfest in France‚ addressed the plight of women fighting for their rights in Iran. “I lived in Yemen when I was a kid‚” den Adel shared. “Due to my time there‚ I feel connected to that part of the world. I’ve been so incredibly impressed by the bravery of the young women there who’ve been burning their scarves knowing they were going to be thrown in prison or worse. It’s heartbreaking.” Another single was “Ritual.” “It’s a fun track about seduction‚” den Adel explained. “It’s about the lady taking power in a male dominated world and taking her own initiative.” She added‚ “(It) is one of the kinkiest songs the band have ever written.”  The other featured tracks were “Entertain You‚” “The Purge‚” “Shed My Skin“ and “Don’t Pray For Me.” The post Within Temptation appeared first on RockinTown.

‘Take It Down and They’ll Return’: The Stunning Revival of the Penobscot River

About a week before the removal of the Great Works Dam on the Penobscot River in Old Town‚ Maine‚ Dan Kusnierz dragged his sons to the riverside to take their picture in front of the aging structure. They had just come from a little league game. “They were being goofy and didn’t understand it‚” Kusnierz‚ the water resources program manager for the Penobscot Indian Nation‚ recalls. It was 2012‚ and with the dam’s removal imminent‚ the river — New England’s second-largest — was about to transform.  For nearly two centuries‚ the Penobscot had been choked with logs and pulp as the timber and paper industries — both long-standing cornerstones of Maine’s economy — used it both as a lumber byway and waste receptacle. From just 1830 to 1880‚ more than eight billion feet of timber floated down the river. To power all this industry‚ dams were erected‚ 119 in the Penobscot River Basin alone. Two in particular‚ the Great Works and the Veazie‚ posed an outsized threat to the river’s health.  A stereograph from the 1870s shows the view from Ripogenus Falls on the Penobscot River. Credit: A.L. Hinds / Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Division of Art‚ Prints and Photographs‚ New York Public Library Perhaps irrelevant to his children posing for a picture at the time‚ Kusnierz‚ who is not Penobscot but has served the Nation for 20 years‚ was one the members of an unprecedented coalition of scientists‚ Indigenous people and conservationists working to remove both dams in order to free the Penobscot River and hopefully restore its health in the process. The river had been sick for generations. Butch Phillips‚ a Penobscot Nation elder‚ recalls growing up on Indian Island‚ the Penobscot tribe reservation located near Old Town on the river‚ in the 1950s. By that time‚ the Penobscot was unrecognizable to the body of water it had once been‚ with drifting logs so gridlocked at times on the eastern side of the island that the river was impassable for boats and people alike. This posed an ongoing dilemma for the Penobscot people who‚ prior to the construction of a bridge in 1950‚ used canoes to travel to and from the mainland.  The Veazie Dam before removal. Credit: Joshua Royte / The Nature Conservancy Despite the discharge coming from the mills‚ the river was still central to the Penobscot Nation’s everyday life. “[The river] was our playground‚” Phillips says. “We were either canoeing on it‚ fishing‚ swimming in it and in the wintertime we were skating on it.” But the relationship had been affected. Living so closely with a body of water like the Penobscot for so many generations‚ he explained‚ “you develop a river culture. We are river people‚ we’re canoe people. And when you take away that element‚ that river and the use of the river‚ then you take away the culture as well.” One of the worst blows to the river‚ though‚ was to its 12 species of sea-run fish. The Great Works‚ Veazie and Howland dams‚ all built in the 19th century‚ severed access to the river’s headwaters‚ which fish like alewives and shad‚ shortnose sturgeon and Atlantic salmon used as spawning ground. When the dams were erected‚ the effects on the fish population were almost immediate: By the 1850s‚ salmon no longer inhabited most of the rivers in southern Maine and their populations continued to decline so dramatically that in 1889‚ the US government opened the Craigbrook National Fish Hatchery in Orland‚ Maine to support the besieged fish. For the next 50 years‚ it was the primary source of salmon eggs for the region.

Unguided‚ Ungrounded‚ Unappreciated‚ Uninspired: How Trail Life USA Aims to Solve the ‘Boy Crisis’

Trail Life USA isn’t just a Christian alternative to the Boy Scouts; it’s an answer to the deep crisis affecting boys in America. “We’re growing boys into godly men‚” Mark Hancock‚ the scouting organization’s CEO‚ tells “The Daily Signal Podcast.” “We’ve discovered a proven process for turning boys into godly men‚ and it involves four things.” Hancock‚ today’s guest on the podcast‚ diagnoses four major problems American boys face: They are unguided‚ ungrounded‚ unappreciated‚ and uninspired. “One in four boys now doesn’t have a father in his household‚” Hancock says. “They go to school‚ 76% of teachers are female. Eighty-something percent of Sunday school teachers are female. So‚ these girls have wonderful models of leadership. Boys don’t have that‚ so we are guiding boys. We think that’s important.” Trail Life USA requires leaders to be confessing Christians‚ but it welcomes boys of any or no faith tradition. Hancock also laments that boys are ungrounded‚ noting that “58% of Americans no longer believe that God is a source of moral truth.” His organization aims to “ground them in biblical truths‚” through its six essentials of a Christian worldview. “We also know that boys are unappreciated‚” the CEO adds. He says the culture’s “gender blurring” sends the message that “it’s like a boy is some sort of a defective girl.” Boys are twice as likely to be in special education programs and three times as likely to be diagnosed with ADHD‚ he notes. “They’ve fallen behind girls in every single academic category. One category they are leading in is the suicide rate—10- to 14-year-old boys have the fastest-growing rate.” “If you looked at any other demographic that was going through what boys are going through right now‚ I mean‚ we’d be picketing in the streets‚” Hancock says‚ “because somebody’s got to do something about this—and Trail Life is doing something about it.” He also laments that “boys are largely uninspired in a culture that it’s participation trophies or ‘let’s not keep score because we’re going to hurt somebody’s feelings.'” “That’s horrible for boys‚” Hancock says. “They want to be challenged. They want something put in front of them that’s bigger than they are. They want to identify with something that’s doing big things. And so‚ in Trail Life USA‚ we’ve given them this robust awards program and we challenge them outside of their comfort zone to go beyond what it is that they thought that they could do in a company of men.” The CEO says Trail Life USA has a “proven process” and he offers his church partners a money-back guarantee. Hancock recalls a moment when a boy in California who had been raised by a single mom stood in front of a troop of men after receiving the Horizon Award‚ the organization’s second-highest award. “He stood in front of that group of men‚ single mom sitting there in the audience‚ and he said‚ ‘The men in this troop‚ I have to thank you. You taught me how to shave and you taught me how to love Jesus.’ I thought‚ ‘They nailed it. They nailed it‚'” Hancock recalls. The head of Trail Life USA also laments the decline of the Boy Scouts‚ calling it “tragic.” “An organization that gave us presidents‚ and astronauts‚ and civic leaders‚ and generals‚ and tons of great men over the years‚ suddenly decided that it was going to abandon some of its traditional values and the way that that secret sauce that they had for building good‚ strong men‚” he says. In 2013‚ after the Boy Scouts decided to admit openly gay scouts‚ Hancock gathered 50 men in Louisville‚ Kentucky‚ to create a new organization that launched Jan. 1‚ 2014. “Now‚ Trail Life has grown to over 50‚000 members in all 50 states‚” Hancock recounts. “We’re in 1‚200 churches now‚ 1‚200 troops across the country. Boys from 5 years old all the way up to 17 years old [are] participating in Trail Life USA.” Trail Life USA has many of the same features of scouting—uniforms‚ handbooks‚ patrols‚ outdoor adventure—but it is Christ-centered and boy-focused. “I hope this isn’t too radical for your listeners; We believe that boys and girls are different‚” Hancock quips.
