The armed forces recruit in Arabic

DOMESTIC. The armed forces are advertising on the Arabic-language news site Alkompis in a new attempt to increase the proportion of non-Swedes in the organization, writes Nya Dagbladet.

"What we do today, we do for the sake of the future. We grow and develop and change in the shadow of the world's deteriorating situation," it says in Arabic in the authority's advertisement, according to Josefine Utas, an opinion leader and former activist in the Green Party and Medborgerlig Samling, who draws attention to the Armed Forces' Arabic advertising.

"Is it reasonable that our armed forces communicate in a language foreign to Swedes?", asks Utas in a post.

Alkompis was founded by Mahmoud Agha, formerly employed at Sveriges Radio's Arabic editorial office. Large companies, authorities and municipalities like to advertise on Alkompis.

However, it is unclear whether the Swedish Armed Forces intended that Arabs who do not know Swedish should be able to get a job at the agency or whether the advertisement is primarily intended to profile the agency in political terms.

"The purpose of the campaign is to increase the legitimacy of the Armed Forces," writes the Armed Forces in an email to Nyheter Idag.
