After a calmer pace during the pandemic, the Center for Sexual Health in Malmö sees a clear post-pandemic effect with increased pressure on reception.

A dramatic increase in sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea and syphilis in combination with a high demand for the reception's HIV prevention treatment has made the situation strained at the Center for Sexual Health during the summer. To cope with the influx, more resources are now required.

According to Maria Pilåker, unit manager at the Center for Sexual Health in Malmö, the situation is extraordinary.

- In all the years I have worked with this, I have never experienced anything like this, she says. In the early 00's we had a few gonorrhea cases a year - now we see lots per week, she says to Sydsvenskan .

The pressure means that the staff no longer has time for everything.

- We never deny anyone with symptoms, but there will be longer waiting times, says Maria Pilåker.

Six-month waiting period
According to Region Skåne, the waiting time to start PrEP treatment is currently between four and six months.

- We thought that PrEP would be in demand by maybe 100 people, but now we are instead up to 600 who have started the PrEP program, says Maria Pilåker.
