DOMESTIC. The police are investigating several car scams where cars have changed hands without the seller having been paid. In the past week, five cars have been prevented from being resold by tracking criminals' car ownership.

Car owners who have wanted to sell their cars via the advertising site Blocket have been contacted by seemingly serious, trustworthy and eloquent people - both men and women - who have said they are interested in buying the car. The cars that have been in question are family cars worth a couple of hundred thousand kroner.

After the person has looked at the car and test driven it, they have told the seller that they want to buy it. The price has been agreed upon and the buyer says he will make a bank transfer to the seller's bank account.

The bank transfer shown at a quick glance looks to be completely in order and the seller is satisfied that the money is on its way to the account. Seller and buyer fill in the change of ownership papers and keys and car are handed over to the new owner who leaves. The seller, who thinks everything is fine, doesn't know that the buyer has no money in his bank account and never intended to pay for the car.

The bank transfer shown has been given a transfer date a few days ahead and then withdrawn by the scammer.

A few days pass and the seller still hasn't been paid for the car. He contacts the buyer who says that there seems to be a problem with the bank, that "the transfer was unusually large and needs manual handover". "We have different banks and there was a weekend in between" or similar excuses occur.

The seller waits a few more days. During these days, the change of ownership has gone through and the buyer is now the owner of the car and has had a new registration certificate sent home. The new owner approaches a car company to sell the car. The new owner shows the registration certificate showing that he or she is the owner of the car. Since the original owner has not realized that he has been the victim of a fraud, the car has not been reported stolen and is therefore not wanted. The car dealer buys the car, which now has another new owner, and the car company pays out money to the fraudster.

The fraudster now needs to get rid of the money quickly before the crime is discovered. Money is transferred to other accounts, foreign currency and cryptocurrency purchases are made, expensive technology gadgets are purchased and cash withdrawals are made.

In April, a 25-year-old woman was sentenced in the Norrköping district court for, among other things, one case of gross fraud and two cases of fraud of the normal degree. She was convicted of being the one who had conned three cars by presenting reversed bank transfers. The woman has not been convicted of a similar crime before and the penalty for her was probation and damages.

According to the police, it cannot be ruled out that several people are involved in the fraud and that they have taken part in the proceeds of crime, but it has not been possible to prove it during the police investigation.

The district court has also taken a position on who has the best right to the cars, the original owner or the car dealer, and there the outcomes have been different depending on the circumstances. Several of the affected individuals have not received their cars back.
