The United Kingdom issued guidance on the use of artificial intelligence that takes society’s reliance on AI to a whole new dystopian level. The British Courts and Tribunals Judiciary announced on Dec. 12  that court officials are now allowed to use AI in legal rulings despite AI companies’ admissions that their chatbots are flawed and should not be relied upon by users. Strikingly‚ the Judiciary went on to say that it hopes the legal field uses advancements in AI technology in the future. “The use of Artificial Intelligence (‘AI’) throughout society continues to increase‚ and so does its relevance to the court and tribunal system‚” the Judiciary said in an official statement. “The guidance is the first step in a proposed suite of future work to support the judiciary in their interactions with AI.” While the Judiciary acknowledged that AI responses “may be inaccurate‚ incomplete‚ misleading‚ or biased‚” the guidance manual posted on the judiciary’s website appeared to encourage legal professionals to use the tools as long as they independently verify the information put before the court. “All legal representatives are responsible for the material they put before the court/tribunal and have a professional obligation to ensure it is accurate and appropriate‚” read the AI Guidance document. “… Until the legal profession becomes familiar with these new technologies‚ however‚ it may be necessary at times to remind individual lawyers of their obligations and confirm that they have independently verified the accuracy of any research or case citations that have been generated with the assistance of an AI chatbot.” Of concern‚ many AI tech firms have repeatedly warned that their products are not reliable or trustworthy. Google's Bard disclaimer contains the following warning about the technology's trustworthiness. "Generative AI and all of its possibilities are exciting‚ but it’s still new‚” Google warns. “Bard is an experiment‚ and it will make mistakes. Even though it’s getting better every day‚ Bard can provide inaccurate information‚ or it can even make offensive statements." ChatGPT has a similar disclaimer warning that answers provided in the chatbot could be just plain wrong "ChatGPT is not connected to the internet‚ and it can occasionally produce incorrect answers‚” declared OpenAI‚ the parent company of ChatGPT. “It has limited knowledge of world and events after 2021 and may also occasionally produce harmful instructions or biased content." Starting with the pro-Hamas questions‚ Patsy Widakuswara with taxpayer-funded Voice of America (VOA) had this insane question on Thursday courtesy of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) (whose head praised Hamas’s October 7 barbarity): “CAIR has called on the Biden administration to respond to reports that the Israeli military has shot women‚ children‚ and babies‚ in‚ ‘execution style’ after they sought refuge in a school in Gaza.  Is there any truth to those claims?” Reporter from taxpayer-funded Voice of America (VOA) touts CAIR -- who's head said he was "happy to see" Hamas terrorists committing mass slaughter of Jews -- as claiming Israeli Defense Forces are executing Gazan women and children pic.twitter.com/WDDS7UDfqz — Curtis Houck (@CurtisHouck) December 14‚ 2023 Thankfully‚ Kirby wanted nothing to do with this‚ saying he couldn’t “verify those accusations.” Nadia Bilbassy-Charters of Saudi-funded Alarabyia kept to her shtick‚ lecturing Kirby about how he “seem[s] to give the Israelis more of a benefit of the doubt that your — than your own President” despite “civilian casualties…mounting. “ Kirby thoroughly demolished this‚ noting Israel “moved in — into Northern Gaza on the ground in a way that was much smaller than they had previously planned to do”‚ “reduced the number of airstrikes”‚ and “published online maps of places where people can go or not to go‚” which is “basically telegraphing your punches‚ and there’s very few modern militaries in the world that would do that‚” including the U.S. Also in the left-wing category‚ there was this Wednesday softball to Jean-Pierre from a McClatchy reporter: “Does the White House have a plan to address what is likely going to be a wave of legislation in the statehouses next year restricting LGBTQ rights and gender-affirming care? For example‚ there’s already more than 20 of these kind of bills in Missouri.” On Wednesday‚ there were a number of questions about the pending impeachment inquiry vote against President Biden and Hunter Biden’s public remarks outside the Capitol that defied a congressional subpoena. A few minutes after Jean-Pierre said “the President was…familiar with what his son was going to say‚” in response to a question from CBS’s Ed O’Keefe about whether he watched Hunter’s statement‚ ABC’s MaryAlice Parks and the Daily Mail’s Rob Crilly had some biting follow ups. This included Crilly pointing out Joe Biden himself said in 2021 those who defy subpoenas should face consequences (click “expand”): PARKS: Is the President okay with his son defying a congressional subpoena? JEAN-PIERRE: I’m just not going to get into — into specifics on that. I would have to re- — would have to refer you to the President’s — not the President‚ but Hunter’s personal — personal representatives. He is a private citizen‚ so I’m just not going to get into it. PARKS: Can you tell us when the last time the two of them spoke? JEAN-PIERRE: I mean‚ I’m also not going to get into private conversation that the President has with his family. We’ve been pretty consistent. That’s nothing new. We’re just not going to get into it from here. PARKS: Republicans say that they have to take this vote formalizing an impeachment inquiry because the White House is stonewalling them. What’s your response to that? (….) CRILLY: You just said the President was familiar with what his son was going to say today. Was the President involved in drafting it‚ discussing it? Did he offer advice? Shifting to Thursday‚ Doocy Time was with Kirby as the Fox correspondent wondered “why would somebody around here leak that the Vice President is upset with the President about Gaza”. DOOCY TIME: "Why did somebody around here leak that the Vice President is upset with the President about Gaza?" Kirby: "Pfff. As polls show Joe Biden’s re-election is in peril because of the public’s negative opinion of how he’s handled the economy‚ TV viewers woke up Friday morning to a round of happy talk telling them that‚ despite what they might think‚ the economy is really quite spectacular. “The economy is in solid shape. Job growth is steady and inflation is cooling‚” ABC’s Elizabeth Schulze exclaimed on Good Morning America. Over on Today‚ NBC’s Tom Costello cheered that travel will be cheaper this Christmas: “Gas prices now below $3 a gallon in more than 20 states‚ so if you are planning to hit the road for the holidays‚ you’ll have company.” Earlier this week‚ NBC’s Christine Romans declared that Americans who told pollsters that the economy is bad are just wrong. “So people say the economy‚ you know‚ sucks‚” Romans argued on Wednesday’s Today. “But it really — it doesn’t....I call it the sourpuss economy....You know‚ people just don’t believe it.” A new Wall Street Journal poll last week found voters flocking to Donald Trump due to their deep dissatisfaction with Biden’s handling of the economy. As the Journal’s Aaron Zitner and Alex Leary summarized: Only 23% of voters say Biden’s policies have helped them personally‚ while 53% say they have been hurt by the president’s agenda.... “Bidenomics‚” the president’s signature economic platform‚ is viewed favorably by less than 30% of voters and unfavorably by more than half....Two-thirds of voters rate the economy as poor or not good‚ and two-thirds say the economy has gotten worse in the past two years‚ during Biden’s time in office. And as reported by the New York Post just yesterday‚ former Obama strategist David Axelrod called the recent polling “very‚ very dark” news for Biden’s re-election prospects. So this morning‚ ABC wanted to make sure viewers knew that the Dow Jones Industrial Average hit a record high yesterday‚ that the average 401(k) balance had increased by almost $13‚000 in 2023‚ and that the monthly mortgage cost associated with a new home was down $230 dollars vs. two months ago. Of course‚ overall housing prices are up a shocking 20 percent since Biden took office‚ according to Redfin. Inflation has driven up household expenses by more than $700 a month since 2012‚ and last year’s massive stock market decline deducted more than $26‚000 from the typical 401(k)‚ so even after this year’s increase‚ the average worker is still way behind. And NBC’s celebration that gas prices are below $3/gallon in more than 20 states (which means they're above $3/gallon in most states) ignores the fact that gas prices were significantly cheaper (a national average of $2.379/gallon) when Biden took office on January 20‚ 2021. But Biden’s re-election campaign is in trouble‚ so expect his friends in the media will likely keep zeroing in on positive economic anecdotes to help shore up his position as we head into 2024. The White House may have accidentally given House Republicans another avenue of investigation in the formal impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden.On Wednesday‚ Hunter Biden defied a congressional subpoena‚ opening himself up to additional criminal prosecution. When asked about the first son's decision‚ White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters that President Biden "was certainly familiar with what his son was going to say." The comment suggests that Biden knew his son would defy Congress because they had discussed it beforehand.If that is true‚ it is "a breathtaking mistake‚" according to legal scholar Jonathan Turley‚ because it implies that Biden obstructed Congress' investigation."One of the four most obvious potential articles of impeachment that I laid out in my prior testimony was obstruction‚" Turley explained in a new essay. "There already are questions over special treatment potentially being given to Hunter in the form of alleged felonies being allowed to expire‚ warnings about planned federal raids‚ and sweetheart deals‚" he continued. "In addition‚ President Biden has enlisted White House staff to actively push challenged accounts of his conduct and attack the House Republicans' investigative process."If this latest allegation is true‚ the president was speaking with his son about committing a potentially criminal act of contempt‚" Turley explained. A Virginia teacher fired for refusing to use a student's so-called preferred pronouns had his lawsuit against the school board revived by the Virginia Supreme Court Thursday in a landmark victory for religious freedom.Peter Vlaming was a high school French teacher at West Point Schools when he was terminated for refraining from using pronouns that denied a student's biological sex‚ which he argued would violate his religious beliefs‚ Blaze News previously reported. Instead‚ when referring to the female student‚ who claimed to identify as male‚ Vlaming carefully avoided using any pronouns.The teacher agreed to call the student by a preferred name and even encouraged all students in his class to select a new French name for the duration of the course so that the trans-identifying student would not feel singled out.Unsatisfied with Vlaming's work-around‚ the West Point School Board ordered him to use the student's preferred pronouns. When the educator refused‚ the student lodged a complaint against him.School administrators accused Vlaming of violating harassment and nondiscrimination policies. In a 5-0 vote‚ the school board ended his employment in 2018."Mr. Vlaming was recommended for termination due to his insubordination and repeated refusal to comply with directives made to him by multiple WPPS administrators. That discrimination then leads to creating a hostile learning environment. And the student had expressed that. The parent had expressed that. They felt disrespected‚" West Point Schools Superintendent Laura Abel stated.In 2019‚ Vlaming filed a lawsuit against the school board‚ but the Virginia Circuit Court dismissed the case. The Virginia Supreme Court decided Thursday to reverse the lower court's ruling‚ reviving Vlaming's case."The issue here is not whether the School Board's policies forbidding discrimination and harassment of students applied (as the School Board asserts) or did not apply (as Vlaming asserts) to the compelled-speech situation alleged in the complaint. The issue is whether Vlaming's sincerely held religious beliefs caused him to commit overt acts that 'invariably posed some substantial threat to public safety‚ peace or order‚'" the court's ruling contended‚ "and if so‚ whether the government's compelling state interest in protecting the public from that threat‚ when examined under the rigors of strict scrutiny‚ could be satisfied by 'less restrictive means.'"When religious liberty merges with free-speech protections‚ as it does in this case‚ mere 'objectionable' and 'hurtful' religious speech or‚ as in this case‚ nonspeech‚ is not enough to meet this standard‚" the ruling continued. German and Dutch officials captured four Hamas terrorists believed to have been plotting an attack on European soil. The men arrested Thursday are said to have been specifically targeting "Jewish institutions in Europe." While these arrests coincided with Denmark's apprehension of another four suspected terrorists‚ Danish authorities told CNN there is "no direct connection." The federal public prosecutor's office in Berlin indicated that two of the suspects captured in Germany‚ Abdelhamid Al A. and Ibrahim El-R.‚ are from Lebanon. Mohamed B.‚ an Egyptian national‚ was also caught in Berlin. Nazih R.‚ supposedly a Dutch national‚ was the lone Hamas member captured by Dutch police in Rotterdam. Prosecutors indicated the four men "have been long-standing members of HAMAS and have participated in HAMAS operations abroad. They are closely linked to the military branch's leadership. This included Khalil Hamed Al Kharraz‚ the second in command at the 'Izz al-Din al-Qassem' Brigades." Kharraz‚ also known as Abu Klaled‚ was successfully eliminated by an Israeli airstrike in southern Lebanon late last month along with three other terrorists. Hezbollah-aligned Lebanese media indicated Kharraz assisted with the Oct. 7 terror attacks on Israel‚ "leaving behind a legacy for the Resistance." German officials noted that Abdelhamid‚ taking orders from terrorists in Lebanon‚ began searching for an underground weapons depot in Europe earlier this year. In October‚ Abdelhamid‚ joined by Mohamed and Nazih‚ made multiple trips to and from Berlin in search of the weapons with Ibrahim "providing assistance." The weapons they were tasked with collecting were "to be taken to Berlin and kept in a state of readiness in view of potential terrorist attacks against Jewish institutions in Europe." The American Mind recently published what I think may be the most concise and incisive explanation of the challenge of modern motherhood that I’ve ever read. In “The Mother’s Gauntlet‚” author Lane Scott wrote: Total freedom is in some ways the source of the dissatisfaction. The lack of supervisors and peers‚ the absence of enforced schedules‚ and the loss of systems and productivity boosters which all working Americans enjoy makes job performance a little problematic‚ to say the least. Most of the time‚ no one is watching. No one is cheering. No one is there to keep you honest; and worst of all‚ no one is there to tell you what ought to be done now vs. later that day vs. next week vs. never. What this means is that there is no system to prevent you from slipping into your worst habits day in‚ day out. And your habits are the crux of the issue. Life at home with small children requires self-governance … If we are going to ask women to stay home and raise children‚ if we are going to tell them to pull their kids from schools and homeschool them‚ we should know what it is that we are asking. The stay-at-home mom cannot escape into a system and hide from her own ungovernability. Not only will she tell on herself‚ but her children‚ her life’s greatest work‚ will eventually tell on her‚ too. It is a monumental task‚ calling forth resolution and self-possession on a scale that most of us have never practiced. For that very reason‚ it is ennobling. But it is also a severe and demanding road bereft of honors and outside encouragement. Our advertisements for homemaking should include that fact—this is a spiritual battle‚ not a cakewalk. Expectations need to be set at that level. In the ongoing mommy wars‚ some social conservatives seem to have taken up a new position on the woman question: Women should leave their careers and return to their homes‚ which are havens in a heartless world‚ the management of which is easier than formal paying work. A common refrain: Why slave away in your cubicle when you could cuddle your baby all day long? “Girlbosses‚” according to this particular memeplex‚ only choose to work outside the home because of brainwashing and outsized vanity. The implicit leisure of domestic life is more logically appealing‚ but logic isn’t in women’s wheelhouse anyway. Scott’s position radically diverges‚ not in the conclusion that it is good for women to be home‚ but in its justification. Homes are built‚ she insists. The “haven‚” if it is to exist‚ must be carefully‚ systematically crafted and routinely re-examined. Good homes are vectors and mirrors of civilization. This implies a certain process of refinement‚ of cultural carpentry in homemaking. It implies that the stuff of the home begins as chaos and is brought into order through certain processes. But someone must enact those processes. Put simply: Peace and order begin with the homemaker. Homemaking‚ Scott admits‚ isn’t easier than formal remunerative work. In many ways‚ it’s more difficult. Rather than a matter of mindless luxury‚ it is an opportunity to master self-government and to participate in something of great consequence. This is a sometimes harsh reality that many women‚ often women who were very successful in their professional lives‚ face if they do take the leap and choose to raise children full-time. The skills aren’t precisely transferrable; negotiating with a toddler is nothing like negotiating a contract. On top of that‚ you’re the janitor and cook now‚ too. But if homemaking is the kind of civilizing force that Scott describes (for all members of the family‚ especially the mother)‚ then it has deep political implications‚ too. How many of the criminals terrorizing American streets were raised with any intention at all‚ let alone by mothers who loved them and regarded their role in their lives such as to make them both self-governing and governable? As conservatives (aside from Scott) struggle to articulate the reality of women’s lives‚ liberal feminists will acknowledge the difficulty of stay-at-home moms‚ but only in service of the prefabricated conclusion that responsibility that involves (particularly feminine) difficulty should be avoided. The present dynamic is a tragedy. Liberals continue winning the culture wars. The conservative attitude has room to shift more in the direction of Scott’s — acknowledging the difficulty and dignity of the vocation of motherhood while still offering no quarter for self-indulgent complaining. Imagine a cultural movement that‚ instead of diminishing the role of a homemaker‚ either by right-wing neglect or left-wing manipulation‚ publicly recognized motherhood as a sacrificial service to one’s country. It wouldn’t be the first time in history‚ nor would it be unique among contemporaries. If we are seriously concerned about the future of a country with dismal birth rates‚ we can afford to reconsider the current methods anyway.
