Data shows that winds of political change are blowing among Black voters. In volatile times like now‚ predictions can be made with only the greatest caution. However‚ it seems clear that something is going on and Black voters are breaking with past voting patterns. The New York Times reported last November that‚ per its polling with Siena College‚ 22% of Black voters in six key battleground states -- Arizona‚ Georgia‚ Michigan‚ Nevada‚ Pennsylvania and Wisconsin -- indicated they would support Republican Donald Trump. In 2020‚ Trump gained ground with Blacks‚ picking up 12% of the Black vote‚ up from 8% in 2016. But any suggestion that any Republican candidate might pick up 20-plus percent of the Black vote is revolutionary. The last time the Black vote went beyond the teens for a Republican was in 1960‚ when Richard Nixon got 32% of the Black vote‚ in a close election he lost to John Kennedy. The next election in 1964 was‚ for Blacks‚ about the Civil Rights Movement. The Republican candidate‚ Barry Goldwater‚ opposed passage of the Civil Rights Act and got 4% of the Black vote. Republicans have not recovered since. Nixon returned and won the presidency in 1968 and 1972. However‚ Blacks supported him at a fraction of what he received in 1960 -- Nixon getting 10% of the Black vote in 1968 and 13% in 1972. In a USA Today/Suffolk University Poll reported in January‚ only 63% of Black voters indicated support for President Joe Biden‚ compared to 87% who voted for him in 2020. The USA Today/Suffolk University poll shows a less compelling picture of Blacks moving toward Trump. That poll shows 12% support for Trump‚ exactly where he was in 2020. However‚ the poll shows Black sentiment moving away from Democrats with almost 20% of Black voters indicating they would support a third party candidate. Now we have new data from Gallup reporting that “The Democratic Party’s wide lead over Republicans in Black Americans’ party preferences has shrunk by nearly 20 points over the past three years.” Among Black Americans surveyed‚ 66% said they identify as Democrat/lean Democrat and 19% Republican/lean Republican‚ for a differential of 47 points. A little over three years ago in 2020‚ in the same survey‚ 77% of Black Americans identified as Democrat/lean Democrat‚ compared to 11% identifying as Republican/lean Republican‚ for a differential of 66 points. In just three years‚ the differential between Black support for Democrats and for Republicans has shrunk 19 points. Overall‚ the 47-point differential in this latest survey is the smallest since Gallup first started doing the survey in 1999‚ when the differential was 72 points. With recent elections decided by tiny margins in battleground states‚ a fundamental change in voting behavior by one key demographic -- Blacks -- can be a game changer. The implications over the long haul are profound given the demographic changes taking place‚ with the percentage of the white vote‚ which accounts for the majority of Republican votes‚ shrinking in each election. In 2020‚ whites accounted for 67% of the vote. This compared to 1980 when the white vote stood at 88%. Per the Census Bureau‚ the percentage of the U.S. population that is white will be down to 45% by 2060. So‚ any movement of Blacks‚ and Hispanics‚ away from Democrats means a lot. Why is this apparent movement of Blacks from Democrats happening? Here’s one hypothesis I propose from the New York Times/Siena College Poll. That poll shows that‚ relative to whites‚ Blacks care more about economic issues than social issues. Sixty-five percent of Blacks say economic issues are most important compared to 53% of whites. Twenty-one percent of Blacks say social issues are most important compared to 33% of whites. Perhaps we are entering new times when fewer Blacks look to government for social justice and more want economic growth and opportunity. This means Republicans.

The new season of HBO’s Last Week Tonight debuted on Sunday with host John Oliver bitterly attacking Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas for making people’s lives “demonstrable worse for decades” and therefore offering him $1 million per year and a new luxury RV if he resigns and gets “the fuck off the Supreme Court.” A day later on Comedy Central’s The Daily Show‚ Jon Stewart approved‚ wondering if Thomas would accept the offer. Police in Colorado have charged two suspects with dual counts of murder and abuse of a corpse following the discovery of children's remains in a suitcase and a metal container south of Denver. The City of Pueblo Police Department charged and arrested Corena Rose Minjarez‚ 36‚ last week. Jesus Dominguez‚ 35 — also charged with two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of abuse of a corpse‚ as well as an additional charge of theft of government benefits — was arrested on Saturday. Jesus Dominguez Jr. and Yesenia Dominguez went missing in the summer of 2018. At the time‚ their ages were 5 and 3. Investigators were hoping to find the children alive. Instead they found two horrific crime scenes. Pueblo police were dispatched to a storage facility on Jan. 20 to follow up on a report of suspicious activity. A person at the scene had located a metal container in a storage unit filled with hardened concrete. Investigators searched the container‚ finding the remains of a child buried within. Two days later‚ Pueblo police established that the remains belonged to a young female. Following the grisly discovery‚ police arrested Jesus Dominguez and Corena Minjarez. According to police‚ the suspects raised the possibility that the children were in Phoenix‚ Arizona. However‚ when police explored this possibility‚ it proved to be a dead end. While the suspects were initially cut loose‚ police soon explored additional troubling links between the duo and the victims. Earlier this month‚ police tracked down a vehicle belonging to Minjarez at a local scrap yard. On Feb. 6‚ officers executed a search warrant and found a young boy's body stuffed into a suitcase and locked away in the trunk. On Feb. 15‚ Pueblo police confirmed through DNA analysis that the remains discovered at the two locations belonged to the missing Dominguez children. Sgt. Franklyn Ortega of the Pueblo Police Department told the New York Times that no missing children report had been filed regarding the victims. The Russian authorities reportedly arrested a woman on Tuesday who has dual U.S.-Russian citizenship. The authorities claim she was apprehended on suspicion of treason for raising funds for the Ukrainian military‚ according to Fox News Digital.Russia's Federal Security Service in Yekaterinburg said that it had "suppressed the illegal activities" of a 33-year-old woman who has yet to be identified. She is reportedly from Los Angeles.The Security Service went on to claim that the woman had been "proactively collecting funds ... which were subsequently used to purchase tactical medical items‚ equipment‚ means of destruction and ammunition for the Ukrainian armed forces."The Russian authorities added that the woman had been acting "against the security of our country" and had been helping the Ukrainian army while she was in the U.S.‚ according to CBS News. If the woman is found guilty‚ she could face up to life in prison under Russian legislation that has become more draconian since the start of the conflict in Ukraine.The revelation came amid Russia's decision to extend the detention of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich after rejecting his lawyers' appeal in the case. Gershkovich has been accused by the Russian government of spying in the interests of the U.S.The journalist will now have to sit behind bars in Russia until at least March 30‚ which would mark a full year since he was initially apprehended by the Russian authorities.Russia has arrested several other U.S. nationals‚ including former U.S. Marine Paul Whelan. Whelan has been imprisoned in Russia since 2018‚ currently serving a 16-year sentence for alleged espionage.Reports noted that Secretary of State Antony Blinken had spoken with Whelan on the phone last week. The U.S. insists Whelan has been wrongfully detained.In December 2023‚ Whelan told the BBC that it was a "serious betrayal" by the U.S. government to leave him in Russia. "It's extremely frustrating. A mother in Alabama reportedly ran over her 7-year-old son with her car after making him walk home from school as punishment‚ according to the Independent.Sarai Rachel James‚ 27‚ reportedly picked her son up from school on February 9 and heard from the school principal that he had misbehaved in class. She stopped her car a short distance from the school and told her son to get out and walk the rest of the way home. Reports noted that the distance between the school and the boy's house was about eight blocks.The boy walked and jogged with his mom driving behind him with her flashers on. After the boy had run two or three blocks‚ she slowed down‚ and the child reached for the door handle to try to get back into the vehicle. But James suddenly accelerated and pulled the boy under the car. The boy was run over by the back tire‚ according to the Miami Herald. The boy was soon taken to a Birmingham hospital to be treated for abrasions on his back and the side of his head.Boaz Police Department Chief Michael Abercrombie said that "it was a miracle he was not hurt worse than what he could have been.""She may not have realized he was doing that‚" Abercrombie said. "God watched over him‚" he added.Investigators said that they believe the mother did not mean to run over the boy‚ but that it was the punishment that ultimately led to him being seriously injured. As a result‚ James has been charged with aggravated child abuse. She was released on a $50‚000 bond‚ and it is not clear whether she has retained an attorney in the case.James is reportedly not to have any contact with her son. It is not clear who the boy has been staying with since the incident.A 53-year-old woman was also in the vehicle during the incident. Reports have not identified who the woman was or whether she had any relationship with the boy. She was charged with endangering the welfare of a child and eventually released on a $500 bond.It is unclear what kind of trouble the boy had been in at school that motivated his mother to carry out the punishment.
