Alice Austen : The New York Photojournalist For Ladies Who Bicycle And Other City Types

Alice Austen (March 17, 1866–June 9, 1952) lived in Clear Comfort, a Victorian Gothic waterfront property on the Staten Island shoreline by the Verrazano Narrows Bridge, with her her life partner Gertrude Tate. This unique vantage point gave the photographer a view of the erecting of the Statue of Liberty (1886), troops returning from World War I and people arriving at Ellis Island. But she is best known for photographing whatever she encountered. In Street Types of New York, published in 1896, we see how she observed various people at work. At other times she took her camera by bicycle to tennis clubs, producing an archive of action shots, and on trains and boats to show us people aboard.   Bicycling for Ladies, the book illustrated by Alice Austen, 1896 In 1945, Austen lost her fortune in the Wall Street crash of 1929 and was evicted from Clear Comfort. She and Tate were looked after by their families, none of whom approved of their lifelong relationship and denied their request to be buried together. In 1950, Austen’s archive of 7,500 pictures were moved to Historic Richmond Town, formerly the Staten Island Historical Society. This month, her archive was returned to Clear Comfort, now known as Alice Austen House. by   “In this home studio, which was also one of her photographic muses, she produced thousands of photographs of a rapidly changing New York City, making significant contributions to photographic history, documenting New York’s immigrant populations, Victorian women’s social activities, and the natural and architectural world of her travels.” – Alice Austen House   The post Alice Austen : The New York Photojournalist For Ladies Who Bicycle And Other City Types appeared first on Flashbak.

Trump’s Two-Week Window for Diplomacy Was a Smoke Screen

Well, he did it. He actually did it. President Donald Trump had insisted for months that he wanted the ultimate deal with Iran, one that would put a definitive end to the country’s ability to produce a nuclear weapon. As late as Thursday, he’d suggested that Iran’s leaders would have up to two more weeks to negotiate. But at that point, he had already made up his mind: The United States was going to bomb Iran.

Minnesota shootings suspect was a 'prepper', FBI says

The suspect accused of fatally shooting a Minnesota lawmaker and her husband in a gun rampage last week was a doomsday "prepper", according to the FBI. The wife of the accused, Vance Boelter, told investigators the family was among a small group of Americans who "prepare for major or catastrophic incidents", said a court document. Boelter, 57, has been charged with killing Democratic House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, last Saturday.

Trump’s envoy urges Musk to provide free Starlink to ‘friends’ in Iran

US Presidential Envoy for Special Assignments Richard Grenell has urged SpaceX CEO Elon Musk to provide free Starlink access across Iran so that his “friends” can have uninterrupted “access to information.” US President Donald Trump has announced that American forces have carried out a coordinated hit using missiles and an airstrike targeting three nuclear facilities in Iran, just over a week after Israel launched its first attack on the country.

MAGA influencers fall in line behind Trump after U.S. airstrikes hit Iran

The MAGA movement's top influencers were divided over bombing Iran until President Donald Trump did just that Saturday night. Now, at least for the time being, the lay leaders in the president's base appear to be rallying around a position that spares Trump criticism: Direct attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities are justified, as long as American troops aren't sent into a third full war halfway around the world in the last quarter of a century.

Trump Slams Windmills In Rant On Green Tax Credits—His Latest Attack Against Turbines

Trump said in a Truth Social post he “HATED” green tax credits in the “Big Beautiful Bill,” saying the cuts are largely a “giant SCAM.” The bill, a massive measure currently in the Senate that will extend tax cuts passed by Trump during his first term, will remove or limit tax credits for electric vehicles and home energy efficiency if passed, as well as create gradual, year-by-year cuts to wind and solar farm tax credits.

Iran’s foreign minister to meet Putin

Iran’s foreign minister is heading to Moscow to meet with Vladimir Putin tomorrow in the wake of US strikes on Tehran’s nuclear facilities. Calling Russia a “friend of Iran,” Abbas Araghchi warned that Iran “reserves all options to defend its security, its interests, its people...All options are on the table.” Mr Araghchi said he will speak to Iran’s key ally on how to proceed. “We always consult with each other,” he added in a press conference in Istanbul.  His visit to Russia...
