What Heritage President Tells Global Elites at Davos Conference

Officials in a future Republican presidential administration in the U.S. must reject a left-leaning global agenda‚ Heritage Foundation President Kevin Roberts told a crowd Thursday at the World Economic Forum in Davos‚ Switzerland.  “I will be candid and say the agenda that every single member of the administration needs to have is to compile a list of everything that has ever been proposed at the World Economic Forum and object to all of them wholesale‚” Roberts said‚ speaking as a leader of America’s conservative movement.  “Anyone not prepared to do that and take away this power of the unelected bureaucrats and give it back to the American people is unprepared to be part of the next conservative administration‚” the president of the leading U.S. think tank said. (The Daily Signal is The Heritage Foundation’s news outlet.) Anyone not prepared to take away the power of unelected bureaucrats and give it back to the American people is unprepared to be part of the next conservative administration. #WEF24 pic.twitter.com/8hRtg9Qs9L— Kevin Roberts (@KevinRobertsTX) January 18‚ 2024 Roberts was just as candid at several points at the annual World Economic Forum in Davos while participating in a panel discussion titled “What can we expect from a possible Republican administration in 2025 in terms of continuation or deviation from this course?”  The World Economic Forum is an international organization that typically includes politicians and corporate leaders who promote specific global issues.  Joining Roberts on the panel were Walter Russell Mead‚ distinguished fellow at the New York-based Hudson Institute; former Sen. Rob Portman‚ R-Ohio‚ now chairman of the Portman Center for Policy Solutions‚ University of Cincinnati; Wall Street Journal Editor-at-Large Gerard Baker; and Allison Schrager‚ senior fellow at the New York-based Manhattan Institute. The moderator was Robin Niblett‚ a distinguished fellow at Chatham House‚ a British-based international affairs think tank. Baker was the first panelist to raise the prospect that if former President Donald Trump is elected to another term in the November election‚ he would become a dictator. The Wall Street Journal editor called it a “legitimate” concern‚ saying America’s constitutional republic would be “tested” but said the Constitution’s separation of powers would prevent a dictatorship from occurring.  My message to the self-appointed global elites: Your time is up. pic.twitter.com/Wj2Bntjztz— Kevin Roberts (@KevinRobertsTX) January 18‚ 2024 President Joe Biden and his campaign‚ as well as many other Democrats‚ have said that Trump desires to become a dictator.  When asked about the matter‚ Roberts called it “laughable” that anyone would suggest the World Economic Forum is protecting liberal democracy and equally so to attack Trump as a would-be dictator.  “The very reason that I’m here in Davos is to explain to many people in this room and who are watching—with all due respect‚ nothing personal—but that you are part of the problem‚” Heritage’s president said. “Political elites tell the people on three or four or five issues that the reality is X‚ when in fact the reality is Y.”  Roberts noted that the World Economic Forum promotes a narrative that illegal immigration is positive‚ that there is no public safety threat in large American cities‚ and that climate change is catastrophic.  The fourth issue he brought up is the WEF’s embrace of China.  “China‚ the No. 1 adversary not just to the United States‚ but to free people on planet Earth. Not only do we at Davos not say that‚ we give the Chinese Communist Party a platform‚” Roberts said.  In a conference call with reporters after the panel‚ Roberts noted that some in the front row seemed to gasp when he talked about China and also appeared to express frustration. He also said the WEF provided a platform to Iran’s Islamist regime. Fifth‚ Roberts said‚ the World Health Organization is pushing gender ideology even though it’s being rejected by countries in Northern Europe.  “The new president‚ especially if it is President Trump‚ will‚ as you like to say‚ trust the science‚” Roberts told the Davos audience. “He will understand the basic biological reality of manhood and womanhood. Do you know why? Not because of retribution. Not because he’s a dictator. But because he has the power of the American people behind him.”  Although Baker and Roberts had a bit of a disagreement over Trump‚ as well as election reform earlier in the panel‚ the Journal editor referred to Heritage’s Project 2025‚ which is designed to help the next conservative president choose appointees. “Kevin [Roberts] and The Heritage Foundation have been working very energetically to produce kind of a blueprint for the second administration‚” Baker said‚ “and I think it will be much more coherent than the first administration in terms of personnel‚ in terms of policy. Frankly‚ Trump just picked a lot of people that he had seen on Fox News and quite liked for serious jobs in his administration. I think that wouldn’t happen this time. … There is going to be a much more serious‚ coherent approach this time.” Later‚ Roberts fielded a question on what actions Trump would take on his first day in office if he is elected to a second term.  “As soon as what I hope is a very brief inaugural address concludes—not because what would be in it would be unwise‚ quite the opposite‚ but because our country is on fire—there needs to be pushing through Schedule F civil service reform‚ so that the president can fire a good number of the unelected bureaucrats in the administrative state‚” Roberts said‚ adding: The administrative state is the greatest threat to democracy in the United States‚ and we need to end it. The second thing is‚ he needs to really confront all of the policies surrounding so-called climate change. We love wind and solar [energy] at Heritage‚ we just want them to stand on their own in the free market. Because that affects human prosperity; more than a billion people in the world have been lifted out of poverty in the last 35 years because of fossil fuels. Trump also would have to take a different stance on government spending than he did in his four years in office‚ Roberts said. “The third thing he’s going to do—and this would be a bit of a departure from his last administration‚ when he spent too much money—is really be focused on fiscal restraint because we simply can’t afford it‚” Roberts said.  “It’s something that transcends the political Left and the political Right‚” Heritage’s president said. “And I can tell you from the standpoint of Heritage and all of us at Project 2025‚ [we] will be zealously supportive of all three of those actions.” Ken McIntyre contributed to this report. Trump Urges Supreme Court to Reinstate Ballot Access‚ Says He Never Engaged in Insurrection

Trump Urges Supreme Court to Reinstate Ballot Access‚ Says He Never Engaged in Insurrection

President Donald Trump’s legal team filed a brief with the Supreme Court Thursday‚ arguing that a Colorado Supreme Court ruling to keep him off the ballot would “disenfranchise tens of millions of Americans.” The Colorado Supreme Court ruled last month that Trump was not eligible to be a presidential candidate because he had violated Section 3 of the 14th Amendment‚ which bans lawmakers from engaging in insurrections or rebellions against the Constitution. The Supreme Court has agreed to take up the case and will hear oral arguments Feb. 8. In the brief‚ Trump’s legal team urges the Supreme Court to act quickly. “The Court should put a swift and decisive end to these ballot-disqualification efforts‚ which threaten to disenfranchise tens of millions of Americans and which promise to unleash chaos and bedlam if other state courts and state officials follow Colorado’s lead and exclude the likely Republican presidential nominee from their ballots‚” write Trump’s lawyers. The brief also forcefully makes the case that Trump did not engage in an insurrection during the Capitol Riot on Jan. 6‚ 2021. “President Trump never participated in or directed any of the illegal conduct that occurred at the Capitol on January 6‚ 2021. In fact‚ the opposite is true‚ as President Trump repeatedly called for peace‚ patriotism‚ and law and order‚” states the brief. Additionally‚ Trump’s lawyers note that he instructed then-Defense Secretary Mark Esper‚ who had the ability to call on the National Guard‚ on Jan. 5 to do what was necessary to keep Americans safe. The Trump legal team also writes that “[r]aising concerns about the integrity of the recent federal election and pointing to reports of fraud and irregularity is not an act of violence or a threat of force” and “giving a passionate political speech and telling supporters to metaphorically ‘fight like hell’ for their beliefs is not insurrection either.” The brief also takes on the argument that Trump spoke in “coded” language to urge his supporters to rebel. Referring to the plaintiffs in the Colorado case‚ Trump’s lawyers write: The Anderson litigants insist that President Trump’s speech at the Ellipse and his statements and tweets leading up to the events of January 6‚ 2021‚ should be regarded as acts of ‘insurrection’ because [Chapman University] Professor [Pete] Simi opined that President Trump was speaking in ‘coded’ language to his supporters. … Both the district court and the state supreme court relied heavily on Simi’s ‘coded language’ testimony in concluding that President Trump’s speeches and statements qualify as ‘insurrection.’ …. But this Court should not allow a candidate’s eligibility for the presidency to be determined or in any way affected by testimony from a sociology professor who claims an ability to decipher ‘coded’ messages. The fact remains President Trump did not commit or participate in the unlawful acts that occurred at the Capitol‚ and this Court cannot tolerate a regime that allows a candidate’s eligibility for office to hinge on a trial court’s assessment of dubious expert-witness testimony or claims that President Trump has powers of telepathy. Earlier Thursday‚ a large group of lawmakers led by Sen. Ted Cruz‚ R-Texas‚ and House Majority Leader Steve Scalise urged the Supreme Court to overturn the Colorado ruling in a brief. “President [Joe] Biden has based his reelection effort on the notion that he is safeguarding democracy‚ but he and his radical allies are attempting to undermine the central component of the democratic process—the people’s power to choose their leaders through elections‚” said Scalise in a statement‚ adding: Not only does the Colorado Supreme Court have no authority to remove President Trump from the ballot in the 2024 presidential election‚ but the broad and ill-defined justifications they use can easily be abused in the future to block political opponents from assuming office. In addition to Cruz and Scalise‚ House Speaker Mike Johnson‚ 41 Senate Republicans‚ and 135 House Republicans signed onto the brief. Have an opinion about this article? GOP Lawmakers Call for Mayorkas Impeachment After Mother Claims His Border Policies ‘Partially Responsible’ for Daughter’s Death

All 18 Republicans of a key House committee support the impeachment and removal of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas‚ an announcement that directly followed a hearing Thursday in which two mothers laid the blame for the deaths of their daughters at the feet of President Joe Biden’s appointee.   “In my humble opinion‚ Mr. Mayorkas’ border policy is partially responsible for my daughter’s death‚” Arizona mother Josephine Dunn told the House Homeland Security Committee. “His wide-open border policy allows massive quantities of poisonous fentanyl into our country.”   "I personally feel Mr. Mayorkas is responsible for opening that border." – Josephine Dunn. pic.twitter.com/aDho7JddXo— House Homeland GOP (@HomelandGOP) January 18‚ 2024 Dunn’s daughter Ashley died in 2021 at age 26 after a drug dealer sold her a pill containing fentanyl.   “We’re losing our children‚” Dunn told the committee. “We’re losing a generation of children. We’re at war. We need our military at the border. That’s what we need. We don’t need more Border Patrol. We need our military at the border stopping the drugs.”   Mother of child killed by fentanyl tells Congress "we're at war with the cartels." "We're losing our children. We're losing a generation of children. We're at war. We need our military at the border." pic.twitter.com/bzmKOrEgWl— Virginia Allen (@Virginia_Allen5) January 18‚ 2024 Mother Tammy Nobles‚ who also testified‚ recounted the tragedy of losing her child in 2022. Less than a week after Kayla Hamilton turned 20‚ her mother testified‚ she was violently killed in her Maryland home by a MS-13 gang member who was an illegal alien. The gang member strangled Hamilton with a phone-charging cord and sexually assaulted her.  “Kayla fought for her life that day‚ and in the end she lost to an individual who wasn’t even supposed to be allowed in the country‚” Nobles said. “For me‚ this is not a political issue. This is a safety issue for everyone living in the United States.”  "For me‚ this is not a political issue. This is a safety issue for everyone living in the United States." – Tammy Nobles pic.twitter.com/L6r625sQ8N— House Homeland GOP (@HomelandGOP) January 18‚ 2024 The two mothers testified at the second hearing advancing impeachment proceedings against Mayorkas‚ which follow the committee’s monthslong investigation of how Biden’s homeland security secretary has responded to the crisis of illegal immigration at the southern border.   After Thursday’s hearing concluded‚ all 18 GOP committee members issued a statement calling for Mayorkas’ impeachment by the House.   “After our nearly yearlong investigation and subsequent impeachment proceedings‚ and having exhausted all other options to hold him accountable‚ it is unmistakably clear to all of us—and to the American people—that Congress must exercise its constitutional duty and impeach Secretary Mayorkas‚” the Republican lawmakers said in the public statement.    The 18 Republicans include Chairman Mark Green of Tennessee; Michael McCaul‚ Tony Gonzales‚ Morgan Luttrell‚ and August Pfluger of Texas; Michael Guest and Mike Ezell of Mississippi; Clay Higgins of Louisiana; Dan Bishop of North Carolina; Carlos Gimenez and Laurel Lee of Florida; Andrew Garbarino‚ Nick LaLota‚ and Anthony D’Esposito of New York; Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia; Dale Strong of Alabama; Josh Brecheen of Oklahoma; and Eli Crane of Arizona.   “The secretary [Mayorkas] has consistently‚ willfully‚ and systemically refused to follow the laws passed by Congress‚ abused his authority‚ and breached the trust of Congress and the American people on numerous occasions‚” the 18 lawmakers said. “The result of his failure to fulfill his oath of office has been a border crisis that is unprecedented in American history—a crisis that has cost the lives of thousands of Secretary Mayorkas’ fellow Americans.”  Green‚ the committee chairman‚ last year launched a five-phase investigation into Mayorkas‚ in which 10 public hearings examined these topics: “DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas’ Dereliction of Duty.”  “DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas Has Emboldened Cartels‚ Criminals‚ and America’s Enemies.”  “The Devastating Human Costs of the DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas’ Open-Borders Policies.”  “The Historic Dollar Costs of DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas’ Open-Borders Policies.”  “The Massive Waste and Abuse Enabled by DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.”   If the House votes to impeach Mayorkas‚ it is unlikely that two-thirds of the Senate would vote to remove him‚ given Democrats’ control of the upper chamber.   Have an opinion about this article?
