Don’t expect Apple to tell you when iPhone sideloading is coming to the US

It's a big week for the European Union's Digital Markets Act (DMA) legislation. The companies deemed to be tech gatekeepers in the EU‚ and those who operate gatekeeper services‚ will have to implement changes by March 7th. For Apple‚ that means rolling out the iOS 17.4 update to everyone. The iOS 17.4 software release brings support for iPhone sideloading and all that entails. Third-party app marketplaces‚ third-party payment systems‚ and a new deal for developers looking to take advantage of the changes are all part of the changes coming to the iPhone in Europe. However‚ the immediate effects for the consumer will be minimal. iPhone sideloading won't be as good as you think‚ and that's something I've explained more than once. App Store alternatives also won't happen overnight. Not only that‚ but only two developers so far have announced upcoming digital marketplaces.  The most important thing to know about iPhone sideloading is that it'll be restricted to the EU‚ where Apple is forced to implement it. All international iPhone users will be left out. They'll be blocked from accessing the EU features‚ and there probably won't be a way to circumvent the restrictions.  Moreover‚ Apple support personnel will probably not answer questions about iPhone sideloading in the US or other markets outside Europe.  Continue reading... visionOS 1.1 RC now available to Apple Vision Pro developers

A week after seeding beta 4‚ Apple is now releasing visionOS 1.1 RC to developers. This is the first main testing version of this spatial computer since it’s been released at the beginning of February. Among the changes are several usability improvements and other new features. visionOS 1.1 RC can be downloaded on the device’s Settings app by allowing developer betas. One of the new features is Apple Device Management to Vision Pro. With that‚ IT departments can manage these headsets in the same way they manage other Apple devices. Another change for visionOS 1.1 RC is the ability to reset this spatial computer if the user forgets the password. This has also become available with the latest visionOS 1.0.3 version. Several users have reported that Apple has also improved FaceTime digital personas and the passthrough image of the real world. Although it’s unclear how much Apple will still be able to improve‚ the company also highlighted tips and tricks to ensure this device captures your best persona. Here’s what you need to have in mind: Capturing won’t start until you’re holding your Apple Vision Pro at eye level. If you don’t start the capture within 15 minutes‚ it’s canceled. You can restart the capture after you put your Apple Vision Pro back on. Find a space with front-facing‚ even lighting so there aren’t shadows on your face. Avoid bright light sources overhead or in the background. Stand or sit in front of a simple‚ neutral background without too many details. Stay in the same location and position during the capture process. Relax your shoulders while holding Apple Vision Pro. Natural‚ genuine facial expressions produce the best results. Alongside visionOS 1.1 RC‚ Apple has also released the Release Candidate version of macOS 14.4. BGR will let you know if we discover anything new with this beta. Apple releases macOS 14.4 RC after M3 MacBook Air announcement

After announcing the new M3 MacBook Air this morning‚ Apple is now releasing macOS 14.4 RC. While macOS 14.3 was already a mild update‚ 14.4 doesn’t look much more than that. That said‚ Apple is pretty much adding small new features across the macOS 14.4 beta system. For example‚ with macOS 14.2‚ Apple added support for multiple timers on macOS Sonoma. With macOS 14.4 RC‚ the company is expanding this feature with all ringtones currently available. Previously‚ only the classic tones were available. For Apple Music‚ Books‚ and Podcasts apps‚ Apple switched the Listen Now tab to Home. Although there aren’t other changes‚ it’s interesting that Cupertino decided to make this move. One of the most interesting macOS 14.4 RC features is Apple adding 108 new emojis in RC. Most of the figures are skin tone modifiers and gender variants. Still‚ the new emojis include a lime‚ shaking heads‚ a phoenix‚ and four new gender-neutral family emojis intended to be represented via silhouettes. Apple is also aware of a bug that the Weather app might crash on launch on Intel Macs. The company is working on a fix‚ which means it’ll likely be fixed by the time Cupertino releases macOS 14.4 to all users. With macOS 14.3‚ Apple added the following features: Collaborate on playlists in Apple Music allows you to invite friends to join your playlist and everyone can add‚ reorder‚ and remove songs. Emoji reactions can be added to any track in a collaborative playlist in Apple Music. Apple Care &; Warranty in Settings shows your coverage for all devices signed in with your Apple ID. Besides macOS 14.4 RC‚ Apple is also seeding the Release Candidate version of visionOS. BGR will let you know once we learn more about the features of this operating system update. watchOS 10.4 RC adds four new features for Apple Watch users

With watchOS 10.4 launching soon‚ Apple has now released its RC version. While watchOS 10.3 was a minor update‚ this one has some interesting new features that users should be looking forward to trying. The first of them is the addition of over 100 new emojis. Although the new figures include a lime‚ shaking heads‚ a phoenix‚ and four new gender-neutral family emojis intended to be represented via silhouettes‚ skin tone modifiers‚ and gender variants represent the majority of new emojis. They can be used in iMessage and other messaging apps with your Apple Watch. Besides that‚ watchOS 10.4 beta 4 adds a new tweak for Apple Vision Pro users. Since both devices rely on double-tap gestures‚ you can now turn on the Ignore Double Tap setting when using Apple’s spatial computer. Here’s how Apple describes this feature: “When this is on‚ the double tap gesture will be temporarily ignored while using Vision Pro.” For those unaware‚ pinching your fingers is the way you control Apple Vision Pro‚ but if you double tap your fingers‚ this is also how you can control Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2. Thankfully‚ the owners of both newer Apple Watches and Vision Pro won’t have this issue for longer. watchOS 10.4 beta 2 also brings improvements to Siri‚ as you can now wake the personal assistant with only its name by saying “Siri” instead of “Hey Siri.” In addition‚ Siri can read incoming messages in multiple languages‚ including Spanish‚ Portuguese‚ French‚ German‚ and more. Lastly‚ there is an updated Timer UI if you care about those tiny details. Alongside watchOS 10.4 RC‚ Apple is also seeding the Release Candidate version of macOS 14.4‚ visionOS 1.1‚ and tvOS 17.4. BGR will let you know if we find anything different on this build. Don't Miss: watchOS 10: Release date‚ new Apple Watch features‚ beta‚ more The post watchOS 10.4 RC adds four new features for Apple Watch users appeared first on BGR. tvOS 17.4 RC now available to Apple TV users

tvOS 17.4 RC now available to Apple TV users

With tvOS 17.4 RC now available‚ Apple doesn’t have notable features for this software update. However‚ this beta cycle was full of references for unreleased products and operating systems. With beta 1‚ the company added references to unreleased homeOS software. Most likely‚ this software could be used for a HomePod with a screen. Bloomberg and other outlets have reported on a HomePod with iPad integration‚ like an Amazon Echo Show product. Apple is also apparently working on a HomePod with a circular display. That said‚ instead of the current wave animations that we have on the HomePod‚ we could see music and weather data‚ for example. That would come in handy‚ as tvOS 17.4 beta was adding a SharePlay feature for Apple Music. iPhone users could scan a QR code on the Apple Music app for the Apple TV and join a SharePlay session to add songs to a list and create a listening party. Unfortunately‚ Apple removed this function in previous betas. Besides that‚ tvOS 17.4 RC also hints at a new HomePod with a screen. 9to5Mac‘s Filipe Espósito found references to an upcoming HomePod with a screen‚ which is in an “advanced stage of development.” According to Espósito‚ here’s what he could find with tvOS 17.4 beta: This unreleased device is identified as Z314 It is powered by an A15 Bionic chip (which both the newest Apple TV 4K and the iPad mini 6 also are) tvOS 17.4 beta 3 adds support to new SwiftUI frameworks for the HomePod‚ including a tool used to debug unresponsive UI in iOS apps. This all leads the journalist to believe Apple is indeed working on a HomePod with a screen. Alongside tvOS 17.4 RC‚ Apple is also seeding the Release Candidate version of macOS 14.4‚ visionOS 1.1‚ and watchOS 10.4. BGR will let you know if we learn anything new about this or any other upcoming operating system update.
