'Detention is a deterrent'

A maintenance man at the old Hotel Dixie in Midtown Manhattan mentioned his sighting of a Pteranodon-like cryptid‚ along with other witnesses‚ in Long Beach‚ New York in the late 1970s.I received the following account:"Hello‚ Mr. Strickler. I'm a big fan! I'm writing to you about something I communicated to Linda Moulton Howe (and unfortunately‚ I didn't get back in touch with her in time). My Mom was a switchboard operator at what used to be the Hotel Dixie‚ later changed to the Hotel Carter‚ located in Midtown Manhattan.I occasionally accompanied her on the weekends when she went to work‚ and as she worked‚ I entertained myself with reading books. Dinosaurs being a favorite subject‚ was often the choice of reading. I had a fascinating conversation with a maintenance man‚ whose name was either Vito or Vincent (I can't remember‚ exactly).Anyway‚ this maintenance worker said he was driving down one of the highways in Long Beach‚ NY‚ and while driving along the highway‚ with the beach and water to his right‚ he looked up skyward‚ and first‚ what he mistook for a large kite‚ turned out to be a large‚ prehistoric-looking flying reptile or Pteranodon!  Here's the shocker‚ though: OTHER People‚ stopped‚ and got out of their cars‚ to see this creature also!  It (the Pteranodon)‚ seemed curious about everyone who stopped and was observing it‚ hovering with the wind current as it did so.This same maintenance worker said he regretted not having a camera‚ as other car drivers did‚ who were taking pictures. After witnessing this cryptid‚ the Pteranodon lost interest in the observers and glided away with the wind current‚ lazily flapping its wings about 2 or 3 times‚  till out of sight. What's AMAZING about this whole incident‚ is that Linda Moulton Howe got another SIGHTING of this same creature about a few months to a year afterward! I also mentioned this alleged sighting to JONATHAN WHITCOMB‚ and let him know I personally didn't see this‚ but‚ my Mother's co-worker did. This happened during the late 1970s." A West Virginia man was traveling near Point Pleasant‚ WV during a snowstorm when he encountered a tall dark being standing in the middle of the highway. Soon‚ he approached a jackknifed tractor-trailer.I received the following account:“I'm here in Charleston‚ West Virginia‚ but back in 2011‚ December 15‚ I was traveling through Point Pleasant for work on US Route 35. It was about 3:00-3:30 in the morning‚ icy conditions. The roads were snow-covered. Just your typical December early morning in West Virginia.I was going around this bend and this big figure appeared in the roadway. I mean‚ I couldn't see anything beyond it. It looked to be‚ maybe‚ 8 to 10 feet tall. It looked to have wings. I just stopped in the middle of the road. I couldn't go anywhere. I froze. Not only my vehicle was stopped but I froze and this figure‚ whatever it was‚ just stood there in the middle of the road and I was there for‚ I don't know‚ a minute or two minutes. I mean‚ I don't know how long but it seemed like forever and it finally darted off into the woods. And I sat there for another few minutes‚ trying to collect myself. I kept going around the bend and about a mile up the road a tractor-trailer had jackknifed. There were no other vehicles around. It looked like it just happened. Luckily I was able to call emergency services and get them out on the scene. I just had this weird feeling about myself.Well‚ going back to 1967‚ December 15‚ there at the Silver Bridge my great-grandfather actually went across the Silver Bridge like an hour or so before it collapsed and my great-grandma‚ I never had a chance to meet my great-grandfather but my great-grandmother said that‚ he said‚ after everything had happened‚ he had this weird feeling about himself going across that bridge and as soon as he got to work. He worked at one of the factories out there at Point Pleasant and he said that he just had this weird feeling about himself and that's how I felt about what happened on December 15‚ 2011‚ so many years after the Silver Bridge collapse.I never really could tell what the creature was. I just know that it was a big dark figure‚ probably about 50 feet in front of me. It was in my headlights and it was snowing. It was just me in the vehicle and like I said‚ it was like 3:00 in the morning or something like that. I mean it was just‚ I don't know if it was warning me not to go right then‚ like‚ whenever that tractor-trailer jackknifed. It was like it was just telling me‚ 'You need to stop!' X (former Twitter) has not succeeded in its legal bid to block a controversial law in California. The law is officially there to help regulate online content moderation‚ but the social network argued this piece of legislation is just a way to force platforms to censor speech that happens to be deemed as controversial by the authorities. The legal battle concerns state law AB 587‚ signed by California Governor Gavin Newsom in 2022‚ while X Corp. now attempted to argue its case in terms of free speech (First Amendment) violations imposed by said law. But a federal judge in California’s capital Sacramento did not accept this argument‚ saying instead that AB is above board. That same law mandating‚ critics say as a form of pressure‚ that platforms must tell the government how they are “moderating” whatever is considered to be hate speech‚ racism‚ harassment‚ disinformation‚ radicalism‚ extremism‚ and foreign political interference. In addition‚ these platforms must then report to the authorities on how they are enforcing those rules. Speaking of (indirect) pressure‚ one of the points the court’s decision makes is that AB 587 is not inconsistent with Section 230 – a part of the Communications Decency Act (CDA). This section is designed to give immunity to online platforms from liability related to third-party content‚ but also for removing that content under certain conditions. Relevant to this‚ the ruling reads‚ “AB 587 only contemplates liability for failing to make the required disclosures about a company’s terms of service and statistics about content moderation activities‚ or materially omitting or misrepresenting the required information. It does not provide for any potential liability stemming from a company’s content moderation activities per se‚” and adds: “The law therefore is not inconsistent with section 230(c) and does not interfere with companies’ ability to “self-regulate offensive third party content without fear of liability.” District Judge William Shubb stated that even if AB 587’s requirements “appear to place a substantial compliance burden on social media companies” – there’s‚ according to the judge‚ yet another thing that “appears” to be true‚ namely‚ “it does not appear that the requirement is unjustified or unduly burdensome within the context of First Amendment law.” The essence of the court’s argument is to treat speech happening on X and other platforms as “commercial speech” (therefore not protected by the First Amendment) and this opinion is based on their own terms of service. Wrote Judge Shubb: “Although the terms of service may not literally be advertisements in the sense of proposing a commercial transaction‚ they are directed to potential consumers and may presumably play a role in the decision of whether to use the platform.” Lots of qualifiers there – by federal judge standards. The are seemingly similar laws in Florida and Texas‚ in terms of their requirements from social media companies – but skewed toward preventing censorship‚ rather than reinforcing it‚ like in California. The attempt to block those has gone all the way to the Supreme Court‚ which is expected to make a decision next year. Originally championed as a space for all voices‚ the platform’s minimal content moderation led to forced closure due to alleged violent speech and perceived insufficient regulation of speech by Big Tech giants following January 6th‚ 2021. The platform’s banishment from major web hosting services and app stores had a crippling impact‚ effectively signaling the end of the platform’s operations. However‚ with the recent acquisition by PDS Partners‚ Parler is readying for its renaissance. The Associated Press (AP) used to be a reliable wire service – that provided actual news‚ stripped of opinion or interpretation‚ for news media to incorporate in their own reporting. But‚ things have changed. In a piece “warning” that deepfakes have gone “mainstream” the AP also manages to claim‚ right in the title‚ that social media “guardrails” are fading. Spoiler: the article’s call to action is basically‚ “We need (even) more censorship here.” The footnote to the piece is interesting. Usually‚ these are simply legal warnings‚ and other factual information – but here‚ the agency defines itself as one that “receives support from several private foundations.” For what purpose? “To enhance its explanatory coverage of elections and democracy.” (The phrase‚ “explanatory coverage of democracy” doesn’t sound like not something George Orwell would edit out of his writing.) And now for‚ how one covers elections‚ and democracy‚ in an “explanatory” fashion. First‚ this is all about the 2024 US presidential ballot‚ although it starts off by mentioning the previous election. The January 6 riots‚ then what the authors term to be “false election conspiracy theories” (so – there true ones?) are there to frame the message about what must happen ahead of 2024. And‚ clearly‚ in order to help those now in power remain there. AP’s warning: however bad things were for democracy (from the pro-Biden point of view) the last time‚ they are now going to get worse. After all‚ hand-picked “experts” say so. There’s also an almost comedic moment in the article‚ when former President Trump – himself since 2016 the victim of the notion that “elections can’t be trusted” and many Democrats believing he is not a legitimately elected president and free to say so – accompanied by a fierce media campaign – is now accused as the one guilty of the trend. “Many Americans‚ egged on by former President Donald Trump‚ have continued to push the unsupported idea that elections throughout the U.S. can’t be trusted. A majority of Republicans (57%) believe Democrat Joe Biden was not legitimately elected president‚” writes the AP. Then‚ there’s that fear of deepfakes as supposedly the be-all-end-all of what’s‚ in reality‚ an extremely complex election process – and in reality‚ that “fear” is there simply as a vehicle to force social media platforms to censor content even more ahead of the 2024 vote. “I expect a tsunami of misinformation. I can’t prove that. I hope to be proven wrong. But the ingredients are there‚ and I am completely terrified‚” said University of Washington’s Oren Etzioni‚ unwittingly shooting the whole “anti deepfakes conspiracy theory‚” right in the foot. Taylor Swift may regret 2023 ending. Not only did it mark her most successful year to date‚ including a smash box office concert film‚ it meant she’ll be asked to do more than just sing in 2024. She’ll be recruited to help President Joe Biden win a second term. Sound farfetched? In September‚ California Gov. Gavin Newsom predicted Swift could play an outsized role in the 2024 election season. “What she was able to accomplish in getting young people activated to consider that they have a voice and they should have a voice in the next election‚ I think it’s profoundly powerful.” MSNBC didn’t wait for the new year to suggest just that. The far-Left outlet uncorked a reasonable op-ed about Swift’s sway over the 2024 presidential campaign. At the very least‚ it’s difficult to see how it would hurt the 81-year-old incumbent to appear on the campaign trail with a 33-year-old superstar who has her finger on the pulse of young America and is the most beloved cultural icon in the country. The writer argues she could change enough hearts and minds to impact the expected Biden-Trump rematch. The Hill trotted out a similar argument earlier this month‚ including specific plans to aid Biden. A more conservative approach to improving the likelihood of a Biden win may involve general nationwide calls to vote. A more aggressive intervention could include a complete endorsement of President Biden‚ potentially accompanied by joint public appearances or participation in private fundraisers. And Democrats will need every ounce of Swift’s influence.  The media and Democrats‚ but we repeat ourselves‚ won’t be able to lie about Hunter Biden’s laptop this time ’round‚ and Biden’s mental decline is getting harder to cover up. Incumbent presidents can‚ and should‚ run on their records. Are you better off today than you were four years ago? The answer for the vast majority of Americans‚ of course‚ is [bleep] no.  The term “Bidenomics” alone will be a handy cudgel for GOP strategists. Have you bought food or gas recently? Yikes. It’s why Swift’s name will be mentioned frequently in connection with Biden’s re-election campaign. Will she take the bait? Swift spent much of her career avoiding politics entirely. That changed following Donald Trump’s stunning presidential victory in 2016. Yet this year she reverted to her apolitical stance as she criss-crossed America in her Eras Tour and watched her career reach unprecedented heights. Will she risk that by personally dragging Biden over the finish line? Her youthful fans will shrug off the attempt. Others may not be as forgiving.  Bud Light 2.0? Should Swift stick to her apolitical mien you’ll see her fawning media coverage dry up. Even beau Travis Kelce might feel the sting. When she failed to pick a side in the Trump-Clinton slugfest media outlets played the White Supremacist Card against her. One is that taxpayers shouldn’t be on the hook for someone else’s decisions. Another is that the government has done nothing to fix the problems related to the giant wealth transfer they have enabled from young people to colleges and their administrators. But most staggering is that going to college is making Millennials and Gen Z less‚ not more‚ wealthy.As I did the research for my upcoming book‚ "You Will Own Nothing‚" one of the most surprising set of facts I found related to earnings and wealth of younger generations.For example‚ writer and pundit Kevin Drum analyzed median household incomes for the Boomer‚ Gen X‚ and Millennial generations at a midpoint of age 40. What he found is that the median income for Millennials‚ even when adjusted for inflation‚ was 21% higher than the Boomers’ median income at the same age and more than 10% higher than Gen X’s. Again‚ these are inflation-adjusted gains.However‚ when you look at the wealth story‚ both in terms of overall wealth as well as homeownership (which is the largest wealth asset across households in the United States)‚ Millennials are significantly lagging the other generations at the same point in time.In the aggregate‚ despite being a large generation‚ Millennials hold a lower share of wealth (percentage of overall wealth) than previous generations held at the same age. Insider reported‚ “When Boomers were roughly the same age as Millennials are now‚ they owned about 21% of America’s wealth‚ compared to Millennials' 5% share today‚ according to recent Fed data.” One of the culprits that may seem unlikely is college education. More specifically‚ the cost of college and university educations and the massive debt loads that young people are incurring to get them. To put it bluntly‚ college and university degrees have become the biggest legal financial scam in the country‚ and the U.S. government has morphed into the largest predatory lender in support of it.Individuals‚ sometimes even minors with parents co-signing or young individuals who have just turned eighteen‚ sign up for substantial financial commitments that delay or hinder their ability to create wealth if they can’t generate an appropriate investment return. It can even burden their families.As of Q1 2023‚ in the age group 25 to 34‚ around 15.1 million Americans held around a half-trillion dollars in college loan debt principal‚ and in the 35-to-49 age group‚ 14.7 million Americans held $636.2 billion.Now‚ debt can be useful in helping to increase your return on assets‚ such as when appropriately used to purchase a home or education that delivers a good return on your investment. However‚ with college educations‚ debt is being pushed and utilized in a way that is decoupled from achieving ROI. The government nationalizing a large part of the college lending business has driven up college costs in recent decades at a rate of almost five times the growth in GDP and a staggering almost eight times the growth in wages‚ according to Forbes. This has allowed colleges to profit directly at the expense of young people‚ increasing the cost of higher education far past the increase in benefits received from higher education. And the schools have absolutely no risk‚ creating a complete and total moral hazard.The profiteering college education structure is having a major impact on economic freedom and wealth creation for young individuals‚ as it is not enabling a good financial return‚ or any return on investment in some cases‚ for too many of those buying educations. Individuals aren’t contextualizing their choices about what they want to do and what they may need to do to fulfill their future objectives.This indebted youth-to-college pipeline has ultimately transferred a ton of wealth from young people to colleges and universities at the expense of the young setting out on a path to generate their own wealth.Remember that the opposite of creating wealth through the ownership of appreciating assets is the accumulation of liabilities and debts.When we hear about the benefits to students from attending college‚ it is always presented in terms of higher earnings. But if slightly higher earnings come with high debt loads that take years or even decades to pay down‚ that not only weakens the individual’s financial position‚ but also delays the ability to accumulate wealth.And‚ the wage gap between those with and without college educations itself has been recently contracting.To shift this‚ students who are taking out loans should be shown‚ at every step of the process‚ what their expected return on their investment is‚ based on their major‚ school‚ and other factors‚ and they should be required to sign off on that as part of the process.Colleges need to either be part of the underwriting process and hold a piece of the loan or be allowed to be sued if graduates aren’t able to use their degrees to better their professional outcomes.We are already giving the schools a quarter of a trillion dollars’ worth of taxpayer money at the state and local levels each year directly‚ on top of all other types of benefits and incentives that prop up their profiteering schemes. The least they could do is make the degrees they are selling worthwhile.And government should be removed from student lending altogether.Ask yourself‚ if the government wanted to keep young people from economic prosperity for their lives‚ would they do anything differently than they are doing now?Would this keep them dependent upon the government? Would this make them vote for more government that could “relieve them” of the burdens (those same burdens that were truly created by the government to begin with)?Profiteering has created a real wealth transfer that benefits the connected at the expense of the average American. Iran reportedly executed four people on Friday who were accused of spying for Israel. The incident took place amid the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas — the latter of which is believed to be working alongside Iran.The four people — three men and one woman — were reportedly hanged after being convicted of kidnapping Iranian security forces in an effort to extract intelligence from them‚ according to the Telegraph. The four alleged spies had also been accused of setting fire to cars and apartments belonging to Iranian intelligence agents.The names of the four executed are Vafa Hanareh‚ Aram Omari‚ Rahman Parhazo and the woman as Nasim Namazi.“Four members of a sabotage group related to the Zionist regime [Israel] ... were hanged this morning‚” the Mizan news agency reported. The group had apparently "committed extensive actions against the country's security under the guidance of ... Mossad‚" the Jewish state's spy agency.The Times of Israel reported that the four had been sentenced to death on charges of "moharebeh‚" or waging war against God‚ and "corruption on Earth." Tehran often claims that it has foiled Mossad operations throughout the country‚ but it is unclear how accurate these claims are. Earlier this month‚ Iran reportedly executed a man who was sentenced to death after being convicted of working with Israel's intelligence services. The judiciary's Mizan Online claimed that the man had been convicted of "intelligence cooperation and espionage for the benefit [of] the hostile Zionist regime."The unidentified man was also convicted of "collecting and providing classified information to the Mossad spy service with the aim of disrupting public order‚" according to the Times of Israel. Iran does not recognize Israel as an independent country‚ and the two have engaged in a shadow war for a number of years.
