The Religious Right Is A Blight

The Religious Right was born during the ineptitude of the Jimmy Carter presidency and came to maturity during the Bill Clinton years. It got old and feeble during the G.W. Bush years. And now under the Trump presidency, it is nothing but a rotting corpse. The Religious Right was created to be a cure, but …

Kris Kristofferson Once Called A Johnny Cash Song “The Best Country Song Ever Written”… With Cash Sitting Right Next To Him

A high honor from a close friend. The Highwaymen is one of the most stacked country music groups that we’ve ever seen. While each member of The Highwaymen consisted of men who had achieved incredible accolades on their own, together they were a force that could not be reckoned with. Back in 1991, The Highwaymen—Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson —sat down for an interview with New Zealand host Paul Holmes that yielded all sorts of soundbites. The interview is where the famed line from Waylon Jennings comes up, saying he’s going to burn down Holmes’ house after he asked if they’d teamed up because their individual careers had fallen off. While Cash and the others were able to laugh it off a bit and  give an earnest answer, Waylon Jennings famously responded: “I tell ya, one more point too, that if you ask another question like that, we’ll burn your home.” Iconic, right? But one of the most memorable parts of the interview comes near the end. Holmes asks all the men to name the best country song ever written. Kind of a daunting task if you ask me. “Just to finish this, the best country song you think was ever written.” It’s a tricky question to answer for us regular folks, so I can only imagine how these men must feel before delivering their answers. The men then went around and shared their thoughts. Willie Nelson said Hank Williams’ “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry,” Waylon Jennings said “Dreaming My Dreams” (a song he’d recorded a version of but was written by Allen Reynolds), and Johnny Cash named “I Love You Because” (a song written and originally released by Leon Payne but made famous by Jim Reeves). So what about Kris Kristofferson‘s choice? Kristofferson’s choice spoke volumes about who he respects, and his answer is one of the highest honors you can give to a friend. He went with “Big River,” which just so happened to be written and recorded by a man sitting to his right, Johnny Cash. “Maybe “Big River.” I’ve often thought that that may be the best song, country or otherwise.” Kristofferson was then asked to deliver a few bars of the tune, which he willingly did in a talking style manner: “I met her accidentally in St. Paul, MinnesotaAnd it tore me up every time I heard her drawl, Southern drawlThen I heard my dream went back downstream, cavorting in DavenportAnd I followed you, Big River, when you called…” Cash responded in a bashful manner: “Well, I’m overwhelmed because I wrote that song…” Johnny Cash released “Big River” on his 1958 album Johnny Cash Sings the Songs That Made Him Famous. While it never reached number one like so many of Cash’s classic songs, it did crack the Top 5, landing at number four. Of course, that doesn’t come close to telling the story of this song and how it became an undeniable piece of the country music canon, but Kris giving it the nod sure goes a long way. I mean, what an honor that your best friend and colleague named one of your songs the best country song ever written. That’s the kind of praise that would make you choke up and cry, but of course, we’d never see that from The Man in Black on camera. All of these answers are very cool to hear because they not only capture so many different decades of country music from their answers, but also highlight artists of all kinds of stardom. Check it out, the question occurs near the five-minute mark: Check out “Big River” while you’re here: The post Kris Kristofferson Once Called A Johnny Cash Song “The Best Country Song Ever Written”… With Cash Sitting Right Next To Him first appeared on Whiskey Riff.

Jelly Roll Plans To Build A 100-Acre Rehab Center On His Tennessee Property: “Intensive Programs For Therapy & Mental Health”

Jelly Roll has big plans for his plot of land in Tennessee. Jelly Roll and Bunnie Xo are always on the move and always have something they are working on. Jelly Roll, of course, stays busy with his music career, and Bunnie is gearing up to release her first book while they also raise kids, manage a farm, and continue to make a positive impact on others. During Jelly Roll’s most recent vlog, he brought Big Mike, Mike Majlak, and Nick Nayersina to his Tennessee farm and revealed some big plans for the massive piece of property. Jelly Roll admitted that when he goes out and rides his four-wheeler, there are still so many areas of his property that he’s yet to discover, and he often goes out and gets lost during his rides. At the beginning of the vlog, Jelly Roll shares with Majlak that there are 100 acres on the other side of a creek that runs through the property that Jelly Roll hopes to develop into a rehabilitation and addiction/mental health treatment center. “And then on the other side of the creek, I’ll show you when we get there, I’m going to develop like a 100-acre rehabilitation campus, for free. Where like, imagine drug addicts like you and like us, poor kids, like we’re just f***ing down, when life was kicking out a**. And now think about the resources that we have, that could have helped us so much in those moments. Like when I think about Ways2Well and Gary Brecka helping me do all of my bloodwork, I think about what I learned about on-site, I think about organic eating… Miles and them will do all the programming. You’ll have a traditional 28-day, 12-step style, but then we’ll have intensive programs as well for therapy and mental health…” Big Mike interjects and says: “Guest speakers?” To which Jelly Roll said, of course, there would be guest speakers, but he also hopes to have guests come in for an entire weekend, getting in the mud with those at the rehabilitation center. “Come on, baby, no, no deeper. Guest weekenders. Come in and spend the weekend with the boys, leave the phone and get in the trenches with the guys.”  This sounds like an incredible project that I hope we see come to life. @dailyjellyupdates Plans for 100 hectares ##jellyroll ♬ original sound – The Daily Jelly We know that Jelly Roll’s music moves and heals people in dark places or struggling through life, but to hear that Jelly Roll wants to physically help those out of the dark places is very cool. Jelly Roll has had his fair share of struggles with mental health and addiction, along with being an at-risk youth, which led him to being in and out of the correctional system for all of his youth and early adulthood. Now, Jelly Roll has truly turned his life around and is a symbol of those hoping for a better life. Once he had his daughter, Jelly Roll cleaned up his act and showed up for his little girl, and we’ve seen an even bigger transformation over the last year and a half, as he’s lost significant weight. Jelly Roll looks so healthy and happy mentally and physically. Mike Majlak is also the perfect person to share this plan with, as he’s overcome addiction. The New York Times bestseller became an opioid addict after trying his first OxyContin in his junior year of high school: “I knew it was a drug like anything else, but I had no idea what I was doing, and what this led to is, you know, an eight-year battle with opiate addiction. I slowly, but surely, became addicted to Oxies, watched friends of mine in their high school careers start to turn from, you know, middle-class kids to robbing pharmacies, robbing houses, stealing cars, robbing other dealers, going to jail. I started to lose friends to overdose pretty early on, and by the time I was out of high school, I was a full-blown addict.” But that was just the start of the struggles that Majlak faced. OxyContin was the gateway for him to get hooked on other harmful substances: “…we started to get into finding a substitute for that, which ended up being heroin. And for years after that, I sold heroin, was a heroin addict, as well as becoming, in the end of it, a crack addict.” However, Majlak turned his life around, just like Jelly Roll did, and now the two have bonded over overcoming the odds stacked against them. It was really cool to see Majlak’s reaction to Jelly’s news that he wanted to open a free rehabilitation center, and he was immediately on board. Jelly Roll will touch so many lives and will continue making a positive impact on the greater Middle Tennessee area when he gets this rehabilitation center up and running. Majlak put it best when reacting to this news: “Is there anything you can’t do, bro?” It appears so because everything that Jelly Roll has set his mind to, he’s done.
