IVF Isn’t Only Way to Treat Fertility Crisis

IVF Isn’t Only Way to Treat Fertility Crisis

There’s no doubt we have a fertility crisis. Currently, about 16% of married women in the U.S. struggle to get pregnant or avoid miscarriages, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Worldwide, about one in six people face infertility, according to the World Health Organization. “In the Trump administration, we want to make it easier for all couples to have babies, raise children, and start the families they’ve always dreamed about,” President Donald Trump announced Thursday. That’s wonderful. The plummeting U.S. birth rate has concerning implications for our future economy and culture—and of course, it’s heartbreaking for couples who want to have a child, for grandparents and aunts and uncles who long for little ones. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy even warned Thursday that the low birth rate poses “a national security threat.” “When my uncle was president, the fertility rate in this country was 3.5%,” he said. “Today it is 1.6%. The replacement rate—in other words, the amount of fertility that you need in order to keep your population even—is 2.1%. We are below replacement right now. That is a national security threat to our country.” RFK Jr: "When my uncle was president, the fertility rate in this country was 3.5 percent. Today it is 1.6 percent. The replacement rate — in other words the amount of fertility you need to keep your population even — is 2.1 percent. We are below replacement. That is a national… pic.twitter.com/jy1VDMD3dy— Aaron Rupar (@atrupar) October 16, 2025 But while IVF, or in vitro fertilization, gets much of the attention for solutions for infertility, it’s not the only option. Furthermore, IVF creates real moral dilemmas, particularly about the fate of embryos created and frozen, but never implanted. Trump announced Thursday that his administration would promote companies adding fertility insurance, akin to vision or dental insurance, as an option for employees. Currently, 27% of companies with 200 or more employees cover IVF, according to a 2024 Kaiser Family Foundation survey. IVF is insanely expensive—a single cycle, which may well not result in a live birth, costs between $12,000 to $25,000. The president, noting that the “No. 1 fertility drug used in IVF is currently 700% more expensive in the United States than the rest of the world,” announced a partnership with EMD Serono, a pharmaceutical company, that he said would reduce the cost of IVF drugs. But it’s important to recognize both the limitations of IVF and the fact that alternatives exist for couples struggling with infertility. According to Emma Waters, a policy analyst in the Center for Technology and the Human Person at The Heritage Foundation, “IVF has a success rate of merely 23%.” I asked @POTUS if his new plan to make IVF more accessible will provide equal access to root cause infertility treatments. "I think we're gonna do that," he told @DailySignal "The Department of Labor is issuing their intent today to open up the rule making process again for… pic.twitter.com/eZ9M1NyHRi— Elizabeth Troutman Mitchell (@TheElizMitchell) October 16, 2025 Another approach—generally called restorative reproductive medicine—can also help couples. Restorative reproductive medicine generally examines the root causes of a couple’s infertility. For instance, if a woman has endometriosis, that may be affecting her fertility. Addressing the endometriosis may then allow her to conceive. “One study published in 2024 found that 40% of couples previously diagnosed with infertility conceived naturally after undergoing RRM [restorative reproductive medicine]-based treatments compared with a 24% success rate with IVF. Another 2018 study found that 32.1% of women who had an average of two failed IVF cycles conceived naturally following targeted medical interventions with RRM,” writes Waters. Kennedy signaled the administration’s interest in addressing root causes during his remarks, saying, “President Trump is addressing the root causes through his MAHA agenda of reducing endocrine disruptors, the exposures, the chemicals that decrease fertility.” In addition to being generally more affordable, restorative reproductive medicine avoids the ethical dilemmas of IVF. In IVF, it is common to freeze multiple embryos but not implant all of them. According to Waters, generally about 15 embryos are created per cycle—and only 3% to 7% of those will be born alive. Many die or are frozen, perhaps indefinitely. Some countries do put limits on how many embryos can be created a cycle, according to the Charlotte Lozier Institute. In Germany, for instance, parents cannot create more than three.   Currently, the U.S. has no limitations—but a poll commissioned earlier this year by The Heritage Foundation found that 44% of American voters would support limitations on the number of embryos created, while only 30% opposed doing so. Fifty-one percent of American voters strongly or somewhat support requiring all embryos created to ultimately be implanted. Many Americans also don’t know much about the risks of IVF. Asked if they knew that research showed women who used IVF had “a higher risk of serious pregnancy complications, including preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, severe maternal morbidity, and Caesarean section,” 49% of American voters said they weren’t aware of any of those risks. Many Americans are also open to exploring restorative reproductive medicine. Over half of voters thought that doctors should first try to treat “the root issue which is causing the symptom of infertility” rather than IVF. Much of the media attention in recent years to the infertility crisis has been a focus on IVF. But it’s important for Americans, especially those struggling with infertility, to be made aware of other options. We do need to reverse our baby bust—but we can do so humanely, without abandoning embryos to a long-term frozen existence or death. They Help a Cat and Kittens Living in a Backyard, and Spring Back When They Realize There's One More

They rescued a cat and her kittens living in a backyard, and sprang back into action when they realized there was one more. BestFriendsFelinesIt all began when a kind-hearted woman noticed a ginger cat wandering around her relative's property. She followed the cat to a camper tucked away in the backyard. To her surprise, she found a litter of kittens living underneath. She thought there were only three, all of them terrified of humans. Determined to help, she contacted her local rescue group, Best Friends Felines. The rescue team quickly mobilized, and after several sleepless nights, they safely trapped the mother cat and four of her babies. The kittens were very scared and hissy at firstBestFriendsFelines"Just when we thought the rescue was complete, faint cries were heard the following night—one more kitten calling for their momma," the rescue shared.Without hesitation, the team returned to the backyard, determined to find the missing baby. They combed through the area, listening for the tiny meows, until they finally brought the last kitten to safety. They cuddled up together in a cat treeBestFriendsFelinesOnce settled in their foster home, the mother cat, named Margaret in honor of the finder's mother, began to relax and reveal her sweet personality. "She turned out to be a total sweetheart, social, affectionate, and full of love. She adores being near people."Reassured that her kittens were safe, Margaret followed her carers everywhere, soaking up every bit of affection. Margaret the mother cat turned out to be very friendly and affectionateBestFriendsFelinesWith no microchip and no one coming forward to claim her, Margaret's past remains a mystery. But her future is now bright and full of love. "Her kittens were tiny balls of fear (at first), all hisses, puffs, and little 'pops,' hence the nickname popcorn kittens."Slowly but surely, the kittens began to trust. Their wary stares softened into curious glances, and their playful personalities started to shine. BestFriendsFelinesWith encouragement and a stash of toys, their confidence grew day by day. They now race around the room, darting through tunnels, pouncing on feather toys, and scaling cat trees with fearless enthusiasm."They are at the perfect age—between five and twelve weeks—to learn that humans mean cuddles, safety, and love." The five kittens, with one half-hidden in the tunnelBestFriendsFelinesThe kittens have a dedicated foster volunteer who has assembled "an army of kitten cuddlers" to give each baby plenty of one-on-one attention. "They are ready to help these kittens blossom into the snuggly love bugs they know they'll become."The two girls, Elinor and Merida, are spirited and sassy, while their brothers, Fergus, Harris, and Hubert, are mischievous little rascals. BestFriendsFelinesThese days, Margaret lounges on the sidelines, watching her kittens tumble and wrestle, creating all sorts of antics. When playtime winds down, they all curl up together, filling the room with a sweet chorus of purrs.Once the kittens are fully weaned, Margaret will retire from motherhood and finally get to be the center of attention she's always deserved. After playtime, the kittens curl up with their mom for a nap in the cat treeBestFriendsFelines"She's smoochy, friendly, confident, and absolutely adores being around people. She'll happily follow you from room to room."Her kittens are growing into a lively and affectionate bunch. They're learning that humans bring food, toys, and love, and nothing makes them purr louder than a good cuddle. BestFriendsFelinesShare this story with your friends. CBS Finally Covers Jay Jones Texts....But Ties It to Young Republican Group Chat

With NBC having been the only broadcast network to (twice) mention on any of its flagship newscasts Democrat Virginia Attorney General candidate Jay Jones’s 2022 texts musing about murdering Republicans, it was a significant development when Friday’s CBS Mornings aired a full segment that went into detail about Jones’s texts. The problem? Half of the report concerned the anti-Semitic, racist, and sexist messages in a Young Republicans group chat.   Co-host Gayle King put the two on equal footing as part of a “rising level of offensive political rhetoric” that has been “getting a whole lot of attention right now.” On Jones, King downplayed the Jones texts by saying they had come from “a conservative magazine” while she stated the group chat was definitive (since it came from Politico, of course): Earlier this month, a conservative magazine revealed Democratic candidate, Jay Jones, sent texts suggesting that a Republican lawmaker should be shot and killed. Now, Jones has apologized for those comments, which came up repeatedly at a debate last night. At the same time, some younger Republican leaders are losing their jobs over their racist texts. CBS News campaign reporter Taurean Small — not any of the network correspondents who appear regularly on any of the main morning, evening, or Sunday shows — used Thursday night’s debate between Jones and Republican incumbent AG, Jason Miyares. Between clips of Miyares alluding to the texts, Small noted Miyares “led off Thursday’s debate with pointed criticism” of Jones, adding he “was referring to excerpts obtained by the National Review of text messages Jones sent in 2022 about then-Virginia House Speaker Todd Gilbert, a Republican.” After reading them aloud that Jones wanted to murder Gilbert and his young children because change only happens “when people feel pain personal[.]” Then came a portion of what he called an “apology” from Jones: “I’m sorry to Speaker Gilbert. I’m sorry to his family. I’m sorry to my family. And I’m sorry to every single Virginian.” Small made the pivot to the group chat: “It comes amid another controversy over political rhetoric. Earlier this week, Politico reporter on a drove of racist, anti-Semitic, and violent messages exchanged by leaders of the Young Republicans national political advocacy group.” He brought up the fact that the reporter behind this — Jason Beeferman — joined CBS News 24/7 earlier in the week: BEEFERMAN [on CBS News 24/7’s The Takeout with Major Garrett, 10/14/25]: It’s called the Young Republicans, but these are, you know, full grown adults 18 to 40 years old. SMALL: Jason Beeferman broke the story and joined The Takeout with Major Garrett to discuss. BEEFERMAN [on CBS News 24/7’s The Takeout with Major Garrett, 10/14/25]: They referred to black people as monkeys or the watermelon people. They called rape epic. They talked about the love of Hitler, with factions of their party or even supporting slavery. Small merged the two stories with Vice President JD Vance’s Wednesday appearance on The Charlie Kirk Show “seem[ing] to minimize [the group chat] comments, instead lashing out at Jones[.]” “But the Politico story suggested the group chat members weren’t just kids. One, it says, currently serves as a state senator in Vermont. Another was fired from his role as chief of staff in a New York state assemblelyman’s office after the story’s release. Another is a senior adviser in the U.S. Small Business Administration. Politico said he declined to comment,” he concluded. To see the relevant CBS transcript from October 17, click here.

In Loving Memory of Our Beloved Board Member, Karen Buchwald Wright

Through the years, MRC’s Board of Directors has been a blessing — a guiding constellation of visionaries whose wisdom and commitment have carried us through every challenge. Without the extraordinary men and women who have served on this Board, the MRC would not stand as the steadfast voice for truth it is today. Their counsel has been our compass, steering us toward greater impact and purpose. It is with profound sorrow that we share news of a great loss not only to the MRC but to our nation. On Wednesday, after a courageous and faithful fight against a determined cancer, our esteemed Board member Karen Buchwald Wright passed away at age seventy-one. As my father wrote in a note to the staff: “Her generosity was extraordinary. But the kindness she showed everyone, and the affection she held for everyone in our MRC family — I know: she told me — was boundless. If there were a half-staff day of mourning tradition at the MRC, today would be that day.” Karen was an incredible mother to her sons, Alex, Hunter, Andrew, and Sam, and a loving grandmother to several grandchildren. She is survived by her husband Tom, her mother Maureen, and many friends who cherished her deeply. She was preceded in death in 2021 by her son Hunter, who fought his own brave battle against cancer. Born on the Fourth of July in Mount Vernon, Ohio, the namesake of George Washington’s historic home, it is as if Providence itself marked her for a life of patriotic devotion. Her love for liberty and faith in America’s promise burned bright throughout her seventy-one remarkable years. Her father, Jim Buchwald, founded Ariel Corporation in 1966, designing a revolutionary gas compressor from his basement. In 2001, Karen became President and Chief Executive Officer, transforming that family startup into a global leader in energy technology, a living testament to her ingenuity, discipline, and belief in American exceptionalism. As Chairman and founder of The Ariel Foundation, she poured her generosity into parks, education, the arts, historic preservation, youth programs, and the revitalization of her beloved Mount Vernon. A 2018 recipient of National Review’s William F. Buckley Jr. Prize for Leadership in Supporting Liberty, Karen was celebrated as one of the most consequential conservative philanthropists of our time. Her compassion and civic devotion were praised far and wide, from national organizations to her hometown newspapers, the Mount Vernon News and Knox Pages. Her gifts to education, cancer research, and local preservation projects, including the Karen Buchwald Wright Reading Room at George Washington’s Mount Vernon, will enrich generations to come. For more than twenty years, Karen stood shoulder to shoulder with the MRC, first as a loyal donor, then as a trustee, and since 2020 as a dedicated member of our Board of Directors. She was a joy to work alongside, wise, gracious, and always focused on the mission. Her counsel, insight, and enthusiasm helped strengthen our research, expand our reach, and solidify our standing as America’s premier watchdog of the media. On a personal note, it was Karen who convinced me that I could take up the mantle from my father, just as she had done from hers. She reminded me that leadership is not inherited, it is earned — and that the best way to honor those who came before us is to keep building boldly for the future. That wisdom has stayed with me every day. Every MRC study, exposé, and success story bears her mark. Because of Karen’s leadership and generosity, the impact of your support has grown exponentially, fueling new victories for truth and accountability. Karen will forever be part of the MRC, her legacy woven into everything we do and everything we will accomplish. Our loss is heaven’s gain. May her kind and generous spirit shine eternal. Farewell, Karen. Your legacy lives forever in our hearts.
