Meet the OG Sea Serpent: The Giant Oarfish

Column SFF Bestiary Meet the OG Sea Serpent: The Giant Oarfish In a world full of weird and wonderful beings, the oarfish is right up there. By Judith Tarr | Published on September 29, 2025 A History of the Fishes of the British Islands, Jonathan Couch (1862). CCA 2.0 Comment 0 Share New Share A History of the Fishes of the British Islands, Jonathan Couch (1862). CCA 2.0 It never ceases to amaze me how rich this planet is with life, and how much of it fills the seas—and how little we still know about its full range and variety. One of the least explored regions of the oceans even now is the one between the light and the dark, from about 600 feet to 3500 feet down, between 200 and 1000 meters. This is the mesopelagic zone, where only 1% of incident light is able to penetrate, where the pressure becomes too intense for the human body to tolerate. Creatures of these depths and below sometimes rise to the surface, and occasionally wash up on shore. They’re seldom alive by then, and it can be hard to identify the remains. Even when they are living, a human swimming or riding in a boat may have to guess what they’re seeing. Before the invention of the underwater camera or the submersible (either manned or unmanned), there was no way to observe these animals in their native environment. Sailors out on the ocean told tales of enormous serpents that swam in the sea. Like the Kraken with its many arms and the Leviathan that swallowed Jonah, these myths and legends had a basis in fact. Leviathan, of course, was a whale, and the Kraken a giant squid. As for the sea serpent, there are a number of possibilities, including the venomous sea snake and various forms of eel including the conger and the moray. But the best candidate may be the giant oarfish. In a world full of weird and wonderful beings, the oarfish is right up there. It really is a giant: ten to thirty feet long (three to ten meters), with legends telling of oarfish that reach fifty feet (fifteen meters) or more. It’s a fish of many names: oarfish, ribbon fish, king of the herrings, and my favorite, the doomsday fish. In Japan it’s believed to foretell earthquakes; if an oarfish washes up on shore, that’s a warning to get to solid ground. It looks like a mythical beast: long, serpentine, ribbon-thin, with a blunt, short head crowned with spines, long narrow pectoral fins that trail beneath, and a dorsal fin that runs all the way from its head to its distant tail. The body is silvery with dark spots and a shimmer of bioluminescence, and the dorsal fin is usually red. That long narrow fin ripples constantly, propelling the fish through the water. It swims vertically, head up, mouth open, feeding on krill. It’s a filter feeder, and it travels up and down with its prey, rising as high as a few dozen feet below the surface, and descending to the borders of the abyss. Its body has evolved to survive in the crushing pressure of the deep. It has no scales; its skin is smooth and covered with a layer of guanine, its flesh is gelatinous (and apparently tastes disgusting), and its bones are soft and flexible. It’s able, like a lizard, to shed part of its tail if attacked, a process called autotomy, though unlike a lizard it won’t regrow the lost section. This is an elusive fish. It’s seldom seen alive, but it doesn’t appear to be rare, let alone endangered. It’s found in warmer waters all over the world, even in the Mediterranean, where River Monsters’ Jeremy Wade had a remarkable encounter with two in 2016. He’s fascinated by how they move: “It doesn’t flex the body, just the fins undulating like a wave.” It’s weirdly beautiful to watch. It’s a gentle fish. It’s not aggressive, it’s not dangerous; it doesn’t even have teeth. Despite its reputation as a harbinger of doom, it’s never harmed a human. It’s not hard to see why sailors would spin legends around this huge, serpentine creature. Its size and its strangeness stand out, even in an ocean full of giants.[end-mark] The post Meet the OG Sea Serpent: The Giant Oarfish appeared first on Reactor.

Microsoft Cuts Unit 8200’s Access to Cloud and AI Services After Gaza Mass Surveillance Revelations

If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties, subscribe to Reclaim The Net. Microsoft has blocked Israel’s Unit 8200 from using parts of its cloud and AI services after uncovering that the military intelligence unit was running a vast surveillance program on its Azure platform. The system had enabled the mass collection of Palestinian civilian phone calls, which were then stored, replayed, and analyzed. +972 Magazine and Local Call, revealed hat the agency was holding an enormous archive of intercepted communications inside a Microsoft data center in the Netherlands. Sources said the program, internally described by Unit 8200 as “A million calls an hour,” had accumulated around 8,000 terabytes of data. Shortly after the investigation appeared, the material was rapidly relocated out of Europe. The project took shape after a 2021 meeting between Microsoft chief executive Satya Nadella and Unit 8200’s commander at the time, Yossi Sariel. While the agency carried out its own interceptions, Microsoft’s cloud capacity allowed it to store the recordings for long periods and run advanced analysis on them. Intelligence officials confirmed the same system was later used during the assault on Gaza to assist with strike planning, in addition to its earlier focus on the West Bank. Microsoft responded to the revelations by launching an external review led by the law firm Covington & Burling. Its early findings led to a decision to disable the unit’s access to some services. Brad Smith, the company’s vice-chair and president, told staff in an email that Microsoft had “ceased and disabled a set of services to a unit within the Israeli Ministry of Defense,” including AI tools and cloud storage. He added: “We do not provide technology to facilitate mass surveillance of civilians.” The move followed growing pressure from employees and investors concerned about the company’s work for Israel’s military during the ongoing offensive in Gaza. Trump Administration Probes Banks Over Alleged Political and Religious Debanking Practices

If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties, subscribe to Reclaim The Net. Financial institutions are under heavy pressure from Washington as regulators demand answers about how and why they have been cutting off customers due to political or religious affiliations. The unusual, wide-ranging investigation is part of President Trump’s pledge to stop what has been labeled debanking. The Justice Department is working alongside federal regulators to determine if account closures or loan denials may have violated civil-rights protections, including the Equal Credit Opportunity Act. Agencies are reaching deep into the past, requesting records that span multiple years. According to people familiar with the plans, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. could begin issuing letters to major banks this week. The Wall Street Journal reported that the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency already confirmed it has contacted the nine largest banks under its watch, promising to “end the weaponization of the financial system.” Smaller lenders are not exempt. The Small Business Administration told more than 5,000 banks and financial firms to review old decisions and identify cases where individuals may have been denied service for political reasons. By December 5, those institutions are expected to offer account reinstatements and reconsider past applicants. The SBA letter, seen by the Journal, warns that failing to act could lead to “referral to the U.S. Attorney General for appropriate civil action.” The drive stems from an executive order Trump issued in August, “guaranteeing fair banking for all Americans.” It directed agencies to punish discrimination in financial services and authorize fines against violators. Trump has described the issue as personal, saying JPMorgan Chase and Capital One closed accounts tied to him and his family after he left office in 2021, and that Bank of America rejected his attempts to open new ones. Melania and Barron Trump were also reportedly impacted. Banks, for their part, deny targeting customers for their beliefs. They argue decisions often stem from risk assessments or regulatory expectations. In some cases, lenders said government pressure during the Biden administration led them to distance themselves from sectors such as firearms or fossil fuels to align with environmental, social, and governance priorities. Regulators are now reviewing whether their own guidance may have pushed banks into account closures. Bad Bunny at the Super Bowl: Brilliant Marketing, But an Awful Choice

Bad Bunny at the Super Bowl: Brilliant Marketing, But an Awful Choice

[LANGUAGE WARNING] The NFL announced that the halftime show at Super Bowl LX will be headlined by none other than Bad Bunny. We’re here to tell you the why, as well as what the rest of the media won’t tell you as they trip over themselves trying to cover the story. The why is simple enough: The league is expanding into Latin America and beyond, and Bad Bunny is a bonafide global superstar. With billions of downloads under his belt as well as a growing mainstream presence his booking, six years after appearing during Shakira and J-Lo’s halftime show, was a no-brainer. At least on paper. At first blush, it appears that the NFL booked Bad Bunny with little to no vetting beyond his musical success. It is far likelier that he was in fact fully vetted prior to being purposefully booked, proof evident that the league is still fully in the throes of the woke mind virus.  Bad Bunny’s endorsement of Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election (although of no effect in Pennsylvania and other swing states with significant Hispanic populations) proves him to be a politically divisive figure. He advocates for Puerto Rican independence and outright separation from the United States, a position favored by only 12% of the island’s population, while retreating to the comforts of mansions in Hollywood and elsewhere.  Then there is the matter of the rank hypocrisy of Bad Bunny playing the Super Bowl after allegedly refusing to tour in the mainland U.S. due to ICE raids, which supposedly compelled him to do a 30-date residency in Puerto Rico instead, a narrative that the media gleefully and uncritically advanced. For starters, ICE has an active presence in Puerto Rico, and has conducted raids in accordance with existing policy. Then there is the matter of the residency itself. Per multiple accounts, the residency was booked in 2023- when Joe Biden was allowing illegal aliens to flood into the country with nary an ICE agent to be seen. What ensued was a brilliant piece of marketing meant to ensure sell outs while saving on travel, logistics, and while avoiding the embarrassment of having to cancel concerts due to poor sales in cities such as Minneapolis. Linguistically, this may be a very interesting performance. Super Bowl LX will air on Comcast siblings NBC and Telemundo. Whereas NBC will likely let Bad Bunny’s obscene bleatings ride with a “Singing in non-English” caption, Telemundo’s censors will have to run for their lives. Consider a minuscule sampling of Bad Bunny’s lyrical offerings on, say, Safaera (ADVISORY): My cock is a fugitive and I want you to harbor it/ grab it like a bonga/ She popped a pill that made her horny/ She fucks in Audis, not in Hondas/ Hey, if I fuck you don’t call me/ This ain’t for you to fall in love- hey/ If your boyfriend doesn’t eat your asshole/ He might as well not eat at all And on Baticano: The night got kinky/ Three fingers in the pussy, in the asshole the pinky/ The bud, purple like Inky Winky/ Smack her in the ass and leave her like Po, hey/ I’ll hit it where she pees, and where she poops The worst part of all is that this performance will be hailed as proof evident that diversity is our greatest strength, and as a triumph of Latino culture. That’s a hard no on both counts.   Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl performance is not a triumph of the traditional “God, country, and family” values that Hispanics have espoused for centuries and brought to America since before the Revolutionary War. However, it is a high-water mark for an artificial and political Latino identity that seeks to perpetuate a permanent alien underclass forever separate and alien from the mainstream of American (captured) culture. To showcase this brain rot at such a quintessentially American institution as the Super Bowl is a sign of the extent to which our culture remains captured by the far left.
