Lyft driver's hilarious menu of 10 different types of ride options is pure genius

Lyft driver's hilarious menu of 10 different types of ride options is pure genius

Have you ever ridden in an Uber or a Lyft and had the driver talk a lot when you felt like being quiet? Or not say a word when you tried to make conversation? Or play music you found annoying? When you hop into a driver's car, it's a crapshoot what kind of ride you're going to have. But at least one Lyft driver is removing the mystery a bit by letting passengers choose. Facebook user Eric Alper shared a post that showed a photo of a piece of paper stuck on the back of a car's headrest that read:"Welcome to Cameron's car!!!""To ensure the best ride possible for you, I have prepared a menu of the various types of rides I offer. Just choose one (or don't, that's an option too) then sit back, relax and enjoy the ride. :)"Then it listed the 10 ride options Cameron offers:1. The Awkward Ride - You ignore this menu completely, then we will sit in silence for the remainder of the ride.2. The Funny Ride - I tell you jokes or entertaining stories from my life.3. The Silent Ride -4. The Creepy Ride - I don't say anything but I keep staring at you in the rearview mirror.5. The Karaoke Ride - We rock out to hits from the 80s, early 2000s or literally whatever you want.6. The Bubbles Ride - We blow bubbles the whole time.7. The Small Talk Ride - We talk about how crazy the weather's been lately and I ask if you caught the game last night. 8. The Therapy Ride - You vent to me about your problems and I listen.9. The Drunk Ride - You throw up in my car.10. The Cliche Ride - You ask me how long I've been driving for Lyft."OK, the Bubbles Ride sounds fun, but also maybe a little dangerous. And the Drunk Ride is the main reason I've never wanted to be a Lyft or Uber driver. I may have unintentionally taken a both a Therapy Ride and a Creepy Ride before. But seriously, the concept is fabulous. People often want something different in a ride depending on their mood, so the idea of having options to choose from is brilliant. The list also directly addresses the awkwardness that is often present when you're getting a ride from someone, so it makes a natural icebreaker and conversation starter—particularly helpful for folks who struggle with social anxiety. People in the comments loved it."I'm sure this wasn't the intention but this is a great example of disability accommodations that everyone can enjoy," wrote one person. "Being able to choose how much energy I expend is so helpful.""There should be a feature on both Uber and Lyft indicating what type of ride a rider wants or expects," wrote another. "I usually don't talk, but sometimes the driver keeps persisting and I feel awkward at times.""It clears the air, takes the awkwardness out of it, and establishes expectations for the ride, on both sides," wrote another. "Great idea."There are some more options I'd love to see added, though:The Pep Talk Ride - You need encouragement? I'll give you everything I've got to pump you up. The Tour Guide Ride - I share interesting details about places we pass and offer advice on cool things to do around the area. The Life Story Ride - We estimate how long your ride will be, set a timer, and each of us shares our life story for half the ride. (No questions, unless the ride goes longer.) The Deep Questions Ride - We skip the small talk and get right to the big stuff—meaning of life, existence of God, our place in the universe, etc.The High School Debate Ride - We pick a controversy, flip a coin to decide who will take which side, and debate regardless of our own personal views. The Pretend Persona Ride - We each make up totally fake names and personas and converse as them so we can chat without actually getting personal at all.So many possibilities. What kind of ride would you want to take? This article originally appeared on 04.21.22

Teenager creates eye-opening videos that shatter stereotypes surrounding autism and girls

The most recent data shows that about one in 68 children in the U.S. are affected by autism and boys are four times more likely than girls to be diagnosed.Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is marked by communication and social difficulties, sensory processing issues, and inflexible patterns of behavior. Almost everything that researchers have learned about the disorder is based on data derived from studies of boys. However, researchers are starting to learn that ASD manifests differently in girls. This has led many girls to be undiagnosed or misdiagnosed."The model that we have for a classic autism diagnosis has really turned out to be a male model," Susan F. Epstein, PhD, a clinical neuropsychologist said according to Child Mind."That's not to say that girls don't ever fit it, but girls tend to have a quieter presentation, with not necessarily as much of the repetitive and restricted behavior, or it shows up in a different way," Epstein added.Stereotypical ASD behaviors may also get in the way of recognizing the disorder in girls."So where the boys are looking at train schedules, girls might have excessive interest in horses or unicorns, which is not unexpected for girls," Dr. Epstein notes. "But the level of the interest might be missed and the level of oddity can be a little more damped down. It's not quite as obvious to an untrained eye."Girls with ASD are usually better at hiding their autistic behaviors, so they suffer in silence. See on Instagram Paige Layle, a 19-year-old eyelash technician from Ontario, Canada, has autism but because she's a social butterfly, most people don't realize she has the disorder."I get that a lot, that because I'm good-looking, nothing can be wrong with me — so I want to show that mental illness is diverse," Layle told BuzzFeed. To help people better understand how autism manifests in girls and women, Layle has made a series of videos on her TikTok page."I decided to start making videos because of an audio that was going all over TikTok that was making fun of autistic people. I hated it. I feel like many people don't understand how many people are autistic," she said.Layle's videos are eye-opening because they shatter some big myths about autism and show how difficult it can be to live with the disorder, especially if you don't know you have it. @paigelayle learn more about autism! :) i get many questions every day to make more vids about it, i will continue to show you guys! #feature #fup #fyp #featureme ♬ original sound - paigelayle In the first video, she explains how the initial research done on autism was only on boys or men."Girls usually end up showing different traits than guys do. Which is why it can take us years to get diagnosed. I was 15 when I got diagnosed and that's considered early for a girl."She also explains that girls often are diagnosed later because they are better at hiding autistic behaviors."This is something we call masking. Masking is basically just being like a really good actor. It's where you take traits that everyone else is showing and start portraying them as yourself. It's like a lot of copying going on. ... In your mind you don't think you're copying. You think that this is normal and everyone feels the same way you do.You basically feel like an alien and you're really good at hiding that. Which is why I don't seem autistic."In part two, she discusses the idea of being high-functioning. @paigelayle no such thing as high/ low functioning autism!!! it’s just how YOU perceive us. not about how we’re affected. #feature #featureme #fup #fyp ♬ original sound - paigelayle "Get high-functioning and low functioning out of your vocabulary. It doesn't help anybody. I know you may think that saying 'Oh like you're high-functioning' is compliment. It's not a compliment. It's also like a reminder that I'm just masking, and it's so hard.Masking is the most exhausting thing in the world... 'High-functioning' is basically a label that you can use to be like 'Your autism doesn't affect me that much.' But I'll tell you that everyone you think is high-functioning is greatly affected by their autism."In part three, Paige discusses common autistic traits that girls have. @paigelayle more on special interests later ☺️ #feature #autism #fyp #fyp #featureme ♬ original sound - paigelayle "I am overly social. I give way too much eye contact. I'm really good in social situations. It's also very common for girls with autism to have other mental disabilities or mental disorders as well. I have seven and one of the main ones is OCD.All of these mental illnesses stem from having autism. But OCD, anxiety, and depression are very common, especially in girls. Just the feeling that the world needs rules for you to understand it. That's why a lot of autism special interests include things like anatomy, the human body, psychology, just figuring out how the world works is our way to figure out how to live in it."In part four, Paige discusses the topic of masking. @paigelayle ahhh masking. can’t live with you, can’t live without you. #feature #fup #fyp #featureme #autism ♬ original sound - paigelayle "When you're in the autistic closet and you are not known to be autistic yet ... you like subconsciously know that you're weird and you don't know how to act or how to be.It's like the way you walk, the way you talk, the way you wear your hair, like your mannerisms. Like everything you say. Everything you think. Everything you think that you enjoy. It's all what you are accustomed to from your peers.I've been diagnosed for four years and I'm still trying to figure out who I am and what I actually like to do. You just get to used to creating this mask that when it's like 'Hey, you can take it off,' It's like what the frick is underneath it? I don't know what's going on."This story originally appeared on 03.11.20

The note said she didn't deserve her promotion. Here's her mic-drop response.

I was promoted a few weeks ago, which was great. I got a lot of nice notes from friends, family, customers, partners, and random strangers, which was exciting. But it wasn't long until a note came in saying, “Everyone knows you got the position because you're a girl." In spite of having a great week at a great company with great people whom I love, that still stung, because it's not the first time I've heard it.Every woman who works in tech — heck, likely every woman on Earth — hears “because you're a girl" dozens, if not thousands, of times in her life.It starts young, of course:Why can't I join that team? Because you're a girl. Why can't I study physics? Because you're a girl. Then, the comments age with you.Why can't I manage that project? Because you're a girl. Why can't I join that group? Because you're a girl. And after you've reached any level of attainment in a profession you love, the comments are used to minimize your success. Why did you get that award? Because you're a girl. Why were you chosen to participate in that class? Because you're a girl.Like so many women before me, I have shaken off the comment.I've gotten angry. I've gotten sad. I've doubted myself and my abilities. I've ignored it entirely. I've challenged it. I've recruited support from men and women I respect. Yet every time it stays there in the back of my mind, screaming for attention after every failure or setback. But today is the day I've decided to change that.I did, in fact, get the job because I'm a girl.A girl who was called "bossy" growing up.A girl who wasn't afraid to play with the boys.A girl who didn't hesitate to raise her hand if she knew the answer.A girl who stood up for other kids.A girl who was always the first one to volleyball practice and the last to leave.A girl who was told she was too assertive and aggressive to advance in her career.A girl who went to MIT anyway.A girl who asked her company to do more on diversity and inclusion and won't stop pushing until it's truly remarkable.A girl who has made big mistakes, both personal and professional.A girl who swings for the fences even when no one is watching.A girl who puts in hours when other people are asleepA girl who tells young girls how smart and strong they are.A girl who hates to lose. And a girl who won't stand silently while people still use “because you're a girl" as any limitation for girls who want to grow, challenge the status quo, and be something, anything, greater than society tells them they could or should. So yeah. I guess you could say I got my job because I'm a girl, but not for any of the reasons you might think. This story first appeared on the author's Medium and is reprinted here with permission. This article originally appeared on 04.14.17
