Megan Moroney Reveals The Brutally Honest Warning She Gave The Guy Who Inspired “Wish I Didn’t”
He can’t say she didn’t warn him.
This past Friday, Megan Moroney released a new song called “Wish I Didn’t,” from her forthcoming album Cloud 9, which was accompanied by a very cinematic music video inspired by the 2005 movie starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, “Mr. & Mrs. Smith.”
You might also recognize her co-star, Dylan Efron, whose last name you probably recognize because he is the brother to Hollywood actor Zac Efron, notably of High School Musical fame. Dylan has been on reality shows like Season 3 of Peacock’s The Traitors, and more recently he finished in fourth place on Season 34 of Dancing with the Stars, alongside his professional partner Daniella Karagach, which is what I know him from, but he did a great job in this video and it sounds like they got their hands dirty in terms of doing some of the more involved stunts on their own.
Megan wrote the song with Emily Weisband, Hillary Lindsey and Luke Laird, and it definitely leans into her pop sensibilities and sounds like a radio hit for sure, and during an appearance on Apple Music’s Zane Lowe Show, she opened up about the inspiration behind it… and it’s pretty much exactly what you think.
She explained that she was dating a guy who was starting to show some early red flags, and she sat him down to have the conversation that must be incredibly unique to dating a famous musician… there will be songs whether it ends well or not:
“I was just kind of dating this guy, and it was one of those moments where a little bit of a red flag had popped up. And I had warned him, I was like, ‘Don’t do this. If you’re gonna act like I think you’re gonna act, just don’t. Let’s handshake and call it a day.’
I literally had the conversation, like, ‘There will be songs. And I’m warning you, because I don’t wanna do this to you if you think this is gonna go any differently than me just walking away with you being unscathed after.’
It’s that aspect, but it’s also, like, I was just in a funny mood that day and kind of making fun of the fact that like, that’s probably one of the top three things guys think about when they’re dating me. Like, oh, am I gonna get a song written about me? And so it was kind of just like leaning into that and kind of making fun of the situation that I have created for myself as an artist and a songwriter who overshares.”
And in terms of the mystery man who is the subject of “Wish I Didn’t”? Well, he’s long gone…
“Long gone.”
I guess he can at least have this song to show for himself, though I’m not so sure that’s a good thing…
Megan is very open about how much her dating life inspires her music and becomes the subject matter she often sings about, but as long as she gives them a warning first, I’d say all’s fair…

The video itself is a play on the 2005 movie starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” and we do see Megan in a more mature, daring look in parts of the video in terms of the all black leather look, which you can get a full look at in the post from TooFaced cosmetics (she wore their makeup in the video).
It’s not the glittery, fluffy pageant dresses she usually wears onstage, but she looks incredible:
