Former CNN media reporter Brian Stelter expressed his concern during a Tuesday evening interview on his old network, telling “CNN NewsNight” host Abby Phillip that he expected media to be “punished” if former President Donald Trump returned to the White House. The former “Reliable Sources” host was reacting to comments made by MSNBC anchor Rachel Maddow about a second Trump term — namely that she worried Trump “plans to build camps” for his critics and political enemies. Stelter referred to Maddow’s claim as “speculative non-fiction” but argued that it was reasonable to think that Trump — who has long had a contentious relationship with the press — might do something to retaliate against outlets with which he had a particular beef. “We use the words that Trump and his allies have said, and we use them to talk about the future. Jail, of course, is an extreme part of the spectrum. Imprisonment is an extreme part,” Stelter said. Think about government pressure on media companies. Think about other forms of government interference. There are a lot of pressure points and frankly, Rachel Maddow is not the only member of the media thinking about this,” Stelter continued. “I’ve talked to the heads of news organizations, CEOs, and media companies that are thinking this through, not in dramatic fashion, not because they’re afraid of going to jail, but because they want to know what could Trump do to use his power in the second term to punish the media.” Stelter was among the first let go when now-former CNN chief Chris Licht took over in the wake of Jeff Zucker’s abrupt exit from the network, and prior to that had often found himself at odds with the Trump White House.

Republicans in Congress are investigating whether the State Department played a role in a Ukrainian NGO’s so-called “Enemies list” of GOP lawmakers, activists, and news outlets that included The Daily Wire and two of its commentators. Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) and Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) sent a letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Wednesday raising concerns about U.S. support of Anatoly Bondarenko and the group he founded, the Data Journalism Agency (TEXTY), that recently published a study with the list. The study is titled “Rollercoaster: From Trumpists to Communists. The forces in the U.S. impeding aid to Ukraine and how they do it,” and it contains the names of 338 individuals and 76 organizations, including Daily Wire hosts Ben Shapiro, Jordan Peterson, Michael Knowles, Matt Walsh, and Brett Cooper. Vance and Gaetz, who are also listed, said the study is “largely an excuse to smear a large group of Americans who have been skeptical of aid to Ukraine” and is “being broadcast as a part of a coordinated media strategy that has all the hallmarks of a U.S.-targeting influence operation.” The lawmakers said they want to assess whether there is a violation of U.S. law, noting that “all Americans can agree that our tax dollars should not be supporting direct attacks on U.S. persons based upon reasonable political disagreement” and requested various records by June 28. A request for comment has been sent to the State Department. The Daily Wire will update this story if a response is given. Rep. Jim Banks (R-IN), who is running for a Senate seat, went viral last week with a post to X raising the alarm about what he called an “Enemies list” from TEXTY. The lawmaker said he was included in the list, and his office would reach out to others who were also in the database. Senator Raphael Warnock (D-GA) compared former President Donald Trump’s supporters — particularly evangelical Christians — to segregationists and slavery advocates during a recent interview, suggesting that they must be answering to a different God. Warnock joined host David Remnick for a lengthy conversation that aired over the weekend on “The New Yorker Radio Hour,” and Warnock insisted that the political fight against Trump was also a “moral and spiritual” battle. It was Remnick who raised the question about pro-Trump evangelicals and what he called a “movement” among them to call for becoming a “Christian Nation with laws instituting Christian principles.” “The enormous number of people of earnest faith, who look at someone who lives the way he does, who’s now been convicted of multiple felonies, how do you analyze that?” Remnick asked. Warnock responded by suggesting that evangelical Trump supporters were no different from the Christians who had at one time supported either slavery or segregation. He says it a few times, and in his speeches — he says, ‘I am so disappointed in the American church. What kind of people worship there? Who really is their God?’ That’s the question for this moment. ‘Who really is their God?’ Particularly when we’ve been told by a lot of folks on the far right for years that their focus is family values.” Warnock went on to attack evangelicals for their position on “matters of private morality,” such as sex and gender issues. “And those same people now are lined up behind Donald Trump,” Warnock kept hammering the point. “A man who has, had several marriages who found himself caught up in the crosshairs of, his decision to having an affair with a porn star, and these same folks who raised these issues around family values and private morality are the ones who are speaking as if he is the Messiah of God. I think the question that Doctor King asked all those years ago is especially relevant at this moment: ‘Who really is their God?'”

The Biden administration has reportedly released 72% of migrants who entered the country unlawfully through the San Diego border sector despite the administration’s supposed crackdown on the border. More than 4,900 migrants have been released out of the more than 6,800 migrants border authorities encountered in the Southern California border sector between June 5 and Tuesday, according to internal federal data reported by the New York Post. The San Diego area is one of the busiest for illegal border crossings. The internal federal data comes just days after a Border Patrol guidance document leaked showing agents in the San Diego area were advised to release migrants from all but six of the more than 100 countries in Africa, Asia, Australia, and Europe into the U.S. rather than deport them. Only adult migrants from Georgia, Moldova, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan will be immediately sent to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for deportation, the memo said. “It’s all smoke and mirrors,” Manny Bayon, the National Border Patrol Council President for the San Diego border sector, told the Post. One issue is that some of these countries are reluctant to accept migrants back. “We have to have cooperation with the countries where we’re sending them back,” Bayon said. The leaked memo was reportedly distributed to border authorities in San Diego after President Joe Biden’s executive order ostensibly cracking down on the southern border. Biden’s order announced last week will shut down the southern border when more than 2,500 migrants cross illegally every day for seven days in a row. Once triggered, the order will remain in effect until two weeks after daily crossings drop to an average of 1,500 a day for seven days in a row, according to officials.
