Residents Ordered To Evacuate After 5,000-Gallon Oil Tanker Catches Fire

Residents in a DeSoto, Texas, neighborhood had to evacuate Friday after a 5,000-gallon oil tanker caught fire. “Numerous firefighters and emergency personnel are on the scene in DeSoto, Texas, after a 5,000-gallon oil tanker caught fire, producing large flames and thick, black smoke. Emergency officials have asked nearby residents to evacuate due to the fear of a possible explosion,” Rawsalerts wrote. “The cause of the fire is under investigation. The city says the truck was carrying diesel fuel. At this time, there is no word on any injuries,” the post added. DeSoto Fire Chief Bryan Southard said the driver of the tanker noticed smoke coming from her engine while stopped at the intersection of Parkerville Road and Cockrell Hill Road. The engine fire soon spread into the cab and then toward the 5,000-gallon tank full of diesel fuel. The driver was able to escape without injury before the fire consumed the truck. Southard said when firefighters arrived they had to use foam to put out the fire because water has little effect on flammable liquids. He said they exhausted their supply of foam and called in help from fire departments in nearby Dallas and Duncanville to assist. MELTED! We’re glad certainly that the driver was safe, and all the neighbors and homes were safe too,” said DeSoto resident Scott Hulbert, according to WFAA.  Crews are battling a tanker fire in DeSoto on Cockrell Road and Parkerville Road. Residents in the area have been told to evacuate. pic.twitter.com/5NRG4EpEqX — FOX 4 NEWS (@FOX4) June 7, 2024 Per WFAA: Desoto Fire Department said the fire started in the engine while the driver was sitting at a red light. Then, it quickly spread to the cab and to the compartments carrying diesel fuel. They said no other cars were involved in the fire, and that the driver of the tanker was not injured. “When you’re dealing with flammable liquids like that, it really creates a lot of issues because water on flammable liquid doesn’t do any good. Foam becomes our best friend,” said Desoto Fire Chief Bryan Southard. He told WFAA that crews used foam to try and blanket the fuel and get the fire under control. “One of our biggest concerns is we have storm drains with runoff, so we’re trying to control the runoff,” Southard said. “We don’t want the diesel getting down into the storm drains.”

Suspected Islamists kill dozens in attack on eastern Congo villages

BENI, Democratic Republic of Congo — Suspected Islamist rebels killed at least 38 people in an overnight attack on villages in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, two district officials and a civil society leader said Saturday. Local civil society leader Justin Kavalami blamed members of the Allied Democratic Forces for the attack. The ADF, alleged to be behind another village assault that killed at least 16 people earlier this week, originates from neighboring Uganda. Now based in eastern Congo, it has pledged allegiance to Islamic State and mounts frequent attacks, further destabilizing a region where many militant groups are active. Armed men used guns and machetes to attack residents of villages in Beni territory, in North Kivu province, overnight Friday, local official Fabien Kakule told Reuters. District official Leon Kakule Siviwe said the death toll stood at 38 and said the recent surge in violence was due to the attackers taking advantage of a low security presence. They came to "slaughter the population when there were no soldiers in place," he told Reuters. It was not possible to reach the ADF for comment.

4 construction workers killed in Kenya near Somalia border

NAIROBI, Kenya — Gunmen in northern Kenya fatally shot four construction workers at a hospital site near a refugee camp and the border with Somalia where a militant group is active, police said Saturday. A group of eight workers were resting Friday when they were attacked, leaving four shot dead at close range, a police official who declined to be named due to the sensitivity of the issue told The Associated Press. The other four workers escaped unharmed, the official said. The hospital construction site is near Kenya’s largest refugee camp, Dadaab, and the border with Somalia where the al-Shabab militant group is based. Garissa county has in the past been attacked by al-Shabab militants who cross through the porous border. Local police say the Friday attack may have been staged by an armed group that had warned the contractor to stay away from the area, which they consider their turf. Northern Kenya has in recent days seen violence that has left several people dead in different locations. On Wednesday, police at the Mandera border point recovered an improvised explosive device that was about to detonate. Last week, two herders were killed at a watering point, also in the Mandera area, by gunmen. In April, five people were killed in a donkey cart explosion in Elwak town. The government says security operations in northern Kenya have been increased. The recent attacks have forced the government to suspend plans to reopen the 698-kilometer (434-mile) Kenya-Somalia border that was closed in 2011, although illegal crossings are still rampant.

A Good Start! Stanford Protesters Charged with Felonies

Is the pendulum swinging? On Wednesday, 13 Stanford students occupied the president’s and Provost’s offices and issued a list of demands. The protesters barricaded themselves inside and would only leave once their demands were met. They didn’t get what they wanted, but they got a lot more than they expected. The Demands “First, we demand […] The post A Good Start! Stanford Protesters Charged with Felonies appeared first on www.independentsentinel.com.

WATCH: Footage Emerges Of Israel Rescuing Hostages From Palestinian Terrorists

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) released video footage from their rescue operation that saved four hostages who were kidnapped eight months ago by Hamas. Israeli special forces on the ground were supported by airstrikes as they raided two Hamas locations in central Gaza, rescuing three Israelis at one location and finding the fourth hostage at the second location. The hostages have been identified as Noa Argamani, 25; Almog Meir Jan, 21; Andrey Kozlov, 27; and Shlomi Ziv, 40. All four hostages are in good condition, according to the IDF. The IDF released footage from both locations showing the hostages boarding Israeli helicopters and flying out of Gaza. This morning (Saturday), in a joint IDF, ISA and Israel Police (Yamam) complex, special, daytime operation in Nuseirat, four Israeli hostages were rescued. (@MarinaMedvin) June 8, 2024 “They are back home in Israel. They are alive; they are well,” said IDF spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari. “They will undergo medical examination and will soon be reunited with their families in the hospital.” CLICK HERE TO GET THE DAILYWIRE+ APP The mission marks the most successful hostage rescue operation for the IDF since Hamas captured at least 250 people from Israel during its October 7 terrorist attack. In February, the IDF rescued two Israeli hostages — Fernando Marman, 61, and Louis Har, 71 — who were being held by Hamas in Rafah. The rescue mission had been planned by the IDF for weeks, according to Hagari, who added that during the rescue operation, Israeli forces were under fire from Hamas while in the buildings and on their way out of Gaza with the hostages. “They risked their lives to save the lives of our hostages. This is what we do in Israel,” he said. Hagari added that the IDF will continue to fight to rescue the 120 hostages who still remain in Gaza, which include men, women, and children. Hamas has murdered at least 60 hostages since its October 7 attack, according to Israel. Only 19 of the bodies have been brought back to Israel from Gaza. Zach Jewell contributed to this report.

Donald Fagen’s Best Song On Each Of His Solo Albums

After covering the best song on every Steely Dan album, it just felt right to take a stroll over to Donald Fagen’s solo catalog. During the twenty years between Steely Dan albums, Donald Fagen kept Steely Dan fans happy with new material similar to the music they all grew up with during that great 70s run of Steely Dan albums. His first solo album The Nightfly was released only a year after Gaucho. Fans would have to wait another eleven years before the Kamakiriad follow-up was released in 1993. Instagram Bans “Gender-Critical” Charity Ahead of UK Elections

If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties, subscribe to Reclaim The Net. Instagram has permanently banned the account of Sex Matters, a UK-based charity that advocates for the preservation of single-sex services to ensure privacy, dignity, safety, and choice, especially for women and girls. Founded to maintain clarity regarding sex in law, policy, and language, Sex Matters uses its social media presence, notably an Instagram account under the handle @SexMattersOrg, to spread its message and uphold what it describes as human rights based on “gender critical” principles. These principles assert the immutability and importance of biological sex. The account’s suspension occurred on June 3, with Instagram citing a violation of its community guidelines. Sex Matters responded swiftly, appealing the decision within minutes only to be met with a quick rejection. Reacting to the ban, Sex Matters’ leadership, including CEO Maya Forstater and Chair Naomi Cunningham, urgently contacted Instagram’s support team. Their communication emphasized the charity’s legal and ethical foundations, including Forstater’s successful 2021 legal challenge against workplace discrimination over her views. In a letter to Instagram, the charity highlighted the importance of its social-media presence, stating, “Our social-media accounts are a key part of our campaigning activity on our charitable objectives.” The organization’s board of trustees, composed of lawyers, academics, and other experts, oversees its social media output, ensuring alignment with its charitable mission. In their appeal, Sex Matters urged Instagram to reconsider its decision, stating, “We urge Instagram to reinstate our account as a matter of urgency.” This clampdown coincides with a crucial time as the UK approaches a general election, significantly impacting Sex Matters’ campaign. The charity has expressed grave concerns about the effect of this ban on their ability to engage and inform their audience during this period.
