The American Dream Is Dying. HUD Secretary Scott Turner Aims to Revive It.

The American dream is in crisis. A study published by Pew Research last year found that only 42% of adults under 50 say the American dream is still attainable. The belief is bipartisan: Only 38% of Democrats under 50 and 48% of Republicans under 50 believe it is possible to achieve the American dream. President Donald Trump felt the storm gathering. He turned heads when he descended down the golden escalator of Trump Tower in 2015 and thundered that “sadly, the American dream is dead.” He captured that lightning in a bottle not once but twice, observing that under former President Joe Biden and former Vice President Kamala Harris, “you don’t hear about the American dream anymore—it’s dead.” And what’s the American dream without the white picket fence? Generations of Americans have grown up believing that owning a home has been a key tenet of living the American dream, but homes are increasingly unaffordable. For this monumental task, Trump has tapped Housing and Urban Development Secretary Scott Turner. Turner joined “The Signal Sitdown” this week to discuss a housing crisis that isn’t just about houses—it’s about the soul of our homeland. One reason why young Americans and their families feel the American dream slipping away is the increasing unaffordability of a home for the average American. From the 1960s to the 1980s, the average house cost about three times the yearly median wage in America. Today, the average house costs seven times the yearly median wage. Turner told The Daily Signal that “there’s several factors” behind this trend.  “The regulatory environment is crippling building,” Turner said. “Developers find it more difficult to develop, more difficult to build. And so, at [the Department of Housing and Urban Development], we’ve been very intentional from day one of taking inventory of our regulatory environment and the regulations that we have.” Cuts to those regulations have already started, with the Trump administration working to undo the Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing rule, a Biden-era regulation that placed federal restrictions on using local land to build housing. Illegal immigration has been another factor. “When you look at our country and how between 10 and 20 million people came into our country illegally,” Turner continued, “this has hindered our housing industry and caused housing prices to go up.” To no surprise, the average rent has nearly doubled over the same time period housing has more than doubled, even when adjusted for inflation. It’s a double blow for young Americans and their families hoping to buy a home. Higher housing costs force young Americans into renting, and high rents means less savings to someday afford a house. The result? Many Americans have been forced to delay buying a home. In 2008, the average age of a first-time homebuyer was about 30, and it had been that way for three decades. Less than two decades later, and the average age of a first-time homebuyer is 38—an all-time high. Turner understands that having a country of renters is much different than a country of owners.  “The American people, not only are they the one priority, they’re the only priority when it comes to HUD-funded housing,” Turner said.  “We have to continue to work hard to make sure that those costs come down. When we came into this administration, our fiscal house was not in order,” Turner claimed. “The president and this administration under his leadership is getting our fiscal house in order.” Putting the nation’s fiscal house in order is necessary “to help people live lives of self-sustainability, to help people to achieve their American dream and home ownership, and to help people, really, to live out their God-given potential,” the HUD secretary added. “The American home is the American dream,” Turner said, “and at HUD we have the heart to help every American achieve the American dream.” The post The American Dream Is Dying. Largest Downward Jobs Revision Mostly Came on Biden’s Watch, Raises More Questions About Embattled Federal Agency

The federal Bureau of Labor Statistics released the largest downward jobs revision in its history Tuesday, raising further questions about the embattled federal agency. The downward revision for the 12-month period ending March 2025 suggests the economy added about half as many jobs per month as previously thought. The move comes amid already hefty criticism from the White House, where President Donald Trump has nominated Heritage Foundation Chief Economist EJ Antoni to head the bureau. The bureau’s report estimated that the U.S. economy actually gained 911,000 fewer jobs over the 12 months ending March 2025 than previously reported. “This staggering 911,000 downward revision in jobs data marks the largest such correction in history, underscoring the urgent need for change and new leadership at the Bureau of Labor Statistics,” Richard Stern, acting director at Heritage’s Institute for Economic Policy Studies, told The Daily Signal in a statement Tuesday. “BLS must refine its data collection methods to produce more accurate numbers.” “Notably, 10 of the 12 months encompassed by massive errors in this report fall under the Biden administration, casting a stark spotlight on the economic challenges and persistent headwinds inherited from the previous administration’s policies, which have profoundly impacted hardworking Americans,” Stern added. The largest downward revisions came in leisure and hospitality (176,000 jobs), professional and business services (158,000 jobs), and retail trade (126,200 jobs). This revised number of almost 76,000 fewer jobs per month takes away more than half of the monthly gains that were originally reported. The revision comes as the White House is said to be preparing a report laying out alleged shortcomings of Bureau of Labor Statistics data, the Journal reported. Trump fired former bureau Commissioner Erika McEntarfer last month, following a weak jobs report. He nominated Antoni to replace her. The president has repeatedly criticized the BLS. “The Economy is BOOMING under ‘TRUMP,’ but the Bureau of Labor Statistics has RIGGED the numbers to make the Republicans, and ME, look bad,” he posted on Truth Social last month. Cody Sargent, Heritage’s director of media and public relations, noted that this downward revision is “the largest error in BLS history.” “Sure seems like firing the commissioner was warranted,” he quipped. Ghoulish: Media Turn Charlotte Stabbing into Another ‘Republicans Pounce’ Story

The corporate media have finally been shamed into covering the brutal stabbing of 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zaruska by a mentally ill black man in Charlotte, and predictably, they’ve turned it into a “Republicans pounce!” story. In between gasps of horror that the Trump administration has “seized on” the story, print outlets and TV talking heads have been hard at work identifying the real culprit of the gruesome murder: insufficient public health funding. First, let’s address this idiotic comment by CNN’s Abby Phillip on Monday: “People are murdered every single day… but this particular one, I’m trying to understand why this has become such a flashpoint on the right.”  This story matters because it exists at an intersection between two major political topics that have long dominated policy discourse in the America. Iryna Zaruska, a Ukrainian refugee, came to this country seeking safety from the death and destruction wrought by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine — only to be done in by a violent felon who was released onto America’s streets by a social justice ideologue. Zaruska’s killer, Decarlos Brown, was released onto the streets after a January, 2025 incident with police, despite his extensive criminal record and diagnosed mental illness. The question being asked is, why was he not already behind bars?  Of course, that question is rather inconvenient for a corporate media who are currently hard at work trying to label the Trump administration’s crime crackdown as unnecessary and authoritarian. So here’s how they’ve chosen to cover the incident instead:

In what has become a predictable and boring exercise, the legacy news media freak out over a Supreme Court action that puts a stop to activist obstruction of President Trump’s agenda. This time, on immigration, with the added bonus of a freakout over the president’s "Chipocalypse Now” meme. The tone was set early by CBS’s John Dickerson, perhaps trying to get as much off his chest as possible before Kenneth Weinstein gets settled in as ombudsman and/or/if/when Bari Weiss takes charge of the news division: PAGING KENNETH WEINSTEIN: In a wild tease on the Evening News, CBS's John Dickerson accuses SCOTUS of enabling "indiscriminate immigration sweeps in Los Angeles" pic.twitter.com/lJVnR476se — Jorge Bonilla (@BonillaJL) September 9, 2025 JOHN DICKERSON: The Supreme Court clears the way for indiscriminate immigration sweeps in Los Angeles, as ICE agents begin a crackdown in the Boston area. The actual item filed by White House Correspondent Weijia Jiang was far tamer than Dickerson’s tease, but included this appeal to the sanctity of government crime data, an unrebutted sound bite from the governor of Massachusetts, and a reference to the Los Angeles ICE raids as “roving”, a term best suited for the marauding gangs ICE will likely encounter along the way: WEIJIA JIANG: But a new analysis from the CBS News data team found violent crime in Chicago is currently down 20% compared to the same period last year, which includes a 31% decrease in homicides and 16% decline in aggravated assaults. In Massachusetts, the governor objected to any federal intervention. MAURA HEALEY: I think a lot of this has to do with political theater and attempts to distract from Trump's failing agenda. JIANG: Tonight, The White House is responding to that Supreme Court ruling that lifts restrictions on roving ICE raids in Los Angeles, saying it reaffirms that, quote: “lower activist judges are trying to impede the President from lawfully carrying out the People's agenda.” Unsurprisingly, Jiang’s item included no mention of the many illegal alien child predators detained by ICE in Massachusetts' sanctuary cities, often released back into the public on cashless bail. ABC compressed their usual hysterics into a World News Tonight brief, with a greater focus on the meme, and with Chief Justice Correspondent Pierre Thomas amplifying criticism of the ICE raids as “racial profiling”. TOM HOMAN: It's a multitude of factors to establish reasonable suspicion. But if an illegal alien- if an illegal alien has an MS-13 tattoo on his head, that is certainly going to be one of the factors that we consider. Personal aviation vehicles have officially hit the public market.The same inventor who brought the "Star Wars" speeder bike to life earlier this year just delivered what appears to be the next step in transportation.'This marks a new era in aviation.'Tomasz Patan says his new all-electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft is designed for recreational and safe use.The company, called Jetson, has released Jetson ONE, a new vehicle that seems to be part hovercraft, part helicopter, and all fun.Described by the company as a "formula one racing car for the sky," the aircraft does not require a pilot license, despite its use of eight motors and propellers. "This marks a new era in aviation, where incredibly fun and easy-to-operate personal flying machines become accessible to anyone who wants to realize the dream of flight," the company wrote on X.The Italian company recently made its first delivery, boasting that its new billionaire pilot took less than an hour to complete training on the unique vehicle.RELATED: This 'Star Wars' vehicle is now real, and you don't need a license to fly one Founder of Oculus and Anduril Industries, Palmer Luckey was indeed that lucky new pilot, reportedly completing the training faster than any civilian the company has seen.While Luckey had no problem piloting the vehicle, consumers may be wondering if they need a wallet comparable to the tech entrepreneur’s in order to afford one. While new owners won't exactly need to be a billionaire to get their hands on the Jetson ONE, it’s not exactly cheap, either.At a price similar to a luxury car, the Jetson ONE requires an $8,000 down payment with a total price tag of $128,000. Customers will not get their aircraft until 2027, though, as the entire 2025 and 2026 production runs have already sold out. While he was being interviewed on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," border czar Tom Homan laid into Massachusetts Democrats for having policies that release hardened illegal aliens back into the public.Homan listed off the illegal aliens whom federal agents had recently apprehended in Massachusetts, including foreign nationals with charges for assault and battery, indecent assault on a minor, aggravated assault on a pregnant woman, and drug trafficking."So [Boston Mayor Michelle] Wu and Governor [Maura] Healey ought to be calling ICE and thanking them for making their streets safer, protecting their communities, and taking these people off the street," Homan said. "They have turned a blind eye to this. They're sanctuary cities. Sanctuary cities and sanctuary states are sanctuaries for criminals."Homan once again implored Healey and Wu to allow their police departments to work with Immigration and Customs Enforcement and to allow agents to apprehend illegal aliens who are in local custody.'This ICE operation will target the criminal illegal aliens who flocked to Chicago and Illinois because they knew Governor Pritzker and his sanctuary policies would protect them.'"This is what we're trying to do.
