Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) defended former President Donald Trump’s position on Ukraine during an interview over the weekend, noting that the country is only invaded when Democrats are in the White House. Cotton made the remarks during a Sunday interview with Jake Tapper on CNN’s “State of the Union” when asked about comments that Trump made at a rally where he noted that Ukraine seemingly never stops asking the U.S. for assistance in their war against Russia. “I think it’s important to look at the context of what’s happened in Ukraine over the last 10 years,” Cotton said. “I have noticed that Vladimir Putin only invades Ukraine when Democrats are president. It happened under Barack Obama. It happened under Joe Biden. It didn’t happen with Donald Trump.” “In fact, the weapons that Ukraine used in the early days of this war to fend off the Russian invasion are the weapons that Donald Trump sent, that Barack Obama and Joe Biden had refused to send,” he continued. “One reason why Joe Biden — or why Vladimir Putin thought he could get away with going for the jugular in Ukraine is because of the disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan, which projected weakness and indecision. It was just a few weeks later that he began to mass troops on Ukraine’s border.” Cotton said that Trump supports Ukraine and wants them to win but he believes that Europe should “do more and, in fact, should care more, because it is in their backyard. It is on their borders. I think that too. Europe should be doing more of this.” “I understand that European leaders and Democrats here in America didn’t care for some of the language or rhetoric he used,” he later added. “I would say that was necessary to get tough on foreign leaders who are our putative allies who had been free-riding off of American military strength for 35 years. And what you saw is European leaders actually finally investing in their common defense. House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Turner (R-OH) said over the weekend that the U.S. faces an extremely high terrorist threat because of President Joe Biden’s open border policies. Turner made the remarks during a Sunday interview on CBS News’ “Face the Nation” while talking about eight ISIS terrorist suspects who were arrested this month by personnel from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in New York City, Los Angeles, and Philadelphia after they illegally entered the U.S. through the southern border. Turner, who has access to classified information, said that he could not confirm or deny any details about the individuals who were arrested. “What’s important about these reports, and what we’re seeing, especially in conjunction with [FBI] Director [Christoper] Wray’s public statements that we are at the highest level of a possible terrorist threat, that the administration’s policies have, absolutely, they’re directly related to threats to Americans,” he said. “These are no longer speculative, no longer hypothetical. And we have actual administration officials stepping forward and certainly our committee and our committee members have concurred on the intelligence that we’re seeing that as a result of the administration’s policies allowing people to cross the border unvetted.” “We have terrorists that are actively working inside the United States that are a threat to Americans,” he added. He said that the administration releases individuals in the U.S. who have not been vetted and so there is no way to know what risk they present to the U.S. when they enter the country. “This administration, by their own policy, are then allowing those individuals in instead of fully vetting them, fully understanding what the risk is the United States and for the fact that they’re letting them in, and there they are- they’re entering the United States through the southern border illegally,” he said. “And that’s what the threat is. That’s what Director Wray is identifying, and is bringing forward. This administration’s policies are directly resulting in people who were in the United States illegally, who have ties to terrorist groups and organizations, and this is a threat.” WATCH:

Rep. Jim Himes (D-CT), the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, acknowledged on Sunday that undocumented immigrants crossing into the United States pose a “threat” to the country. “Fox News Sunday” anchor Shannon Bream asked Himes how worried he is about “potentially millions of people in this country” whose “full story” is not known after noting concerns raised by FBI Director Christopher Wray and others. “Well, it’s not just that, Shannon, right? I mean, remember, the perpetrators of 9/11 pulled off the most spectacular terrorist attack against the United States from inside the United States, on student visas,” Himes said. “So, yes, the fact that there are lots of people who — who are here on an undocumented basis is a threat and the FBI director is right about that, and the FBI director and the chiefs of all of the intelligence community are very, very focused,” he added. Himes went on to talk about how the fight between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip as well as tensions with China and Ukraine’s years-long conflict against Russia are affecting the situation at the border. “Underlying this, of course, is the conflict in Israel and Gaza which has sort of activated radical Islamic terrorists. They more than ever before would like to undertake an attack in a spectacular way,” Himes said. “The other thing going on, of course, is that over time we have gradually shifted our attention to China and, of course, to Russia,” Himes said. “And, you know, to some extent, it’s a little bit of a zero-sum game. If you’re really focused on China, which I think is appropriate, if you’re really focused on supporting the Ukrainians, which is appropriate, inevitably, there is a little bit less — fewer resources devoted to count — the counterterrorism mission.” Bream then pressed Himes about eight men from Tajikistan with potential ties to ISIS reportedly getting arrested by federal authorities after they crossed the border and their criminal background checks were clean. “The issue was not that they came across the border, although that is an issue, and the issue is not fundamentally with the vetting process per se. The issue was that when their identities were determined, we did not have derogatory information on them. Now, that’s sort of an inevitable aspect of you never have perfect information,” Himes said. The congressman added later that Americans “should take some comfort in the fact that the moment these guys started communicating and doing suspect things, we were all over them.”
