The Violent History and Fiery Birth of the ‘Dragon’s Egg Nebula’ Solves Stellar Mystery

Astronomers studying the origins of a strange and mysterious nebula deduced a turbulent history that shows how massive stars can become magnetized that otherwise wouldn’t be. As well as showing this‚ they were able to capture a beautiful image of what is called the ‘Dragon’s Egg’ nebula in the constellation Norma. Keeping Kids Safe When They’re Home Alone

Author of How to Prep When You’re Broke and Bloom Where You’re Planted online course It was a terrible spring storm. Lightning‚ thunder‚ high winds‚ and suddenly‚ the power went out‚ casting my office in darkness. I went to pick up the phone to call my then 10-year-old daughter‚ who was home by herself for an hour after school. No dial tone. Nothing. Dead as a doornail. The phone system at the office was so elaborate that it didn’t work without electricity. This was back in the days before cell phones‚ so I had no way to reach my little girl. It was the year that her big sister had an afterschool activity and my youngest had balked against having a babysitter‚ saying she was “too old” for that. I reluctantly agreed‚ with some strict ground rules. She had to call me the moment she got home to let me know she’d arrived safely. She was not to go outside‚ use the stove‚ or answer the door. She was to do her homework until I got home an hour later. There was a “safe” neighbor next door if she needed help‚ a kindly older couple who treated her like their own grandchild. I had felt like she was as prepared as I could make her for that hour when she was home alone. But‚ what I didn’t know that day was that the wind had thrown a large branch through our kitchen window‚ shattering glass all over the place and letting in the howling gale and torrential downpour. And she was scared to death. She tried to call me but‚ of course‚ couldn’t get through because our phones were down. She went next door‚ and the neighbors were not at home. So‚ in her ten-year-old mind‚ she did what she thought was the next best thing. I shudder to this day even to type this‚ but she decided to walk to my office‚ which wasn’t far on a good day‚ but on a day like this‚ it was rife with danger. She was soaked before she even got a block and stepped into the corner store‚ where we sometimes picked up milk and bread. (And‚ let’s be real‚ candy.) The store owner recognized her and said‚ there’s no way you can be out walking in this‚ trying to convince her not to leave. Then‚ the school bus driver happened to stop in for something and recognized her. The store owner assured my daughter she’d continue calling me to try and get through. The bus driver gave the corner store owner her phone number and first and last name‚ then gave my kiddo a ride to the office and walked in with her‚ a little nervous because she was concerned I’d be upset that my daughter had taken a ride from a person who was a stranger to me. Imagine my shock when my drenched little girl suddenly appeared and threw herself at me‚ sobbing. We were SO lucky it all worked out. I think back about all the things that could have gone wrong‚ and still‚ I shudder to think of it. We needed some ground rules. I thought I had covered all the bases by giving my daughter safety instructions‚ but that branch through the kitchen window was a total wild card. It set off a dangerous chain of decisions that put her at far more risk than if she had stayed home and simply gone into another room. That was when I first created a little book of home alone safety rules. I tried to think of every possible thing that might go wrong and write down instructions for what to do if it occurred. Of course‚ there’s no way to predict everything‚ but having some guidelines written down for your children can help them through most types of emergencies. What do kids need to be prepared for&;#63; Here are some of the ones that are important: Basic rules of being home alone What to do if there’s a fire What to do if someone gets hurt Information for babysitters What to do if the electricity goes out What to do if someone is at the door Who you can safely turn to for help I like to make these instructions extremely concise‚ something that a child can read over fast if they need some guidance. I created a printable bundle of the rules that my kids had which you can get here. I want it to be affordable‚ so you can name your price for it this week. Prepare your children to be safe when they’re home alone. It’s so important that you prep your kids‚ and also your teenage babysitters. They should be prepared for emergencies‚ too. Having the information written down in one place helps them if they feel panicked. Who hasn’t forgotten some tidbit of information like a phone number or address when they’re scared&;#63; It’s a very common response to fear. So grab my printables or make your own. And if you don’t have young children at home‚ these make a great gift for the working parents in your life. Work with your kids to emergency-proof them. No‚ you can’t prepare them for everything‚ like a branch flying into your kitchen. But with some guidelines‚ you may be able to help them manage emergencies more safely. Have your children ever had an emergency when they were home unsupervised&;#63; How did they handle it&;#63; Are there any incidents like mine that you look back on and shudder because the situation could’ve gone so badly&;#63; Let’s talk about it in the comments section. Centralia: The Abandoned Mine That Has Blazed For Over Half A Century

Before 1962‚ Centralia‚ Pennsylvania‚ was a thriving old mining town. However‚ that changed when a fire broke out in May that year. Although it is not completely clear what started it‚ the results are well known: the fire spread into the labyrinthine mining tunnels running under the town‚ causing devastation as it went. Fissures appeared in the ground‚ sending plumes of gases and smoke into the town‚ and most of the residents were forced away. This may sound like a scene from a disaster movie or even a horror story‚ but it really happened – and the fire is still burning today‚ 62 years later. Before the fireBefore the fire started‚ Centralia had relied on its mining industry for over a century. The key to its relative success was the abundance of anthracite coal deposits that existed below its surface. Once the mines began to open‚ the borough of Centralia was incorporated in 1866. Originally‚ the town was called Centreville‚ but was renamed in 1865 after the US Post Office pointed out that a Centreville already existed in Schuylkill County. The town had a colourful if not productive early history. It became a home of members of the Molly Maguires‚ an Irish secret society that conducted various activities‚ such as organizing miners in unions‚ across parts of the Eastern United States. In the 1860s‚ members of the society are said to have committed several acts of violence in the town – including allegedly murdering Alexander Rae‚ the town’s founder‚ in 186. This is the popular account‚ but its truth is a matter of debate – it is possible the Molly Maguires were set up.By the 1890s‚ the town was home to more than 2‚700 people who depended on the mine in one way or another. Even after the Great Depression struck and forced multiple mines to close‚ it did not stop the town. The fire itselfThroughout its life‚ fires were not unusual in Centralia. Some fires broke out in the mines during the 19th and 20th centuries‚ each causing its own levels of damage. However‚ none of them compete with what happened in 1962.As mentioned above‚ it is still not clear exactly when or how the fire started. One of the more popular beliefs is that it started at the Centralia landfill‚ which was one of the abandoned mine pits that was repurposed into a dump site. At the time‚ the city council had apparently wanted to address the problem of trash that was attracting rats and causing unwanted smells in the town. In May 1962‚ the council wanted to clean up the landfill ahead of Centralia’s Memorial Day festival. Their solution: burn it all.Plumes of smoke leak from a large fissure in the tarmac of an abandoned road in Centralia.Image credit: LaesaMajestas via Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA 4.0)It is possible the fire reached deep into the mine and ignited a vein of coal that then spread into a much larger fire. Unfortunately‚ the mining tunnels spread out and weaved under the whole town‚ and eventually closed down the whole mining industry as the carbon monoxide fumes were too dangerous. The fire has spread so far into the network of tunnels that it was deemed too impractical to attempt to combat. As such‚ Congress bought out Centralia’s residents‚ who were paid to leave. Soon after‚ all the buildings in the town were condemned and the ZIP code was removed. Only seven residents remained‚ but they have been forbidden from passing their properties onto anyone else or to sell them. The fire under Centralia is still raging today and may well continue to do so another 250 years‚ until it consumes all its fuel.To be sure‚ the fire under Centralia is not the only one of its kind. Across the world‚ there are thousands of coal fires burning‚ and all of them are nearly impossible to extinguish. The threat is also a growing one. Open coal beds are exposed to oxygen‚ making it easier for humans or natural chemical processes to spark a flame. It's been reported that the US‚ China‚ and India have the highest number of ongoing coal fires. Unfortunately‚ there will likely be more of these as time goes by.[H/T History.com]

Spooky “Ghostly” Ant Named After Voldemort Is New-To-Science Species

A strange‚ ghost-like ant discovered deep underground has been declared a new species‚ with a shiny new Harry Potter-themed name to boot. Leptanilla voldemort‚ as the novel species has been called‚ is pale‚ slender‚ and prefers life on the dark side‚ much like its namesake.Just two specimens of the mysterious ant were discovered in the dark depths of the underground in Pilbara‚ north-western Australia. They have an extremely slender body as well as long‚ spindly antennae and legs‚ and long‚ sharp mandibles. This unusual morphology has raised lots of questions about the new species‚ but one thing seems certain: “Leptanilla voldemort is almost surely a predator‚ a fearsome hunter in the dark‚” Dr Mark Wong‚ lead author of a study describing the species‚ said in a statement.A full-face view of L. voldemort‚ showing its sharp mandibles.Image credit: Mark K. L. Wong‚ Jane M. McRae“This is backed up by what we know from the few observations of specialized hunting behaviors in other Leptanilla ant species‚ where the tiny workers use their sharp jaws and powerful stings to immobilize soil-dwelling centipedes much larger than them‚ before carrying their larvae over to feed on the carcass.”What exactly L. voldemort preys upon is not known – but centipedes‚ beetles‚ and flies were among a number of subterranean invertebrates collected in the same area. The two individuals of L. voldemort collected in Pilbara.Image credit: Mark K. L. Wong‚ Jane M. McRaeLeptanilla is an elusive genus of ant – only around 60 known species belong to it – that forms small colonies and nests and forages exclusively underground. Ants within the genus are pale‚ blind‚ and teeny tiny – measuring just 1-2 millimeters (0.04-0.08 inches) – and as such are rarely collected and poorly understood. In fact‚ L. voldemort is only the second leptanilline species ever documented in Australia‚ the first being Leptanilla swani‚ which was described in 1932 and has barely been spotted since.Almost a century later‚ this newly discovered “ghostly” ant is joining that exclusive club. During an ecological survey to document animals living belowground in Pilbara – one of the oldest land surfaces on Earth – scientists lowered a net down a 25-meter (82-foot) hole‚ scraping the sides in the hopes of recovering some strange subterranean specimens. And they weren’t disappointed.A top-down view of L. voldemort.Image credit: Mark K. L. Wong‚ Jane M. McRaeBecause of its svelte build‚ L. voldemort is unlike any other Leptanilla species‚ apart from one found in Iran. It’s also practically see-through‚ hence its comparison to He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. The moniker “pays tribute to the antagonist in the Harry Potter book series‚ Lord Voldemort‚ a terrifying wizard who‚ like the new ant‚ is slender‚ pale‚ and thrives in darkness‚” the team behind the discovery write in their study.L. voldemort isn’t the first curious creature to pay homage to the wizarding world. Weird and wonderful beasties have been named after all sorts of people‚ places‚ and things in the canon – from beloved characters and “redeemed” villains to dementors and even the sorting hat.The new study is published in the journal ZooKeys.
