California Democrat Gov. Gavin Newsom was condemned by a California Republican Congressman for his seemingly duplicitous efforts to forestall the passage of a drug policy proposition supported by mayors across the state, including San Francisco and San Jose in the north to San Diego and Santa Monica in the south. Proposition 36, titled the “Homelessness, Drug Addiction, and Theft Reduction Act,” is backed by district attorneys across California and intends to amend Proposition 47, passed in 2014,  by increasing penalties for some drug and theft crimes. “Among other provisions, Proposition 36 would allow prosecutors to charge certain cases of drug possession as ‘treatment-mandated felonies,’ rather than misdemeanors, according to a Legislative Analyst’s Office report,” the Sacramento Bee reported, adding, “The 2014 voter-approved initiative made some lower-level offenses misdemeanors and set a $950 felony threshold for shoplifting.” “I’m very concerned about this drug policy reform that takes possession and makes it a felony,” Newsom said Thursday. “And increases the size of our prison population by tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, over the next decade at a profound cost to the taxpayers. And I don’t think an improvement of public safety.” “We’re working with the Legislature on an independent parallel track — doesn’t require going on the ballot — to support an effort there that’s targeted and specific,” he continued. “Not the scattered shots that folks on the now-Prop. 36 are trying to advance, which would send us back to the 1980s, as it relates to drug policy in this state.” Rep. Kevin Kiley (R-CA) blistered Newson on the floor of the House of Representatives, declaring: This is the initiative to end the era of Proposition 47 in California, which has been responsible for a huge increase in theft, in other crimes, in homelessness, in drug use, in drug overdoses, and a whole host of other problems. The initiative has qualified for the ballot and will be voted on by Californians this November and I believe will pass overwhelmingly this November in spite of one of the most corrupt schemes in the history of our state that was cooked up by the governor of California. Actually a number of repeated schemes; all very novel and unprecedented in character; all directed to undermine the Democratic process in California; all meant to continue to make our communities unsafe, and all of which, despite the governor having an overwhelming supermajority legislature, failed. “I think that it’s simply important to note, for all Americans to see, when you have something like this that happens within our system; where you have an elected official, in this case, the governor, who directly seeks to undermine the democratic process,” Kiley charged. Kiley recalled the efforts to stop the proposition from getting the requisite signatures to qualify for the ballot, then the effort to remove the proposition from the ballot by pressuring the organizers of the initiative to withdraw it, then the effort to “[insert] poison pills into a smattering of existing public safety bills in the legislature,” which stated “something truly incredible, which is to say they would be automatically reversed if voters passed the End Prop 47 initiative in November. The point of this was to give the Attorney General the pretext for lying to voters about what the initiative would do. They’d say, ‘Because now there was this poison pill that would reverse all of the public safety bills if voters passed the initiative, that the initiative is now actually an anti-public safety bill.’” Kiley noted that the legislature rebuffed that action, but then, “In the 11th hour, when it was past the deadline even to put an initiative on the ballot, the governor offered up a Hail Mary where he said, ‘Okay, I can’t get the End Prop 47 initiative off the ballot so what I’m going to do is put on my own competing initiative which is watered down, which is a very weak initiative, but that will be enough to confuse voters.’ And what’s more, he put in there that if his initiative passed with higher numbers than the other initiative, then the other initiative would be wiped out in its entirety, even though there are a lot of things in it that didn’t conflict. It was literally a mechanism that the governor proposed, drafted, introduced in the legislature to overturn the results of a democratic election in California where the End 47 initiative could have passed with 60% of the vote and nevertheless it would have been null and void according to the trick the governor tried to implement. He even moved back the deadline for propositions to qualify; he even moved back the deadline for the Secretary of State to number the proposition so that his own fake proposition — the ‘imposter initiative’, we called it — would get a higher number and then have a better chance of getting more votes.” “I condemn in the strongest possible terms the concerted efforts by the governor of California to thwart and undermine our democratic process in an attempt to keep our communities unsafe,” he concluded.

Former President Donald Trump said during a radio hit on Friday that he would be willing to take a cognitive test alongside President Joe Biden to let voters see the mental state of each presidential candidate. Trump, 78, made the suggestion during an appearance on “The Clay Travis & Buck Sexton Show” as Biden, 81, faces pressure from within his own party to step aside and allow for another candidate to run as the Democratic Party’s nominee. “I am cognitively great, perfect,” Trump said. “And I’ve had tests … I just did a physical, by the way, and it came out perfectly. We’ll announce those numbers soon.” “I suggest that we go in together and do a cognitive test,” Trump added, referring to Biden. “We’ll do it together, like a team.” The presumptive GOP nominee was also asked if he would do the cognitive test with Biden “on television.” “I would do whatever they want,” Trump replied. “I’d do the test, I’d do a mental acuity test with him. At one point in the debate, Trump responded to one of Biden’s answers, saying, “I really don’t know what he said at the end of that sentence, and I don’t think he knows what he said either.” Trump said earlier this month that Biden’s “mind and memory [are] completely shot,” adding that following the debate, “there is a BIG GAP for Crooked Joe to make up.” The debate set off a panic among many on the Left and in the Democratic Party who questioned if Biden could go on as the party’s nominee. An interview a week later between the president and ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos did little to calm Democrats’ fears about Biden’s cognitive ability to run a campaign against Trump and potentially serve until 2029. In January, Biden met with White House physician Dr. Kevin O’Connor and neurologist Dr. Kevin Cannard, an examination brought back into the spotlight earlier this week when White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre corrected a previous false statement about Biden’s check-up. The president also told Democratic governors in a private call that he was checked by a doctor following his debate against Trump, contradicting a previous statement made by Jean-Pierre.

A majority of Americans want to curtail immigration into the United States for the first time since 2005, according to a new poll from Gallup. The survey found that 55% of American adults want fewer immigrants to come to the country, while 41% said that they want immigration to remain at its present levels or would like to allow even more migrants to relocate here. This is the largest percentage of Americans who want immigration cut since 2001, when 58% favored fewer noncitizens. While 25% of those polled said they want immigration to remain at its current level, 16% said they would like more immigrants to come to the U.S. The figure marks a drastic drop from May 2020, when 34% of respondents said that immigration should be increased. Gallup also found that all three political affiliations – Republicans, Democrats, and independents – are more likely to support less immigration than last year. While 73% of Republicans said they wanted immigration to decrease in 2023, the figure now stands at an overwhelming 88%. The share of independents who want immigration to be cut rose significantly from 2023 to 2024, starting at 39% last year before spiking to 50% in 2024. Just 18% of Democrats said that immigration should be reduced in 2023. Now, in 2024, 28% of Democrats want to reduce immigration. Americans have become significantly more supportive of border security measures in the last several years. While only 40% of Americans favored expanding the construction of walls along the U.S.-Mexico border in 2019, that figure jumped to 53% in 2023. In 2019, just 37% of Americans were in favor of deporting all illegal immigrants back to their homelands. The figure sat at 47% as of 2023, according to Gallup. The American public’s shifting views on immigration come amid a presidency where more than 10 million people have unlawfully crossed the border during the Biden administration, with an estimated 1.7 million illegal immigrant gotaways recorded since President Joe Biden was inaugurated in 2021. There were 415,000 total reported gotaways for 2018, 2019, and 2020 under the Trump administration. Immigration has become a major issue heading into the 2024 presidential race. One poll found that only 36% of voters approve of Biden’s performance on immigration, while another found that a majority of Americans support increasing deportations, building a wall on the southern border, and penalizing businesses that hire illegal immigrants.  

Biden’s disastrous press conference last night confirmed what’s been increasingly obvious since 2020—the president of the United States is truly, profoundly unwell and needs to be replaced in the name of political strategy and the ethics of how we treat our elders (if the latter even still exists). But perhaps the worst of these proposed Biden replacements is the one who, on paper, a political strategist might assume I’d be the most likely to vote for: vice president and professional unpopular person Kamala Harris. CNN commentator Dean Obeidallah recently dropped a hot take on Vice President Harris’ chances of being subbed in for the ailing Biden, loudly asserting that veteran journalist (and my fellow ESG skeptic) Charlie Gasparino’s criticisms of Harris as a beneficiary of America’s DEI phenomenon are “what bigotry looks like.” Obeidallah further claimed that the “suggestion that Harris only got to where she is because of diversity programs… is despicable.” His critique is disingenuous in the extreme. Never mind that Biden picked her after saying he was going to pick a woman and specifically discussing the race of his veep candidates weeks before the 2020 DNC. Never mind that James Clyburn explicitly urged Biden to pick a black woman as his VP candidate because “African American women need to be rewarded for the[ir] loyalty.” Never mind that Biden’s chief of staff expressly named racism and sexism as driving factors of Harris’ criticism while in office. It’s likely true that some of Harris’ critics might be bigoted in their reasoning — but the vast majority? Pretending that a lack of enthusiasm around a heavily progressive, tough-on-crime, former California senator is completely attributable to “black woman equals bad” is a level of insularity from the real world only possible when you spend far too much time thinking about the color of people’s skin. As a voter of color myself, the Democratic notion that my vice president must be shielded in a racially-conscious bubble instead of being permitted to stand or fall on her own merit — or, more actually, being given the shovel to dig herself out of the tremendous hole in which she sits—is far more dehumanizing and demeaning than Republican accusations of being a DEI hire. This latest deflection around Harris’ ability to serve well is the same sad dichotomy that DEI advocates employ on the regular: DEI programs are apparently good and necessary to rectify allegedly structural inequities, but it’s also apparently bigoted to suggest that anyone of color has ever benefited from them. The situation is, however, worse than misplaced racial sensitivity: Democrats’ behavior surrounding Harris reeks of candidate protecting, in an election where the party really cannot afford to do so. This sort of electoral mollycoddling is the exact behavior the party needs to avoid if it wants to convince on-the-fence voters like myself that their November ticket actually has a serious operation behind it. I’ve written previously that I’m “not convinced that the Democratic Party cares about anything besides stoking racial divisions to grab my vote.” Nominating Harris, a polarizing figure incapable of pulling approval from her own party, let alone the general American voter base, seems to indicate that the party might care more about race politics than actually achieving an electoral victory capable of creating results. If that’s true, that’s a key sign of a party that deserves every defeat it gets. Shortly after winning the vice presidency, Harris tweeted that “I hope every little girl watching tonight sees that this is a country of possibilities.” Should I ever have daughters of my own one day, I hope they see that their lives contain far brighter possibilities than being the electoral death knell for a floundering party. These products were distributed in stories across Pennsylvania. Although the reason for the recall won’t affect everyone, it’s highly important that those with peanut allergies pay attention. According to the recall announcement, this recall was made because these ice cream sandwiches have “cross-contamination with peanuts.” Thankfully, the company’s response to this mistake is said to have been swift.
