The Enduring Mystery of the Lost City of Zerzura and the 20th Century Race to Find its Treasures

The vast expanse of the African desert has long been a source of intrigue and adventure. Ancient historians told legends of curious tribes amidst the merciless landscape and formidable armies swallowed by the sands. As riveting as these legends may be, none are so captivating as the enigmatic lost city of Zerzura. Known as the “Oasis of Little Birds,” its inhabitants were enchanting, and its treasure, abounding. For centuries, stories had been told of precarious travelers stumbling upon it, but searching the inhospitable desert for its existence would only prove futile. During the early 20th century, as technological advancements brought a renewed interest in the unknown, Zerzura seemed to be the topic on every explorer, archaeologist, and scholar’s tongue. One by one, they took to the sands, in hopes to finally solve this mystery.   Read moreSection: NewsMyths & LegendsAfricaPremiumPreviewRead Later

Syn-eruptive Seismic Destruction Increased Pompeii Death Toll

The eruption of the powerful volcano Vesuvius, which destroyed the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, remains one of history’s most well-known and well-remembered natural disasters. But during a recent excavation at the Insula del Casti Amanti building complex in central Pompeii, new evidence emerged that showed just how intense and destructive these earthquakes really were. Carrie Underwood Earned Approval From Linda Ronstadt Singing “Blue Bayou”

The stars collided in this meetup that’s the stuff of musical dreams. December 8, 2019, marked the 42nd annual Kennedy Center Honors. Linda Ronstadt was one of the illustrious honorees, and she was the subject of a marvelous musical tribute performed by none other than Carrie Underwood, who herself earned approval from the musical legend while singing her signature song, “Blue Bayou.” In her illustrious career, which stretches back almost six decades, Ronstadt has received countless accolades and honors. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013. The following summer, she was gifted the National Medal of Arts. She also jointly received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Here is what happened on that magical night of the 42nd annual Kennedy Center Honors. Carrie Underwood earned high esteem from Linda Ronstadt herself in her tribute singing “Blue Bayou” Together at last—your 2019 Kennedy Center Honorees! Tune in Dec. 15 at 8 p.m. ET as we celebrate these incredible luminaries during the #KCHonors broadcast on @CBS & streaming with a free trial of @CBSAllAccess. Underwood paid a remarkable tribute to Ronstadt by singing “Blue Bayou” and “When Will I Be Loved.” For the occasion, the American Idol champion wore a blue dress bedazzled with sparkles. Underwood’s exceptional performance was dedicated a woman she said “broke the rules and sang music that was true to her.” This is actually something of a repeat encounter for Ronstadt and Underwood, the latter of whom sang “Blue Bayou” for her when she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014. A night to remember Carrie Underwood serenaded Linda Ronstadt with Blue Bayou / YouTube screenshot “Blue Bayou” was originally performed by Roy Orbison in 1963. Her cover became the signature song for Ronstadt by 1977. She sent it to #3 on the Billboard Hot 100, where it stayed for roughly a whole month. Underwood took up the task of covering the song with great success, as Ronstadt could be seen smiling the entire time Underwood was singing. Ronstadt grew emotional watching the powerful performance / YouTube screenshot The evening was full of fantastic tributes, both for Ronstadt and the other honorees. For instance, Trisha Yearwood and Aaron Neville teamed up to perform “Don’t Know Much,” another high-ranking hit for Ronstadt. Viewers were also treated to seeing Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg celebrating Sally Field; Hanks starred with Field in Forrest Gump and Spielberg directed her in Lincoln. Ryan Seacrest Takes Fans Behind The Scenes On His ‘Wild’ First Day As ‘Wheel Of Fortune’ Host

On his first day as Wheel of Fortune’s game show host, Ryan Seacrest could not hold back his eagerness as he took to Instagram to share moments behind the scenes. “A glimpse of my first day…and I’m still spinning with excitement!” his caption reads. The 49-year-old was seen holding up a wildcard, spinning the wheel, and meeting some crew members. He looked ready and handsome in jeans, a long-sleeved black cardigan, and white sneakers as he walked around backstage, showing off memorabilia and some vintage footage. Ryan Seacrest gives fans a glimpse into his first day as ‘Wheel of Fortune’ host   View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Ryan Seacrest (@ryanseacrest) With the reality of Pat Sajak’s retirement after four decades of hosting, fans seem to be more accepting of Ryan as they welcomed him warmly to his new role. “Ryan, you’re great at everything. You will be great at this. Good luck I’ll be watching,” one of his followers said. RELATED: Viewers Are Divided On Ryan Seacrest In New ‘Wheel Of Fortune’ Promo Despite protests against Ryan’s appointment as Sajak’s replacement, some viewers are on his side, noting that there was no better person to replace the former show anchor. “We’ll miss Pat Sajak, but look forward to seeing you- You’ll be great as new host!” a second user quipped. Instagram It’s official Ryan will now work alongside Vanna White to keep America’s beloved game show running, with the latter maintaining her position as the letter-turner. She allegedly had a hard time bonding with Ryan and is said to be considering an early retirement depending on how well they work together in the first few episodes. Instagram Sajak’s daughter, Maggie, is also a part of the program, working as the social media correspondent and an occasional understudy of Vanna’s. With the announcement of Sajak’s exit came speculations about Maggie’s promotion to co-anchor, leading disappointed fans to push back on the news of Ryan’s designation.
