While everyone else went about their day as usual‚ this 18-year-old girl saw a stranger in need and took action. Lilly Baker was driving to meet up with some friends when an elderly woman in a wheelchair caught her eye. The woman was attempting to cross a train track but got stuck — without hesitating‚ Lilly stopped to rescue her. Little did she know‚ however‚ that doing so would lead to a close call for them both. With all of her might‚ Lilly does her best to pull the elderly woman to safety — but she faces difficulties. In fact‚ in their attempt for freedom‚ they end up falling twice. Still‚ Lilly remains determined. She gets an added rush of this determination when she sees a train coming right at them. Train Track Rescue Narrowly Gets a Happy Ending YouTube “It’s a near-death experience‚ and I’ve never really been that close to death‚” Lilly says. “[The railroad company] told me that I was 18 inches away from getting hit by the train‚ and that in itself gave me the chills. I almost started crying.” Ardmore Police Chief Jereme Robison was sent to the scene to help. Despite his experience‚ even he is shocked by the harrowing rescue. He’s taking this moment to highlight the fact that anyone can be a hero‚ no matter who they are. “Bravery comes in all shapes and sizes‚” Jereme says. “You don’t have to be a 6’5 guy that’s muscled up to get out and do something.” YouTube The elderly woman that Lilly saved has major leg injuries but‚ thankfully‚ she’s in the hospital and is expected to be okay. On Valentine’s Day‚ the Wildlife Center of Virginia took in its first batch of orphaned bear cubs of the year‚ and the staff is working round-the-clock to keep them healthy as they search for a foster mother. The center took in the cubs after a construction crew accidentally damaged their den while clearing brush from a site. When workers noticed the mother running from the den‚ they turned off their machines and immediately called the Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR). A biologist went to the scene and found three newborn black bear cubs. They considered leaving the cubs to see if their mother would return. But one of them was injured‚ and construction was continuing in the area. So the biologist brought the cubs to the center. Facebook A veterinary team checked out the orphaned bears‚ which included one female and two males. The cubs were so young that they had yet to open their eyes‚ but two of the three were deemed healthy. They only suffered from mild skin lesions‚ which could be from ringworm. The third cub will need some extra love and attention because of an injured leg. Staff members are tirelessly working to ensure the cubs thrive‚ and they’re bottle-feeding them with formula every six hours day and night. The DWR Hopes to Place the Orphaned Bears With a Foster Mother. Meanwhile‚ the DWR is looking for a foster mother to care for the cubs. Black bears with litters of their own will usually take in orphans and raise them as their own. However‚ not many bears have given birth this year because of a lackluster acorn crop last fall. Facebook The department has been looking into the collared bears it tracks‚ but there are very few options among them. Simply having cubs doesn’t make a mother a foster match. Biologists also need to consider “the location of the female [and] den where we’d try to foster these cubs‚ the age of the female‚ the number of cubs she already has‚ and even the weather‚” according to DWR bear biologist Katie Martin. While it would be best to quickly get the orphaned bear cubs back into the wild‚ they will be healthy and cared for no matter what happens. If no foster mothers come through‚ a rehabilitation team at the wildlife center will raise the cubs until next spring when they’ll be old enough to be released in the wild without a mother. One marine took it upon himself to visit the mother of his fallen comrade-in-arms‚ and his words to the grieving woman were truly beautiful. This officer really wanted her to know how much good her son had done in the line of duty and how much he’d meant to everyone. He also wanted to tell her that she had done an amazing job bringing up such an incredible human being. A video of the heartwarming enounter shows the mom tearing up during his sweet speech. As he continued‚ the officer explained part of the reason for his visit. He didn’t believe that the mother of the fallen marine had received enough recognition during her son’s funeral. It had upset him that no one thought to honor the woman who had brought up the deceased hero.
